Cattle RulHlng In Texas. The employers of the cuttle-raisers of a diHtrict organize hunting parties each spring and fall, in order to brand tho calves. Each stock-owner is required by law to have a regular brand and ear-mark recor ded in the ofllico of the county clerk. In tho semi-annual hunts each calf is branded with the brand of the cow it follows or sucks. A calf not found acccompaning any cow is liable to bo appropriated by the party who can first brand it. Tarties at tempting to brand, or othcrwiso appropri ate cattle, without first making the proper record with tho county clerk, are liable to a fine of $25 for each offense. Without such a public record no stock-raiser could pro tect himself from depredation by legal prosecution. Of lato years parties have driven numbers of sucking calves from their dams. The increasing demand for beef has created a strongor temptation for this illicit pursuit, necessitating greater efforts to repress it. For tho gathering of tho animals for salo tho samo methods are used to some extent, but of lato tho cattle-raisers have been cm ploying permanent agents, but in different parts of the country, paying them 50 cents for every calf branded and $1 for every steer horded for salo. A bill of sale is given to tho purchaser describing the animals by brands, earmarks, &c, which must bo shown tn tho cattlo inspector, who, in re turn, issues a certificate to tho effect that the civttlo co.)ona to tll0 i,m 0f gni0i Ho keeps a pormanont record of bis official transactions, which is always open to in spection. Among tho noticeable changos mado in the cattlo business, sinco tho closo of tho lato civil war, is its concentration in fewer hands. The smaller ownors found their stocks decreasing, and henoe their profits did not meet thoir expenses. They have generally sold out, either to the larger pro prietors or to tho tallow and hide dealers. But few mon now in the business have less than 1,000, branding about 250 calves. The herds range as high as 50,000 ; tho number of calves branded being from 20 to 25 per cent, of that nmab er. On thoso larger ranches are maintained from 2,000 to 3,000 horses, iu ordor to supply tho army of vangueros with remounts. Large numbers of tho cattlo are killed for their hides and tallow. Some of theso dealers soli to pur chasers ou tho spot, while other ship direct to New Orleans or drive to Kansas. Sev eral loading stock-raisers aro montiouod as wintering from 2,000 to 8,000 each on tho line of the Kansas Pacific Railroad. The term stock-cattlo, in Texas, includes cows, calves, yearlings, and two-year-olds. A party selling 1,000 stock-cattle would furnish 250 of each of tho abovo classes, and chargo a uniform price for tho whole. Tho present price is $5 per head iu specie. Girdling Limbs for Fruit. A correspondent of tho Hartford Courant after giving somo directions in rogard to the care of fruit troes, removing grass and weods from the roots, manuring tho soil, washing the bodies with soapsuds, adds : " If you wish to retaiu tho blossoms in tho shape of fruit, girdlo the limbs. It has been tried and found to be a perfect suc cess. In 1808, Mr. P. R. Russol, then of Bolton, Mass., scloctcd five healthy trees of different varieties, and, when in blow, gird lod a large limb on each. Thoso limbs had double the fruit to bo found on eilhor equal parts of the same trees, and the apples woro much larger and smoother. Iu 1800 ho re peated the experiment with tho same suc cess. Tho trial was mado tho same season oil Dr. Gove's farm in Bolton, and with a like effect. Mr. Itussel, removing to Vlno land, N. J., treated his trees in the same way, and was again rewarded with apples large and fair, that clung with tenacious grip to their branchos. The philosophy is simple. Insects sting tho fruit, which be coming sickly, drops to tho ground. In the spring, the sap goes up the woody fibre of tho troo, but returns iu tho baric. Girdlo the bark, whilo tho tree is iu blossom or soon after, and tho sap cannot return till autumn, at which tiuio tho girdled parts will have healed: hence tho limbs, thus full of sap, will have virtuully enough to retain the fruit. Tho channel around the limbs, mado with a penknife, clean through the bark, should bo small, about half tho width of a pipo-Btem." t'The London Lancet, which is au thority on Buch subjects, gives tho follow ing unique cure for bone felons: As soon as the disease ia felt, put over the spot a fly-blister aboiit the size of your thumb nail, and lot it remain for six hours, at the expiration of which timo, directly under the aurfaco of the blister, can be seen the cono or nuclous of the felon which can be instant ly taken out with the point of a noedlo or a lancet.
