1211=1 A Montana Detective. Colonel A. li.'llicebare, in one of his ad mirable letters from Montana to the Chattv o . bersburg .Repository, gives„ the following sketch of a noted character of the territory:: I had the pleasure recently of taking John,X. Beidler by the, hand, and I need hardly My that the greeting was mutually cordial. I had not seen him for twelve ve o, when he was known to, the, people of ehambersburg, as an . &celled , Maker of brooms, cocktails and juleps, and a fellow of infinite jest. He has grown stouter, but not any toiler; since he has been living, in the mountains, and he still carries the old merry twinkle of, the eye that made face beam with good humor When be was among us in the "Green, Spot." "Time has not entirely spared him, and his youthful face has its furrows and his locks are sprinkled with sliver, but lie is active and jolly as ever, and pursnes the ceaseless, restless tenor of his way from one end of the Territory to the other. A white slouch hat, with an immense brim; ldose . frock coat 'with ponderous pockets; pants and vests' of the same cloth loosely out; -high-topped boots; the inevitable woolen shirt; a brace ; of rfaithful pistols in his belt, and. huge "Arkansas tooth-pick" or bowie-knife, in. a leather• sheath, compese the "outfit" of this mysterious and :almost übiquitous personfige., 110 is always in a hurry, never stops to •talk unless it is "busi ness," or to pay a hasty tribute to valued friendship, and whence he comes or whither heoes but few know. Ire is the great detective or the mountain regions; and works up every 'important tneft, runs doiin every ' murder; pursues:every criminal who flees to escape justice; "spots" the wrong doers often before they mature their villainy and disperses them to distant climes ; takes a turn at the Indians occasionally, usually at the cost of the savage scalps;. runs the militia when in the field, and can tell of every den of iniquity in the Territory, name its occupants, and sum up the record of their previous crimes. When Important trains are to be guarded, he is called to the task, and his presence with a picked command, has always prevented attack. Two years ago he escorted a train with two millions of gold oveithellozeman route, and the same season he guarded a train that carried a ton of gold , from Confederate Glitch to Fort pen ton. We had a long talk 'over old times and'Old friends, and..then he hurried off on his favorite mission. He had spurred his "kyuse" from Helena to Virginia—a distance of 130 miles over the steep mountain ranges—in fifteen hours, and ovas ready to go 130 miles more in less time if necessary. To speak of him here as Col. Beidler, or Mr. Beidler, would make Montana people stare, and most likely provoke the inquiry, "Is he any relation of X? " When "X" is spoken of, every one at once understands who is meant. He has no other name here, unless in official documents as U. S. Collector of the Port of Helena, Dep. U. S. Marshal or Colonel of the militia. When he goes for a desperado he • generally takeshim "Withotit papers," as he terms it, and whep he cpmtnands, no one has yet been reckless enough to question his authority or dispute his power. He has hung some thirty of the most lawless men the continent could produce, and has arrested hundreds, often in distant regions and without assistance, and has never been- repulsed. Many have tried to "get the drop on him," but in vain. Quick as the lightning's flash his pistol is drawn and cocked, mid a movement looking to resist ance is death.. As an expert in the use of the pistol, he has no rival since the notorious Plummer was executed by his hands.. He is evidently in love with his exciting life, and already complains that Montana is "dull" in his line t He despises petty . law-breakers, and he hags a murderer and a first class, wholesale thief with the satisfaction of a scienced sportsman bagging his favorite same. But lie still has enough to do to sat isfy,- any - ordinary ambition, for not a week passes without his name figuring in the re ports of justice. A. Helena paper, of a recent date, has the following notices of him, from which it may be inferred how "dull" his busi ness is: "CAN'T TELL.—Certain facts in our pos session, very suggestive of the Hangman's Tree and hemp, we are not permitted to speak of at present. We saw 'X' pull a man oil; ltis horse the other day, and—that's all :" There was doubtless a short shrift and a hasty funeral without cards. Again : "Mom. Bocr•s.—Joe Logan was arrested a week ago by 'X' for manufacturing bogus gold dust, lle was yesterday turned over to the Territorial authorities." And again : "EscArED.—A candidate for hempen honors escaped last night at t 2 o'clock. 'X' ,is in the saddle." )tt-- "X" returned, but no one has taken the trouble to inquire as to the whereabouts of th,e "candidate for hempen honors." He May be living, but if so he is out of the ju• risdiction of the unseen tribunal whose death-sentence is often carried by "X," and relentlessly executed where none but the Great Judge is witness. It is never clone without trial and*cendemnation, but of that trial and terrible judgment the desperado seldom knows, - until his doom ig pronounced by him who executes its mandates. The foregoing items are from a single number of the Helena Tri-Weekly Heectid, and he appears in like manner in almost every issue when he is not absent on "btisi- Bess." He has acquired a clever competence, raid is more universally esteemed by good citizens than any other resident of. the Terri- Wry. Like nearly every one in the moun tains he talks of "going home" every spritil and fall, but like many others who . settled here with the first tide, he will be more likely to land in Walrussiti than in the States. I presume that he would hardly toss a copper between solitary confinement and transporta tion to Pennsylvania. lie is still unmarried, and his home is anywhere under the shelter of the deep, blue vaulted dente that encircle? 3 the mountains. 11Urelettites by the Wholesale. Mr. b:tward's latest purchase is a very disirable one. When he negotiated fur the charming little island of St. Thomas there ... was something of it. Ilan painful report is now current that it has since be(m altogether blown away by one of the terrible hurricanes so prevalent there. It is a comfort that we have not paid for the "movable" pr)perty. The island is kept in constant terror by these' visitations. When "the hurricane approach,a public fast is held, and God is im plored to avert the danger. After praying, the inhabitants retire to the Gaverament the only sate place on the island, 'a strong work of masonry twenty feet high. And after the hurricane months are over, ' thanks tfiving ia held that the' danger has passed. But the hurricanes are nut the strongest recommendations of this "delighttul summer resort." That we may see just what it is that gr.. Seward would spend money for, let us read the following from a letter to the Springfield l'epublican: As there is now talk of the United States purchasing the - Maud; it may be well fur the people to Mow its sanitary condition. Pro bably no commercial port is more unhealthy. The steward of the steamer Trent said that the half of his twenty-four table'vitiiteta died yearly also of the fever, and yet he bould hire plenty more at sixteen' dollars''a 'month. The probable explanation being that "dead men tell to tales." It is a question, therefore, in "the purchase of '.the island as: a harbor, what abatement. shall be made in the price for hur ricanes a part of the year and pestilence all the time. • • Row NorthOm , 'Men aro Treated in Alabama. Every word of it is true, and the portrayal of the position of the Southern Union man who returns to his home after the war, is ad mirable, and drawn to the life. The sugges tion that .'all is duplicity down hero' prompts me to say that if these people in some respects resemble the Chinese, they in many others remind me of the Sioux Indians. They re spect power---they respect it profoundly and their attitude of humility after the surrender was sincere, because they knew what they deserved,"and what the conquerer had in• his power to inflict. That fear removed, you see them as they are, humble to cringing in presence of superior force or the commissary; tyrannical, plotting . and revengeful where no immediate interest is to be subserved." wroLA Official Dc patch from the President to the 'lash Colonial Office. [horn the London Times, November T.] The following is the copy of a despatch re ceived st the Colonial Office from the President of Tortola, dated 31st October, brought by the Douro: 6111 :11t1'lll'll litirtli:OLD TO THE ouKE DucKlsc. HMI AND CHANDOS Torrroi,A, October 31.—My Lord Duke : It is my most painful duty to acquaint your Grace, that a terrible hurricane, burst over these islands yesterday. The Storm lasted from 11 A. M., to .3 P. M., but the greatest force was from 12 to 2. In that brief space of time two-thirds of the miserable tenements of the town were blown down; the gaol is destroyed: the church, the hos pital, pier, school-house; Wesleyan chapel, and poorhousei.re. also destroyed; and my o wn.d wei- Eng unroofed, and rendered uninhabitable. 2.' The lOss of eantnot,•tusyet, be , correctly ascertained. I have however already been officially informed cif above twelve deaths in the town, two at Peter's Island, two at Westend, while I hear that a' quantitytof people are killed in other parts of the country . , and scarcely a hut or habitation isileft standing. • - 3. All was bright and verdant; the withering blast has p.assed over.),t, and, not a fruit ,or other tree remains. ' The works of the few remaining estates are all totally destroyed. 1. It is Impossible for any pen to convey au accurate acconnt of the appalling misery. There is not 30/. in the public chest, and the chief tax, the housetax of the year, is Just falling due, and, of course, cannot be collected.. If ever any calamity appealed to, piddle syrnPatity, I am confident this will awaken it, and I trut your Grace will be able to point out sonic hope of relief, as we cannot levy any luxes from this Im poverished community. 5. I shall send down to St. Thomas as soon as I can get a boat to go, but all the sloops and canoes belongingto the place are either destroyed or very much damaged, and I do not know how soon I may be able to do so, and I trust from charity and other somas we may bo able to ob tain some flour and.cornmeal. Meanwhile, star vation, or very like it, appears to be impending, for nearly all the small store of flour in the town was damaged by the tremendous sea, ~which swept in and carried away houses and Indi viduals. s. I forgot to add that the doctor's house Is de stroyed. the clergyman's very much damaged, and - I and my family are compelled to take refuge in the public offices, where the paupers and police are also sheltered. I have, &c., ARTHUR RU311101,1) P. S.--The deaths in Roadtown amount to 22, 1-20th of the population. A.
