The Kecent Storm In Maryland. Baltimore, October 12th.—Among the 'establishments that have suffered more or less by the storm and flood are the follow ing: Grey’s Factory, Union Factory, Thistle and Granite Factories,.at Ellicott’s Mill- Alberton Factory, at EPraville. The dams -are all destroyed or, greatly,injured. ? The Avalon nail and iron works, hear the Relay House, on the Baltimore ana Ohio Railroad had their dam broken and the buildings -flooded and injured. Baltimore, Oct. 12.—The accounts re ceived from the Upper. Patapsco show the -damage by the storm to have been much E eater than was reported yesterday. The rge dam .of - the..;Union Manufacturing Company, with a part of its mill-race, stabling and horses, together with the bridge connecting the works with the Balti more wid Ohio Railroad, were all swept off. The dam of the granite factory at Ellioott’s Mills, and much other property, has been swept away. There are reports of twenty onepersons believed to have been drowned «t Ellicott’SjMills. Goodman, the book-keeper of the firm of Levi Strauss -A Co.'; is the name of the person referred to in connection with the recent defalcation. The members of the firm say their books and moneys do not show that anything has been abstracted. Sales of Cotton at Liverpool. Liverpool, October 12th.—The “Broker’s Circular’’ reports the sales of cotton for the week at 96,000 bales* The sales to-day have been 18,000 bales. The Maine Bank of Georgia is redeeming its noted at par. Cotton is improving. Sales oi 200 bales; middlings 364 c. Another Railroad Bobbery. Bowling Green, Ky, Oct 12.—A gang of six men robbed the railroad office and store at SouthSUnion, about six' P. M., taking about $1,300, of which $BOO was in specie. They also robbed a large drygoods store. These men had their faces blacked, and their description answer to that of the men who robbed the pay train yesterday. They left in the direction of Franklin. The National Banks.— The law re quires the agents of the National Banks in the leading cities of the United States, to redeem the currency of any of the National Banks under certain regulations. One of -these agents in Boston refused to redeem a package of a thousand dollars, mutilated currency, because he considered the notes so much destroyed as to impair their value. The matter was submitted to the Comp troller of the Currency for his decision, and that officer has decided that mutilated notes must be redeemed by the redemption agen cies of the National Banks at commercial centres, so long as no reasonable doubt exists as to tbe value or identity of the notes presented. When the notes are so badly mutilated as to make the value or identity -difficult to determine, the case shall be re ferred to ; the bank from which the notes were issned. A circular to this effect will he issned to all the agencies and banks to morrow. Postage to Switzerland.— Letters and printed matter of every kind posted in the United States and addressed to Switzerland, may he transmitted to their destination, via Belgium, in the mails made np at New York and despatched by the newline of American steamships running direct between New York and-Antwerp, Correspondence for Switzerland forwarded in the mails to Bel gium by direct steamer to Antwerp, will be subject to the following rates of postage, the samebeing in full to destination: On letters, 18 cents per single rate of half ounce: prepayment optional. On newspapers, gazettes and periodical ■works, 4 cents per each weightof 3 ounces or fraction thereof; prepayment required. On books, pamphlets, and other printed matter, 3 cents per each ounce or fraction of an ounce; prepayment required. Bights on the Danish Coast.— The ■State Department has received the “Notice to Mariners” issued by the Navy Depart ment of Denmark on the 10th of September, .and which is as follows:—That the light •vessels at Lasso Trindelen. of Kobber-' grunden, and at Anholt Knob, which nave hitherto been -withdrawn from <their respective stations, from the 31st of '•December to thelstof March, will hereafter, _as well as the light vessels in Drogden and .Lasso Bende, be kept at their respective stations all the year round as long as the 'i®® 'will permit, and further, that all the said light vessels, when forced by the ice to leave their stations, will be replaced as soon -as circumstancekwlll allow. Smuggling in Texas.— The Treasury Department is informed that smuggling operations of an extensiye character have recently been carried on from Matamoras to Brownsville, Texas, across the Rio Grande. The withdrawal of troops sta rtioned at Brownsville has given thejsmug ; alers an opportunity for effecting their un ilawful purposes, which they have been prompt to seize. Measures have been in ■stituted for the prevention of these transac tions.;Such is thejactivity of smugglers at the -various points of the frontier, that the exer cise of the greatest vigilance is required from revenue officers in the performance of their duties. EFoolish but Tough.— The other day an -Oldman, seventy years Of age, threw himself from the column of the Bastile, Paris, but falling on the tarpaulin stretched at the base -of the column to protect the workmen em ployed in repairs, rolled thence to the ground, without? receiving any apparent injury. He instantly scrambled on his legs, picked up his cap, and was deliber ately walking off, when the guardians po litely requested him to accompany them to a neighboring guard house. Paris a Seaport.— A correspondent ■writes that the idea of making Pans a sea port has again revived. This time there is no question of cutting costly canals-from Pans to the' seacoast, but of bringing mer chant ships up to the Q,uai d’Orsay as it is at present. The inventor of this scheme is a Captain Brazer, and what he proposes to do is to construct ships of a peculiar make, adapted to the sea, at the same time capable of reaching Paris in the depth of water afforded by the Seine at an average height.
