I see frequent prescriptions for horses, of various iloscs in larger and smaller quantities. Don't some men iujuro their horses by giving thein too much medi cine ' 1 1 know an owner of many horses, who keeps medicines on hand at all times in largo quantities, and frequently doses them, sick or well. Yet his horses are not so well as mine in the long run, and I give no medicines. I bought a fine horse of this man and ho assured me that ho could not live unless I had him regularly doctored. I did not believe any such nonsense, and I did not give him any. lie has food fed him regularly, and grain in moderate quantities ; I keep him in a nice, clean stable, never allow him to be driven hard, and never over worked, and ho lias not been sick for years. The fact is, dosing horses with medicine is only an unsuccessful attempt to reconcile a healthy, sound condition, with hard feeding, hard driving, and abuse generally. Influence of Cold on Milch Cows. Cows that aro in milk, or have been milked lute are peculiarly sensativo to cold; they arc frequently injured by be ing exposed to storms. iy getting wot and becoming chilled, pulmonary com plaints and other disorders arc produced, and thus the farmer has a sick animal on hand, which is a source of trouble, anxi ety, and not unf'requeiitly a total loss. Jinny of the troubles that conic upon cows at the period of calving, may bo traced to exposure during the winter ; and therefore, on this account alone, will it pay the farmer to shelter his Btock on the approach of wind or rain. How to Cook Old Fowls. For the possible benefit to some other young housekeepers, I wish to tell them how to cook an old chicken. Prepare as j lor roasting, then boil three hours in u I covered pot. with one quart of water, to I which add two tablespoon l'uls of vinogar ; after which put it into a pan in a hot oveu for about one hour to brown. The liquor in the pot to bo prepared for gravy. Should the water boil away too much, more should bo added. The result is, the meat is as tender as a young chicken, and some think richer and better. Pasturing Swine. An Ohio hog raiser advocates the sys tem of pasturing hogs on clover during the summer, lie presents, as the advan tage of tli is plan, tho statement that an ncro of grouud in clover will pasture five hogs four mouths, and that it will take the corn from half an acres to feed thciu the sanio time. Tho cultivation of tho corn ho counts equal to tho rest of the other half acre, lie further claims that' hogs pastured on clover are in far better condition than if fed on corn, as they are better-framed, healthier, and eat bettor, and also states that tho laud is enriched by tho pasturing. White (litigerbreud. Sift two pounds of flour into a deep pan, and run into it three-fourths of a pound of butter; then mix in a pound of butter; then mix in a pound of com mon white sugar, and three tablespoou fuls of ginger. Having beaten four eggs very light, mix them with tho other in gredients, and add a small teaspoonful of peurhush melted in a wine glass of sour milk, bur the whole together hard. , lloll into hhcets un inch thick. n-r.'isi ntul 1 bake in a moderate oven. To Stop Meedliifr. It is said that bleeding from wound on man or beast may be stopped by a mixure of -wheat flour aud common salt, in equal parts, bound on with a cloth. If tho bleeding is profuse, use u largo quantity, say from one to three pints. It maybe leit on for hours or even days if necessa ry. Tho person who gave us this recipo says : " In this manner I suved tho life of a horse which was bleeding from a wounded urtery; the bleeding ceased iu five minutes after tho application." To Preserve Hams. After hams havo been smoked, take them down aud thoroughly rub tho flesh i part with molasses, them immediately up- i ply ground and powder pepper, by sprint- j ling on ns much as will stick to tho mo- ! lasses, when tlicy must bo hung up again j to dry. Jlams treated in this manner j will keep perfectly sweet for two ycurs. This must be done before the fly deposits 1 its eggs, for uftcr that is done nothing j Will stop their ravages. XSriT A smull, clou n potuto, with tho end cut off, is u very convenient medium of applying brickdust to knives, keeping it about tho right moisturo, while tho juice of tho potato, assists in removing i stains from tho surtuce. A better polish can be obtained by this method than by any other wo huve tried, and with less labor. BOBBINS' ELECTRIC SOAP, The licst in the World! STRICTLY PURE! NO SAND ! NO UOSIN ! NO CLAY !
