The Last Night at Pike's Opera House. A "Midsummer Night's Dream" was the play. The most gorgeously beautiful of Shakspeare's matchless conceptions, garbed in all the magnificence of scenic effects and spectacular display, almost unprecedented in beauty, was before the crowded audience which thronged parquette. dress circle and balennY of that superb auditorium. All was animation and pleasure. Thousands of eyes gazed with astonished surprise upon the scenes of fairy land, into which the immense stage had been transformed— upon the silvery waters of moonlit lakes, in dells where fairy sprites, "the Queen and all her elves" were reveling—upon the magnificence of Duke Theseus's court and retinue, and finally upon that most gorge -OM of all closing scenes. At times the curtain dropped back of the imposing proscenium; the wealth of beauty and classic architectural design concealed from view the beauties of imagery of poet and painter; and the eyes of the audience scanned it for a moment, and then, while that matchless orchestra filled the grand auditorium with majestic music, wandered over the imposingly beautiful dome and ceiling, where all that is great in the imagi native world of mythology had their place in " colors of such divinity," over the orna mentation of gallery, Wcony and dress circle, and the elegance of proscenium boxes, Mr. Pike had constructed this beautiful temple through ambition to ornament the faneen'City of the West, and to identify his name with the storyof Cincinnati's history. He had succeeded; but the ambition hav ing, accomplished its design, he had grown to love, in a measure, far beyond that which would have been bestowed by any other representative of an equal amount of money, this gorgeous portion of a great city's beauty. While managing other property and business of great value, this man of millions had made this temple his idol among earthly things, and to love it had become a portion of his nature, and on this fatal last night, which was so soon to wit ness the destruction of a pity's pride, he looked upon the scenes we have mentioned in common with the audience, and gloried in his work. The hard-handed men of Athens had dis persed, proud Titarda had bowed in love to Bottom of the ass's nowl, Theseus and his court had retired for the night, Oberon and the elfin Puck had mended their mistakes and made the lovers happy, the green baize curtain bad fallen for the last time, the au dience had denarted—fortunately, oh, how fortunately! An hour nearly had elapsed when the demon of destruction, whose work bad been smolderingly progressing, leaped forth from obscurity in the garb of fire, crept up and along those gloriously beauti ful scenes, out through that green baize, up along the rich ornamentation of boxes, along richly gilded pillars, through cushioned seats and chairs, and up, up to that beautiful ceiling and dome. Sounds werechanged as well as scenes. In place of symphonies and stirring melodies from orchestra, were the crackling and roaring tones of the flames which wrapped, in a new and terrible splendor, that wondrously beau tiful interior, and the crash of cymballs and drums of the grand Wedding March had given place to the terrible roar of falling dome and walls. In one hour's time, Pike's Opera Home, enshrouded in flames and smoke, sank to the earth, a mass of ruins—lost to ns, for ever! The people of Cincinnati monrn, with a depth of feeling never before exhibited over any local calamity, the TOTAL LOSS OF PINE'S OPERA Housx.—Cin. Cbm.
