JEFFERSON DAVI& O fling of judge ifindersvood's Court— nether of the 6raud Jury—She Charge of the Judge. RICHMOND, Va., June s.—Judge Under wood arrived from Alexandria this morn ing, and spent the forenoon at Gen. Terry's headquarters, in the mansion formerly oc cupied by Jefferson Davis. Most of the non-resident members of the Grand Jury arrived this morning and made their appearance during the forenoon at the United States Court Room in the Custom House. Soon after 11 o'clock, the hour at which it was expected the adjourned ses sion of the Circuit Court would be opened, Messrs. - Reed, Brady and Brown, counsel for Davis, entered the Court room and en gaged inconversation with prominent mem bers of the Richmond Bar, and others. Messrs. Van Sickle and Thomas H. Edwin, of New York, and Charles Gross, of Phila delphia, junior counsel for Davis, were also present.. Not more than fifteen or twenty specta tors, including two ladies from New York, were in the Court at any time during the day, it having been ascertained by actual count that the legal number of Grand Jurors was not present. Judge Underwood did not appear and oc cupy his seat until one o'clock. At that hour he entered the room, and the Court was formally opened by the crier. By direction of Judge Underwood, the Clerk, W. H. Barry, called the names of the Grand Jury, • and fourteen only responded. James E. Lepseomb and H. L. Wigand, of Richmond, who had been summoned to make up the, requisite number ' were then called to "the Clerk's desk to qualify as jurors. The ' former declined to take the prescribed - oath and was excused. Mr. Wigand took the oath and occupied a seat with the other jurors. Another long pause was caused by Mr. Lepscomb's refusal' to qualify. -Finally Gilbert C. Walker, •of Norfolk appeared and took the oath. The panel being thus complete, the Judge, at two o'clock, delivered the following charge: Gentlemen of the. Grand Jury: lam happy to meet you again and to know that you are still 'living, notwithstanding the assaults that have been made upon you. Little need be said in addition to the instructions given at Norfolk. Your last session has made yetr historical, and I trust that the efforts which have been made to intimidate you and to impede the course of justice will not make, you less faithful and earnest in the discharge °flour public duties. We ought not to surprised that the treasonable and licentletis press of this State and cityahould winca'and rage and become farions when treason and licentiousness are exposed and arraigned i for trial and punishment. Nor should,... be surprised at the enormity and despaiation exhibited when we remember that thin, :city has long been the centre and seat of thagreatest traffic in human beings that has nyer disgraced the world—a traffic had annually employed many hnn drede'of nidial monsters and many millions of catiltal; -subsidizing the press, pulpit and politiCa of the State, rendering Richmond mora - infainons among men for its partici pation great grime than all the cities along ote coasts of Senegambia, Upper and Lower - qtllinia, Congo; Loango, Angola and Benguele;conehined. I address it to the District Attorney or I ad dress it to your_ Honor, as may be the more appropriate, what disposition is proposed to be made with the bill of indictment against Jefferson Davis, now pending, for high treason. Major J. L. Hennessy, Assistant United States Attorney, said that he had been en tirely unaware of the nature of the applica tion just made. In the absence of the Dis trict Attorney, Mr. Chandler, he was not prepared to answer the . question, but he would immediately telegraph to that gen tlemen the fact of such an application having been made. Mr. Chandler would probably arrive in Richmond this_evening. If he failed to arrive Major Hennessy stated that he would himself be prepared to answer the question to-morrow morning. - Judge Underwood addressed the counsel for Mr. Davis, said:—Ain I to understand tbat that will be satisfactory? Mr. Reed—Entirely so. The Court then adjourned until to-morrow at 10 o'clock, A. M. Coal Statements.
