A VOICE PROM PENNSYLVANIA. Hon. Hugh' McCulloch, Secretary of the Treasury of the United states, in .his recent extraordinary speech at Wash ington, excited the risibles of his audi ence by making an allusion to Pennsyl vania and Massachusetts. He was arguing that the people were silent con cerning the great issues of the day du ring the recess of Congress, and he drew the inference from that silence that they were content with the policy of the President, and that it was their repre sentatives alone who were discontented, captious and harsh. While upon this branch of his subject the Secretary said : "We did hear a voice from Pennsylva nia, I believe, and, perhaps, a response from Massachusetts [Laughter], but the people were silent, if not approving." "A voice from Pennsylvania and per haps, a response from Massachusetts!" The Secretary of the Treasury of the 'United States referring to two great loyal commonwealths, thus flippantly to excite the mirth of a crowd that we will not trust ourselves to character ize! Pennsylvania has been heard from, and Xasigiclaugells has responded daring the past five•or six.years ina, way-not to be misunderstood and not at all calcu lated -to excite hughter. When -the country needed a saviour Pennsylvinia was heard from, and Massachusetts re sponded with majorities for Abraham Lincoln which made the election of that good man and pure patriot a certainty, and which secured for Mr. McCulloch a place upon the treasury ladder that has resulted in his mounting to the topmost round of it. When traitor hands were raised against the old flag, and the loyal men of the North were called to the rescue, lest the nation should perish, Pennsylvania was heard from. The men of Berks and Schuylkill were the first to reach the threatened capitaband to guard it from the approach of the Virginians who doubtless formed a large portion of the crowd that laughed de risively the other night, when the Sec retary spoke of Pennsylvania and Mas sachusetts. The Old Bay State re sponded at thatisame crisis by hurrying her Sixth Regiment to the front, and when the men in the ranks of that splendid organization wet the streets of Baltimore with their blood, and made the first vital sacrifice of the war, we greatly doubt whether Mr. McCulloch discovered much cause for laughter in the response that Massachu setts had made to the call of the country. When traitors from a neigh boring State destroyed bridges and tore up rails, between Philadelphia and Mary land, severing all communication by land between the loyal North and the beleagured capital, Massachusetts re sponded by moving her Bth regiment, by sea, to Annapolis, and by the re building of the railroad from that point to the Relay House, re-opened the communication that traitor hands had closed. Mr. McCulloch was in Washing ton, at that time, as Comptroller of the treasury. We doubt whether this re sponse of Massachusetts moved him to mirth then. Pennsylvania was heard from all through the great struggle. She was heard from through the nearly or quite 400,000 of her sons who fought in almost every field from Bull Run to Peters burg, and who maintained the glory of the old flag under the lead of Farragnt, Porter and Dupont. Pennsylvania was heard from when she hospitably cared for 500,000 Union soldiers at her Refresh ment saloons; she was heard from in her hospitals and ambulance system, which gave comfort to the poor fellows who had come home maimed from the hands of men, some of whom laughed so bois terously at the allusion of the Secretary of the Treasury to Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. ' Pennsylvania was heard from when she organized her Reserves, and gave up to the nation at large her thirteen regiments of stalwart men to bear the brunt of many a hardly con tested field, until but 1,500 were left out of 15,000 of as gallant men as ever shoul dered a musket or bore a sword. Penn sylvania was heard from when $BOO,OOO was advanced to the nation out of the State treasury to sustain the Union cause; she was heard from when her great Central Fair netted $1,200,000 for the relief and comfort of the "boys in blue" who were in the field and in hospital; she was heard from in the devastation of Chambersburg; she was heard from when under the lead of one of her own sons the tide of battle was rolled back at Gettysburg, and the traitor Lee was seat whirling home to his native Virginia. She was heard from through Meade, Hancock and Reynolds, and a host of her other gallant sons, from the private in the ranks to the major-general. Pennsylvania has been heard from in the past and she will be again and again heard from in the the future. She has no disposition to allow her ardent patriotism to cool, and no willingness to permit all the huge- sacrifices of the war, in blood and treasure, to go for naught. She will be heard from in an indignant protest against betrayed trusts and in a determined stand for the principle that the country shall at least have security for the future, although there may be no indemnity for the past. When Pennsylvania is next heard from we trust her utterances will not be in a tone to excite the mirth of a mob of Southern traitors, and Northern dough faces and Copperheads. J. E. GOULD, Seventh and Chestnut. $E•IINION OF THE PRESBYTERIAN We learn from St. Louis that the "Old School" Presbyterian General Assem bly has, by a large majority, adopted a resolution providing fcir the appoint ment of a commission to take measures for re-union with the "New School" body. The commission is to consist of nine ministers and six elders, who are to confer with a similar Commission, if appointed, by the "New School" As sembly. In case re-union is deemed de sirable and practicable by the join commission, a report thereon, embody ing measures for re-union.isto be pre sented at the meeting of the "Old School" Assembly in May next. This action indicates a truly fraternal spirit on the part of the, body by which it has been taken, and will probably be met in an equally cordial manner by their brethren of the other branch of this in fluential church.
