C - HESS - COLUMN OP THE PHILADELPEELf. EVENING BULLETIN. FRIDAY, February 16, 1866. Aar communications ,for this column must be directed "Chess Editor of EVENING t BV,ELETIN," and should reach the office, at latest, on Thursday morning. All Problems must be accompanied by the solution and name of the composer. Answers to Correspondents. "J. 8., NEW YORK."—Mr.- Montgomery lost his match with Mr. Lichtenhein through Sheer nervousness, nor were we surprised at the result, well knowing that Mr. M.'s tem perament unfitted 'him for heavy match play. On the other subject we can only say that "slow play," "laying back for bets," and "dining out," are excuses that are fri volous and contrary to fact. "PHILADELPHuS."—The following Phila delphia papers have had Chess Columns, e. g. Sunday Mercury, Evening Journal, Sportsman Chronicle, War Press, Saturday Night, and our own paper. _Some of them died from injudicious management, and others from decline of interest manifested. Our own column was started Oct. 30th, 1858. " STIIDEET."—If Lou. beat your adversary seven games to fouin_ you are entitled to give him a pawn and me. If he objects, then decline playing with him. "J. C. W., PHILADELPHIA.."—Can't you send us your first number? We should like to have a complete file of your column. You have been put on the exchange list. A match for the first seven games ha been commenced at the Rooms of the Phila delphia Chess Club, between Mr. Reichhelrn and Mr. J. I. Jellett. The conditions are that Mr. Reichhelm is to give the odds of the pawn and two moves in every game and that either party winning seven games to four, shall be entitled to a change of.dds in his favor. <The first game was played last Monday evening, and after a prolonged struggle, resulted in a draw. On Wednes day evening two more games were played, both of which were scored by Mr. Reich helm. THE PHILADELPHIA CHESS CLUB.-A spirited meeting of this Club was held on Tuesday evening, mid after a full discussion of the Chess interest of Philadelphia, a com mittee was appointed to procure a more suitable location, in the central portion of the city. As soon as they shall succeed in doing so, due notice will be given of the change. LE PALEMEDE FEAN9AIS.—This journal has ceased to appear, having died a natural death some months ago, from its miscon duct. Requieseat in Pace. MATCH. BETWEEN MESSES. STIaraTZ AND DE VEEE.—This match was brought to a conclusion January 3d, when Mr. de Vere gained his seventh game, the score at the end giving to Mr. de Vere 7, Mr. Steinitz 3, with two drawn. The victory in this highly interesting contest reflects great credit upon the skill of the young British player, espe cially when we consider that most of his games were won in excellent style, and that a majority of four games in a short match is very decisive. Mr. Steinits, though he can not be said to shine in giving this class of odds, appears to have played very well in deed, with the exception of one, or at most two, not obvious oversights, through the whole match. He has taken the loss of the match with that imperturbable good humor which is se commendable a quality in a first-rate Chess player, and candidly at tributes his defeat to the plain fact that his opponent is too strong for the odds.—London Field.
