In tlio February, number of Home and Health we fuul Die follow-in;; Finijilo mul useful instructions fur curing a cold. "Tlio first hour alter rateliinjj n cold, it may bo cured, by anything which thoroughly, warms and restores circulation. Thorough ly warm such parts of the body as may have been first chilled, or affected by the cold. An old physician said to mc, when T was attending his lecture during my student life, " AVe must drive out a cold by tho mo door through which it enter ed." I have found this to be excellent advice. If tho cold has coiuo from wet or cold feet, batho them thoroughly in hot water with mustard. If tho neck of the spinal column lias been tho door of ingress for tho cold, stand or sit with the back against or near tho hot stovepipe, or toward tho tire, until tho part is thorough ly warmed, and tho circulation in thoso parts arc restored to its healthful condition. Imbibing warm drinks at the samo time will bo of use. A thorough bathing and rubbing of tho skin will also bo of great service. These rules thoroughly followed will generally avail. If any medicine bo required, I know of nothing better than the Cold Powder recommended first by Dr. Heard. The formula or prescription for it I will now write for you, as follows : Camphor, two parts. Powdered Opium, ono part. Carliouato of Ammonia, one part. Dissolve tho camphor in ether to tho thickness of cream, then add tho opium and ammonia. Get the druggist to prepare it. Keep it in a bottle tightly corked. Tuko bofore retiring to bed ; dose, three to $ix grain in a little water. The druggist who puts it up will advise you how to measure grain. Keep on hand at all times, and tke as soon as may bo convenient after becoming thoroughly chilled. The effect of this powder is seen in tho opening of tho pores of tho skin, and In producing sleep. While, however, I rec ommend this powder, I adrise always that the warming process be resorted to, and in most cases this should suffice. Avoid taking mcdicino when you can." Copperas and Salt as a Preventive of Pear Wight. An exchange says : Many years since wo itsed copperas water Applied to the soil, as a remedy for leaf blight in the pear, and tho use of iron filings, scraps, etc., Las lieen occasionally reported as a preventive. In other words, pear trees standing near a blacksmith shop, around which all the refuse filings, etc., of the shop wore thrown, liave been reported healthy, when trees not so supplied, but in equal and better soil, just adjoining bavd blighted and died. The use of hot copiwras water as a wash to prevent the blight lias been advised, but while it has acted beneficially when taken in the very first stages - of the disease, It das not generally been accredited as of specific value. The why? Is believed to be, because the blight is caused from somo un healthy condition of the tree, and like the human system subjective to whatever dis- , oaso may exist in the same. . A Btudy of the organism of the plant, 1U ingredients to form health and vigor, has therfore been aa much a point with tho intelligent horti nulturist, as has the human system to the professor of medicine; and a careful obser vation makes it apparent that copperas or milphate of iren, as well as common salt, aro necessary hoalth ' in the pear tree. With this knowledge in view, therefore, it becomes the pear tree grower to apply to Us soil a solution of copperas and salt, in preference to a free use of animal manure, , in which tire only a small percentage of the great properties of the two ingredients of food requsite in the tree. As to quantity and time of application it is our Impression that to each pear tree of ten years' growth one-fourth pound of copperas and two pounds of salt dissolved iu two gallons of water and sprinkled over the ground within tho area of the branches is about tho quantity that should be used, and that any time previous to March, is the time to make the application. Corn March Paste. Corn starch makes the best pasto for scrap-books. Dissolve a small quantity In cold water, and then cook it thoroughly, Jlo carerul and not get it too thick. When cold it should be thin enough to apply with a brush. It will not mould or stain the paper. It is the kind used by daguerrco- typlsts on "gem pictures. Itemed for Chronic Dlarrlicea. Put a tablo-spoonful of wheat flour in a tumbler of water ; beat until it foams, and drink immediately. If the patient is thirsty more water way be added. It should be taken four times a day ; before meal times and before going to bed. T Bemove Kust From Cloth. . Tike three' parts t water and ooo part muriatio acid, and apply to the spots. ttluse thoroughly. THE ACE. 1872 The Lending Democratic Newspaper in Pennsylvania.
