JFjebbuakt 2, 1861 lEOH THE DEPABTMENI OF THE GULF. rCorree pondence of the N. Y. Herald. ] kLw Omeans, Jan. 26—There is no longer any use in disguising the fact from your readers that some important movement is about to take place in this department, as it is , known to every one in New Orleans. Troops are being hurried across Lake Pon chartrain and landed at Madisonville, Vessels, as I remarked in my last letter, are maneuver ing about the mouth of the Pascagoula. Ad miral Farragut has not come here with his fleet for no purpose, and in fact I will tell you that all parties in this city declare that Mobile is about being attacked by Farragut on the water and the troops' of General Banks on land. May ••their prophecy prove true. . Yesterday Admiral Farragut and Major- General Banks paid a .visit to the sloop-of-war Portsmouth, now lying in the river, and were hospitably entertained by her efficient com mander. , ■ - A-shocking and mysterious murder took place in thia, neigliborhood a few days ago. It i. appears that a hunter, named Perrin, started s' for Barratiria, in a small boat, with the pro- V. ceeds .of a cargo of game which he had brought \ ■ to tprln'.’The next morning the boat was found \ m Harvey’s canal, with the hunter’s hat lying \ at the bottom, with blood all around it. There \ is no doubt that he was murdered for the little amount which he had in his possession, proba- NWy only a few dollars. -The body has not yet efc. Been discovered. - - Colonel N. A; M. Dudley’s brigade of cavalry paraded {through the streets of this city on Sunday morning last, presenting a fine sight. This is the largest body of cavalry ever seen together in this city. ’ General Shepley has appointed District At ’torney J. IV. Thomas to act as Attorney- Geneial for the First District Court. ' All remains quiet in Texas and along the Teohe. r GEN. KELLY’S DEPARTMENT. Headquarters Departmest of 'Western ■Virginia, Fob. 2—B P. M —This morning - Col. Mulligan advanced np the New-Creek valley, drove the enemy back, re-occupied Burlington, and then Moorfleld Junction, in the Patterson Creek Valley. About noon to-day five hundred of Gen. Rosser’s rebel cavalry reached the railroad at North Branch and Pat terson Creek bridges, sis. and eight miles from Cumberland, cutting tho telegraph wires and to destroy bridges. We drove the enemy on, however, before he could do any serious damage, and extin guished the fires. We lost a few killed and wounded. The telegraph will be up to-morrow and the railroad in running order again in thir ty-six hours. A portion of the Ringgold ca 0, valry, Company F, of the 54th Pennsylvania, and the 159th Pennsylvania, were slightly en • gaged. Trains arrived to-night from Patter son’s creek report the enemy being pursued. - - General Kelley’s combinations are working well. The road is considered a trifling affair. Telegraph operators are out putting up the wires. A bridge repairing train goes out Irom Cumberland at daylight. ' We have taken some prisoners. THE RESIGNATION OF SENATOR WHITE— LETTER TO HIS FATHER. Judge Thomas White, father of Senator Harry White, has written the subjoined letter s explaining the-delay in handing in the letter of resignation of his son : HAP.KIBr.URO, Feb. 1, ISM— Hon. John P. Pen. ney. Speaker of the Senate of Pennsylvania: —Slit:— In tendering yon the resignation of Major Harry Wbite, of liis seat as a member of the senate of Pennsylvania, a few words of explanation of the : delay may not be improper. Although dated pn the 16th of November last, it did not reach me for more than a month after that period, and being’ then engaged in endeavoring, through a private channel, to effect his release, with every prospect of success, the delivery of the resignation was postponed. ;That effort, through an unfortunate event, failed. But at that time an effort was being made by the General Government, which I, in common with others to whom it was known, had every reason.to believe and to hope would be successful, and trouble and expense would be thus saved to the Commonwealth, and the Senate would be in a position to do business sooner than by any other course. The result is known, and therefore I hand you the resignation of Major Harryj White, which has never been out of my possession for a single moment since I received it. Throughout the whole transaction I have acted in good faith, from the purest motives and without any view of self-inter est. The document was sent to me to be used at such time and in such manner as in my discretion I should think proper. He is a son for whom 1 feel the most tender affec tion; he has a family whose feelings hare been most painfully exercised dnringhis prolonged cap tivity, and I have every reason to believe as well as to hope that public interests would not suffer by withholding this resignation for a short time. " Very respectfully, your obedient servant, THOMAS WHITE. A Feabfui, MaiaTjy.— A disease of a fearful and malignant type, which proves fatal in a few hours, has recently manifested itself In the lower part of Bucks -county. By some, it is called^ “spotted fever,” but be its name what it may, it is not only alarming hilt fatal in its effects. One case occurred in Bristol borough about Christmas, and another in Bristol town-r ship a few days' subsequently. This week we are iold George W. Brown; of Falls township lost a lovely daughter of great promise, after a few days’ sickness, and a second daughter was sick with it on Wednesday last. We leam, . also, that something of the same nature pre vails in; Morrisville, and . that six deaths had occurred in the three first' days of last week, and on Wednesday momiDg there were four persons lying dead in the Borough. On Thurs ' day the undertaker had eight funerals to attend to. Some of these people are first taken with .pain in the head, then 5 a blindess, with inability to speak, and some lose their hearing. • None survive sixty hours, and many do not last forty , sight hours' after the attack. —Doylestown • Democrat. - Railboad Accident.— An accident occurred On Monday morning on the Northern Central railway,, which resulted in the breaking of two locomotives, the killing of several cattle and ; the. wounding of a number, it appears that a stock train bound south was in the act of com ing out of the switch when an empty stock train, going north, passed up, and they ran to gether. Both locomotives were broken, and : flie cars - considerably piled together.
