The second performance of Elisdbetta, at the Academy of Mnsic, on Saturday even ing, attracted an immense audience, of cul tivated people, and their enthusiasm was unbounded over the matchless acting of Hue. Biistori. 1 The other actors and ac tresses were also good. Too much cannot be said of this drama, as represented by the Bistori tronpe, and it will gratify the public to know that it is to be repeated at the fare well matinfee, to be given next Saturday, the sale of seats for which will begin to morrow. This evening Mme, Bistori will appear as •‘Deborah” in Mosenthal’s great drama, known here as Leah. This is said to be as great a part for her as “Elizabeth,” the plot, at the same time, being more interest ing. To-morrow evening Mary Stuart will be repeated, and on Wednesday evening the great artist will appear as ‘ ‘ Lady Macbeth,” to see her in which there is great cariosity. On Friday evening her benefit will take place, when she will, it is said, appear in a drama that has not heretofore been pro duced in America. & The First Symphony Concert. There was a large and appreciative audi ence at the Musical Fond Hall, on Saturday evening, at the First Symphony concert of Messrs, Jarvis & Schmitz. The first piece op the bill was the overture, called the “ Car nival Bomain,” by Berlioz, well-written and massive, bat as deficient in melody as istofthe works of the writer and his school. It was extremely well played, the 'orchestra being full and well-trained. The Mozart aria, sung by Mr. Taylor, “Per questa bella mano,” and a good song by Abt, were well received. The Concsrt- Sfitck, by Weber, was admirably played by Mr, Jarvis and the orchestra. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony was given •ptire for the second part of the concert. Baok of space forbids any full account of it: listened to with delight, and the beautiful third movement was especially applauded. Mr. Schmitz had his fine or chestra thoroughly in hand, and he -is to be congratulated on the complete successor this his first attempt to conduct a fall orchestra through a long symphony. The effiond concert will take place JaPuary 26th, Sfii for this the services of Mme. Camilla ©rso, the fine violinist, have been engaged. THE DAILY EVENING BULLETIN.-PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, DECEMBER 17 SHEET. Great Bale of Foreign Pictures., On tbe evenings of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of- this week, Mr, B. Soott, Jr. will sell at bis Art Gallery, No. 1020 Chest nut street, a splendid collection of original paintings, imported from Europe by Mr. d’Huyvetter. They were selected by him in the studios of the artists in Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, Berlin, Dusseldqrf, and other con tinental cities, and the authenticity of each is unquestionable. Mr. d’Huyvelter’s pre vious Importations included soma of the finest paintings ever Drought to Amerioa, and this collection la equal to any of the former ones. Portrait Painting in Philadelphia. —Philadelphia has always maintained a high reputation for the production of fine portraits. The Peales were well known in this branch of the fine arts in old tlmes, and the late venerable Rembrandt Peale linked several generations by painting an original portrait of Washington in the days of the first Presidency, and by furnishing satis factory “counterfeit presentments” of suc cessive generations of Philadelphians, until the period of his death, which took place within a very few years. Gilbert Stuart fol lowed his profession in Philadelphia for a time, and he, too, had the honor of painting an original portrait of Washington. The venerable Sully still plies the brush, and the artist who painted the portrait of Victo ria when she. was the youthful maiden Queen of England, limns the features of the sovereigns of America, now when the dis tinguished lady spoken of has becomes grandmother. We have also a rising and a risen genera tion of artists who hold their own with the beat of their predecessors. Among these, Mr. William K. Hewitt, of No. 65 North Second street, takes a place in the front rank. This gentleman has recently painted the portraits of a number of well kno ira citizens, as well as of ladies and children, and all the pictures turned out from his studio are remarkable for their fidelity as likenesses, for the fine management of their coloring, for their exquisite tone, and for their general artistic merit. In portraiture, Mr. Hewitt stands among the first of living American artists. Sale of Beal BttaM and Stocks. To-morrow,'at the Excnange. See Thomas <& SonV suction column.
