ANNUAL SOIREE OF THE BRISTOL CHESS CLUE.—The annual soir6e of the Bristol Chess Club was held in the Lecture Hall of the Athenmurs, - Bristol, on the Sth inst. There was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen, amongst the latter being Captain H. A. Kennedy, Messrs: E. Thorold, W. Hampton (of the St. Georre's Chess Club), Fedden, Thomson, •Meeker, Berry, Hal loway, Dr. Benham, the Revs. W. Evans, A. C. Rowley, C. Ward; &e. The Hall was gaily decorated with flags and banners, and some beautiful speeimens of Chinese and other Chessmen were contributed by some of the members. The company assembled shortly after six o'clock, and play was im mediately commenced, and carried on, with little intermission until nearly midnight. The chief interest during the evening, how ever, was the playing of nine games simul taneously by . Mr. Thorold against that number,• of amateurs. These games were eagerly watched by the bystanders, and the quickness and:: accuracy with which the single player moved excited great admira tion. The result of the, contest was that Mr. Thorold won every game. The company present were greatly pleased with the enter tainment provided for them, and expressed their thanks to Messrs. Boorne and Berry for their exertions. In the course the even ing the new chemical toy, "the` fiery ser pent," was exhibited, and attracted great attention.—London Era; , Problem No. 416. BI MR. S. A.
