The name of "Jupiter" has been given to this Symphony probably to judicato thereby its bril liant, majeetic Character. The first movement Allegro vivace, common time, ()pens with a bold, defiant uni sonous passege for ell the instruments in two men wife% Which is followed by two measures taken by the str i ng giarte t:. piano' Another four measures of alight variation tee the di n g preceg follows in the bar =wry of the donfinant,G. edg periodronter ing by,s sternal ryllim of the wind instruments, re lieved by s een rapid figures of the violins and violas intervarilag, is given , a somewhat jovial expression. After s close bn the second of the key D, a new motive or soft, expressive character is introduced by the Tirane in the key of the dominant G, which is happily imitated by the basses, who seemingly anxious to re? rain the beautiful first motive whi repeat ft © n has be in the key ofen so grace fell), introduced by the G. 'A yigorons incidental phrase, after a measure's pa for the whole orchestra, in C minor, soon pass ing. however, to the major, with 'intertwining of the Strut and second motives, leads to the end of the first part in the key Of the dominant. The change from the dominant G to E flat is as simple as striking, pass ing through three notes only (g, f, b flat) in unison, and leads to new motives and frequent changes in harmony. Much wonder mid admiration have been expressed in later times at the bold unisonotts modulations occurring in Meyerbeer's works and they have been regarded as something - new, but bore, and in other places in this Symphony, we have them in the greatest simplicity and in most imposing grandeur. An eminent Germaneritic, whom we can not quote at any length, says: "ut this miter beauty is no strengthe ; a genuine noble thought, a solid and manly dignity, a brilliant marching on, me, by their daring and freedom, the characteristM attributes of the eagle." The Andante cantabile in three-four time, F major, maintains such a peculiar grace thronghont, that the violins and violas should be muted. It is rich in situa tions of effect, particularly in the suddenly changing shading of piano and forte, which seem inapassionately to tatertupt the even, quiet flow of the melody, but in reality only the more to elevate it. The three princi pal motions are interwoven in a masterly manner; the modulations and harmonies are exceedingly interest ' lug and pleasing to cultivated ears, in fact, rich, exu berant and modern for all time. The Minuetto Allegretto is the picture of a life-en joying man, undisturbed by care or anxiety, cheerful, serene nndjoyous, yet not entirely frbe from longings, which seem.to crop out in the Trio, which also is en 'tithed by its beautiful harmonic _concatenations. The Finale Allegro Motto, in common time, contains the Fugue, which also is one of the distinguishing traits of' this wonderful composition. Mozart stands in this no ble work of art inimitable and unapproachable, for no other composer has ventured to introduce the Fugue form with such an elegant, free handling as pervades it throughout. It has been remarked of Beethoven, Spohr, Schumann, Gade, and others, that when they attempted to treat the Fugue in this free manner, they soon fell off from its support, as if they felt their strengthinauffiiient to carry them through an eleva lion cif thought and style from beginning to cud of their work. But Mozart has left us another exemplar of this masterly command of never-failing resources of melody and harmony in the wonderful Overture, The Nagic Flute, a work which must sound as well a cen tury hence as to-day. Toe first fonr measures of the Allegro will bring to recollection the fact that this motive has already been 'used by Mozart in other works, in his Masses and in his Sonata, only here it has arrived at its highest ac ceptallien. — A precise analysis,. however, of this lfugato movement .cannot be given here, for space fails us,and we would be seduced into paths wandering through tangled forests of combinations and beautiful melodic landseapes, o'er which we might lirwer longer than the patience of our readers might permit us. Let thle suf fice far the present, and although a Naga, from some hidden cause, may rant and abuse this grand work of Ziozart, as "without style and full of platitudes and confuaton," let us remember that he alone of all critics, of whatever time' or clime, dared to bespatter with gall ,stnd bitterness a work which stands among its class as the mighty Jove among the gods of Mount Olympus. /t is a .11(piter Tonans. Rromries' OPEUA Taorree.—Despite the inclemency of the ; eather lust evening a very large audience as sembled,a:the Academy of Music to hear Balfo's charming -opera of The Bohemian Girl. Everybody was determMed to be pleased, and not only was each memberof the company greeted with hearty applause upon appeasing, but - the extra enthusiastic encored in discriminately every familiar bit of melody and har mony in the operti, no matter _by whom, or in what style it was sung. The performance was generally good, but it is simply just to say that no improvement noon former presentations was observable. Miss Etch ings sang sweetly and well, and she performed the part Of "Arline" - in the graceful and acceptable manner. with which all are familiar. But we fear she attempts too much.' No artist can appear constantly upon sue cessivd night s in arduous roles through a long, season without the exertion' telling upon ger voice. Miss Richingti does this; and while the effect is yet scarcely perceptible,E will be painfully so within a brief pe riod, union; sheseeks relief by- obtaining a competent artist to alternate with her in leading parts. Atter all she haat intrifor English opera, and withthe hold she has upon the affection of the public, she'cannot afford to be compelled" to withdraw from the stage in the coarsen! a few years and in the very midst of her suc cess. 'Mr. Castle's rich, sweet tenor is as good as ever, and ha gale the part' of "Thaddena" with all of his - usual spirit and skill. Mr. Campbell's "Count Arn helm" wasliery good, but was not as acceptable as it has beenmpon former occasions. He appeared to be suffering from a severe cold, which prevented the full exercise able tine vocal powers. In the song "The Beart Bowed Down" it was particularly observable that he labored under a disadvantage. It was given with feeling but with much less effectiveness than usual. Mr. Wylie performed the part of "Florestin" in an acceptable manner, and Mrs. Arnold was mode rately good as the "Queen." Mr. Seguin's "Devils hoof" was as full of vigor and life as ever. This even ing La Sonnonbula will be presented with Miss Etch ings as "Amino." a part in which she has gained well merited celebrity. AVIVSEDLENTIS. Tim THEATILEI4 . —At the Chestnut Mrs. D. P.
