Ceneral Melvean, who has been nominated for . the office of Secretary- of State, wis born a Hoosic, Kensseiaer county. \c>v York, on the fith of August. Isi-’l. Dining his vonth lie worked on his father's farm in Saratoga county, receiving his education chiclly in the district school and academies. His first office was that of School Superintendent for the town where he lived. Next he obtained-a professor ship in Jonesvilie Academy. lie was admitted to the bar in 1849, and in 1 Mao was elected Jfulge for Saratoga County. In 185 S he was fleeted a Keprescntativefrom New York to the XXXVIth Congress,'and was re-elected to the XXXVIIth, serving in each as Cliairmau of the Committee on Extlcmiiftires in the State Department. . The Hon. Calvin T. Hulbui d. tlie'nimllnee for ' Controller, was born at Stockholm, St. Lawrence county, June 0. 180'J. After completing hiß scho lastic education at Middlebury College, Vt., ho studied law at Yale. 110 was a member of the State Legislature in 184‘2, 1841 and 1862, and re presented New York in the XXXVIIIth and XXXIXth Congresses. The other nominees upon the ticket are all worthy the suffrage of the Republicans of our State, and will carry our banner victoriously through the November contest. The New York Times also endorses the nomi nations heartily, and closes with the following W “The platform embraces a manly affirmation of impartial suffrage, a strongly-worded protest against mnl-admimstratlon and corruption in the affairs of the State, and an emphatic declaration in 6upportof Congress and its policy. The watch words inscribed on the partv banner are, ‘Na tional reconstruction through liberty and justice: State repose through integrity and economy.’ While asserting the necessity of fairness and i duality in the public burdens, all inclination to tamper with the financial obligations of the Union is repelled and rebuked. Recognition is given to the services of the Union soldiers, and the official conduct of Mr. Stanton. And thanks are accorded to Governor Fenton and Senators Morgan acil Coukling. A resolution was also adopted favorable tea modification of the Fxcisc •md Similar Laws, so far as these may interfere too horshiv with the liberty of tbe citizen." OBKTIAUY. Moffnl.-irtl B. <;ott>}, Itegister ot Hi.' Trciisurj-., Mr. Colby died at Haverhill. N. 11., a few days ago. He was a native of Derby, Yt., and one oi_ the firmest supporters of the Union who hailed from that gallant State. During all the war lie was an uncompromising Republican, and his appointment as Register of the Treasury hi Washington, in 1861 was an acceptable recognition, In Vermont, of tbe devoted. iovuTty of one of ber ' sons. The man ner in which Mr, Colbv performed the duties of his high office justified both the confi dence and. tlie ‘ hopes of iff? many friends. In 4840 Mr. Colby removed to Montpelier and formed a law copartnership with the Hon. Lucius B. Peck, and acquired a high position at the bur of Washington county. But the genial qualities of hit personal character attracted the confi dence and affections of his parly friends, and ho was their candidute, repeatedly, for Senator and Lieutenant-Governor. The overwhelming auli- Demoeratic sympathies of Vermont were always fatal to the' wishes of Mr. Colby’s political friends. He never Was elected to office, though always loved. The sweetness of his persoual character was proof against the sourness of the decided politics of Vermont. In 1864, after the retirement of Mr. Chittenden. Mr. Colbv was ntf. pointed Register of the Treasury of the Unitea, Suites. In discharging the duties of that elevated and responsible office, he gained universal praise —front the able Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. McCulloch, to the lowest oHicial in the Depart ment.
