The evidence showed that a quar rel had taken plate between the wives of the men about the non-payment of rent, Ripp be ing a sub-tenant under Barnes. At the time Barnes was away, and upon his return, being told that Bippliad applied an offensive epl, thet to his wife, he spoke to him about it. This led to a fight. None of the witnesses saw a knife in the•hands of Barnes, but they saw him strike Ripp with •something, they could not tell what. Barnes's story is that Ripp came at him Witlia knife, and that he caught hold of it and pulled it from him, and in draw 7 imr ' it through the hand the cut was inflicted. A SAD RICTUEL—About as sad a picture as has been-presented in - Camden for some time, was witnessed yesterday morning. Four healthy, stout and noble looking men, just in the prime of life, and physically capable of doing any kind of honest i vork, were in charge of Sheriff Cavalier, of Atlantic county, on their way to the penitentiary at Trenton, to which institution they had, been sentenced by the Court at May's Landing. One bad been con victed of attempting to kill a young man named Westcott, at the New Excursion House, At lantic City, last summer. Ills name is Cald well, and, at the time, was acting in the posi tion of a detective on the Camden and Atlantic Railroad. The other two were burglars, and the foiu•th was also for an attempt to murder a boy at Jlammonton. Caldwell was sentenced inr three years, and the others for five each. The fate of these men should be a salutary lesson and warning to all others contemplating the commission of crime. Dotson, was arrested in Camden, charged with having stolen several sets of harness from parties in Gloucester county. From Charles F. Clark, near Malaga, he took a good set; another from George Pancoast, and still another from sonic unknown person. He sold one set to Mr. Mc- Cready, in Camden, where it was recoveretl.
