SELF-ANALYSIS. A POEM, NOT BY R. W. EMERSON. There goes a ferret through the mind— Digs at the, very roots of thought, Herbage tmgrazed he often finds, Not previous to self-knowledge brought. He winds his instinct through the heart, Where more than one self secret lies ; Under deep stones we buried part, Supposing we might forget his cries. He overturns these private stones; What does he care for our low moans? His peaceful tugs we cannot miss, His name is Self -Analysis. Let us not fear to follow him, But every new sprout fondly trim, Thanking the vital, subtle power Which thus discloses mental dower. "W'e'd face our secrets long enough To recollect the sin rebuffed, The wrong forgiven, the pure vow made, Self-sacrifice, the first prayer said. Then we'd replace the broken sods, And level them with even ground; If we forget their graves, what odds ! Rerriembering their lessons found. CITY BULLETIN. THE CHESTELYT.—Last night "Caught in the Toils," Brougham's dramatization of Miss Braddon's characteristic romance of "Only a Clod," was handsomely brought out, the parts being in the hands of the ablest members of the company. Mr. Mor daunt played Tredethlyn, the Cornish hero, who after being raised to opulence is caught fh the toils of Julia Desmond (Miss Orton), though he really loves Maud Hillary (Miss Cappelle), and is urged on to a betrothal to Julia, by Roderick Lowther (Mr. Lewis). In tire end the treacherous and selfish na ture of Julia develops itself and the play ends happily, with his marriage to Maud. Mr. Foster had the character of a Lieutenant in the British army, who was represented as a very selfish younger son of a noble family. Mr. Lewis played his elder brother, and was shown to be equally selfish and de signing. Then we had Mr. Chapman as a simple _hearted ex-market gardiner (Mr. Grunderson), with a simple-hearted though terribly sentimental daughter (Miss M. Andrews), who made up most of the fun of the drama. Miss Annie Ward had a part which exactly suited her genius, that of an actress eager for fame on the " boards," im pecunious and disposed to turn every event of life into a grand stage effect. Mrs. Keach had to look pretty and talk plaintively as a supposed wretched victim of ROderick Low ther, butwho turns out to be his lawful wife. The drama fairly bristles. with "points," but the principal artists were too nervous to give them full effect. Of course this defect will be obviated this evening and during the run of thepiece. To-morrow will be the only day performance of "Caught in the Toils." and to-morrow night Mr. Birgfeld's benefit takes place. THE WamsTirr.—We learn that a very fair audience attended the Walnut last eve ning to enjoy the first appearance of Miss Noemie de Marguerittes in this city. She chose the character of Fanchon, in the play of that name, for her debut, and gave it with some power, as we are informed. We will speak further of her efforts hereafter. To night she repeats the same character and will doubtless give its striking points with the power and assurance which only famili arity with an audience give. Tuz ARCH.-Mr. Dillon repeats )iis un rivalled character of Belphegor in the play of that name to-night. AT THE AMERICAN' we haves lively bill this evening. ACADEMY OF MESIC.—An Ethiopian Ope ratic Entertainment will be given on to morrow afternoon. The friends of Mr. Samuel McDougall, familiarly known to the frequenters of the opera, have devised the above means to furnish in his declining years "subsiantial hid." His connection with the theatres ana places or amusement in our city dates back as far as 1818, when• be was engaged at the old Chestnut Street Theatre, then under the management of Messrs. Wood & Warren. Of the members of the company, at that time, the only sur vivors are Mrs. and Mr. E. N. Thayer, Chas. Durang and Chas. Porter. Since then, his face can be remembered as doorkeeper at almost every place of amusement in the city. The performance announced will be of a superior character, as the troupe has an unsurpassed reputation. AT MUSICAL FUND HALL, Wood's Min strels have opened to a good house, and they will draw well during their brief engage ment. AT ASSEMBLY BUILDING, the Minstrel troupe which has been crowding the large hall, are still doing an admirable business. SIGNOR BLITZ is delighting his patrons, as usual, in his own quarters, at Aisembly Building. THE KALEIDOPHOTOSCOPE will be given at Concert . Hall this evening. There will be a gift distribution. "Wrrnou'r P."—Binghamton wishes to be spelled without ap. One of her pleasant people says : Many years since, while the worthy bat eccentric Dr. Robinson (father of Major- General John C. Robinson) officiated as vil lage postmaster here ' the postmaster of Buffalo fell into the too common error of addressing packags intended for this office to Binghampton, instead of Binghamton. The worthy doctor was much annoyed by this, and accordingly he addressed o note'to the Buffalo postmaster, asking him "to keep thelp out of Binghamton." This, how ever, failed to -have the desired effect, as packages continued to appear with the mis spelled address thereon. At length, out of all patience with the stupidity of post masters in general, and the one at Buffalo in particular, the Doctor addressed a package to him as follows: "J— Poslmaster, "Btr - FrALoP, N. Y." Adding: "There! how do you like a p Bu f falo?' This bad the desired effect so far as the Buffalo postmaster was concerned; and if this article proves as salutary upon your it will not have been written in vain.
