WEST PHILADELPHIA.—CertainIy the Most unpleasant of our reportorial duties, is our morning visit to the Police Station, Thirty-seventh and Market streets. Inde pendent of its difficulty of access, perched, as it is, in an out of the way third-story room, it has an air, not to say, a smell, of positive discomfort. You mount several steps, and your ears are delighted with the delicious discord of over two hundred pupils, of both sexes, on; its first floor, as sisted by the blasphemous and obscene language of the over-night prisoners in the black-hole below. Surely the innocent children are made ac quainted with matters and things, whose filthy recitals bring a blush even to those who are daily and nightly ac customed to such ribald language. The black hole below, the little, filthy cellar, with its few dormitories, or, more properly speaking, pens, with their decayed walls, rotten floors, from which what a Scotchrnan would called a "reek" insults thenostrils of the hundreds who are hourly compelled to pause at that point to take passage in the Market street cars. If the Police Depart ment can so disregard the wants of their offi cers where the labor, from the extent of their detail, is so severe, the Board of Health should examine the concern and demand its removal. Since attention has been called to this matter in the EVENING BULLETIN, there is some talk of erecting cells in the yard. This would, necessarily, cause the removal of the school which ought to have a purer locality than this nest of dissipation and crime. The apartment occupied by the pupils would make an unexceptionable roll room, where the officers could be instantly approached, without the danger of breaking a neck, or a leg, in climbing to a sort of a semi-attic. The business yesterday, was not very large. Four persons, principally females, indulged themselves in a family fight, pos sibly on account of-some love affair. We purposely withhold their names, at the re quest of the officials, who think they have ..had enough of police experience to last them _a lifetime. A man, nawed Lewis Kessler, hailing from Newmarket street, in this city, was arrested near Haddington, as the sup posed Jacob Ganter, the accomplice in the Denting murder. He was found to be an insant, man, and was committed to _ prison to await his delivery to his friends, who were already in search of him. Samuel Lofiett and Robert Walker paid their fines for drunkenness, and were discharged. Cen sus 3 , 057.1a5t year, 2,s92—increase, 462. • THAT ALLEGED ACCOMPLICE.—Nothing - has yet been developed to confirm the state ment of Anton Probst, that he had an ac complice in the murder of the Dearing family. Chief Franklin has received a letter from the Captain of Company I, 11th Penn sylvania Cavalry. The writer states that no such man as Probst describes ever belonged to that company. Yesterday the drinking saloons and several sugar houses in the Eleventh and Twelfth Wards were visited to ascertain if any information could be obtained to corroborate Probst's story as to his having worked at a sugar-house with Ganter, seven or eight months ago, and boarded at one or two German houses meanwhile; but none of the boarding-house keepers, nor the workmen in the sugar houses had any recollection of either. Probst or Gan ter. Probst has written to his parents in Ger many, informing them of his situation, and admitting the killing of Cornelius Carey. In the letter he repeats the story of an ac complice. He also wrote that he expected to be hung for the crime he had committed, and hoped they would forgive him fur what he had done. ROBBING ERRAND Bond.—A young man, who gave the name of William Dehaven, was before Alderman Beitler yesterday afternoon, upon the charge of robbing errand boys. His plan was to stop a boy and semi him into a store or some other place with a trifling message, agreeing to hold his bundle until he returned. When the youth got back neither the man nor bun dle could be found. Dehaven, whose opera tions appear to have been carried on quite extensively, was arrested through Mr. Gao. E. Franklin, whose errand boy had been swindled out of a pair of boots. At the hearing he was fully identified by the lad; also by John E. Watts, a lad in the employ of Mr. John Kuhn, tailor„ from whom a pair of pantaloons had been obtained in a similar manner. The accused was held in $4,000 bail for a hearing on Thursday. AN ALLEGED SWINDLE R.—A Ffenohmitn, giving the name'ofJohn J. Coroner Taylor took charge of the body. FEMALE PICKPOCKET.—Susan Savery was arrested yesterday afternoon In a store near Eighth and Market streets, upon the charge of having picked the pocket of a lady of a pocket-beok containing about $9. The pocket-book was afterwards found on the floor of the store. Susan was held in $l,OOO bail by Ald. IDENTIFIED.—The sledge hammer and crow bar left in Knowles' store on Market street, by a couple of burglars, have been identified by Mr. Stephen McCalla, who is engaged in building the tunnel of the Junc tion railroad, under Market street. The articles were taken from the tool house, a few nights ago. HOUSE ROBBERY.—A dwelling house at No. 902 Walnut street, was entered yester day afternoon, and was robbed of a watch and $lO in money.
