The evidence in McDonald’s case is the * a ??e before. The jury, after a long deliberation,- failed to agree 1 and ‘were dis - -charged. .Reardon was put on trial for invasion. The Judge directed- the jury to discharge him on thh ground of a wrong indictment. Michael Crowley , was then tried on the same evidence, but at 9 P. Remarkable Historical Discove ry.—Samuel de Champlain, the noble founder of Canada, was buried at Que bec two hundred and thirty years ago and the place of his interment has Jnained a mystery, though it appears by the records of the time that a tomb was constructed for him in a chapel which was known by his name. This mystery has just been solved by the indefatigable -research of two ecclesiastics of Quebec, the, Abb6s Laver, diere and Casgrain hoth of whom are well Known as accom plished and able investigators of Cana dian history. Almost patient and per sistent sifting of ancient records brought them to_ the conclusion that the chapel -and: tomb must have been in the lower town of Quebec, ata certain point imme diately under the preoipiceon which the upper town is built. Accordingly, they went to the spot in question, ane found that the aqueduct constructed some ten years ago, had apparently destroyed all traces of the supposed tomb, the chapel which contained it having long since disappeared; 6 - Those familiar with Quebec will re member the long stairway which de acon (I s from Mountain street to Cham plain street. Near the foot of these stairs •was the spot which the two archseolo gists had been led to believe was the site of the tomb. It only remained toinquire of those engaged in building the aque -1 duct whether any such remains had been discovered in the progross of the work. They went to Mr. O’Donnell, Assistant Engineer of the Water Works, who had superintended this part of the structure. He replied promptly that an ancient ivaalted tomb had been found at the Elace in question, containing a coffin of uman bones, and that he was so much struck with the character of the dis -covery that he had included a section of the vault with measurements and other indications concerning it, in one of his plans. This plan he found and pro duced. He conducted MM. Laverdiere -and Casgrain-to the place and showed them what was still to be seen of the -old vault, within which; a new one, for the purposes of the aqueduct, had been made, nearly obliterating the inscrip tion on the wall, where, however, some -of the letters of Champlain’s name may still be distinguished. The bones had been removed immedi ately after the vault was discovered, and .Mr. O’Donnell could not tell what had become of them. It appeared,bn further Inquiry, that they had been given to the Abbe Langevin.the priest of aneiglTbor ing parish,, well known in Canada as the author of several antiquarian and .historical publications. He had placed them in a box and kept them for some time, but afterwards caused them to be buried, still in the box, in the Roman Catholic cemetery : for unbaptized in fants. He directed the spot to be marked but this it seems was neglected, for when we last heard from Quebec, the box had not yet been found, though an attempt : to that end had been made. • There can be no doubt that the bones will soon be recovered, and that the remains of the 1 founder of Canada will be honored with a monument worthy of him. Medical Levee.— The Boston Herald ■■ says that the Medical Faculty of Harvard University gave ,their-'customary levee to the students in that branch of instruction, " Thursday.evening, at the Revere House, and a larger number than usual gathered to enjoy the hospitalities. The President and Professors of the College were there, and with them were, the : leading members of the medical profession; resident in Boston. A most pleasant evening was passed by the - students in social'converse, music, and in the' disonsßion of an elegant collation. All retired heartily gratified-with the entertain ment.- The medical class of the present term numbers, one hundred and eighty, a larger number than have ever entered be fore. - - ----- - - . . Texan Products. —The newspapers of Texas say it is becoming difficult to decide whether beef or cotton hold supremacy in Texas. That great State raises large quan tities of both, and having been but-little af fected by the war, continued to grow in prosperity whilst the rest of the Sonthern -States retrograded. Stock-raising and the exportation of cattle make fortunes in a short time for many Texans, and it is said that the transportation of cattle is now one of the most lucrative branches of Southern trade.- Northern vessels, unable: to earn remunerative freights elsewhere, find it a good paying business to carry cattle from Texas to other portions of the South. , „ L A Siamese Conossus.—The Bangkok Be oirder describes a visit to ohe of fiie wats or Pnuddist cloisters of the city, the Wat P’O. which is the largest.; It covers ten acres of iS n< A-E? gray granite, and presents the difficulties of a labyrinth. It contains two temples of imposing architecture. ; i n one is an image twice’ the size of life,’and covered with heavy gold, in the other teak doors beautifully ii-.laid with mother-of pearl. The latter contains ah image which far exceeds the Colossus of Rhodes in size He is reclining on the right hide, with his head resting on the right hand. He is 135 feet long, about 28 feet around the belt, and ths length of the little toe on the right foot’is 3 feet 4 inches. The natives say his bowels are full of large water jars. The labor of constructing and gilding this image must have been immense, and have taken years to accomplish. The nearest approack to this in Christian churches is in St. Peter’s and the Lateran. In the former the figures which support the holy-water basins on entering lo °k like infante, but are the- size of adults the saints towards the roof are in reality three tames the size of life.
