' ~i :w: w; =~, In the early history of this country Sax . was an important item iv With entered into Sts manufactures. --Oar good-grandmothers considered a knowledge of spinning and weaving an Indispensable accomplishment, and every girl was inducted into the prac tice of these household arts. In those days cotton was scaieely known, and our cloths were linens grid woolens, both the product of bane-work:, The raw fabrics were card ed and prepared for manufacture by hand, for a long period, but carding machines were finally , introduced, which converted wool info "rolls" which. were spun by hand, and subsequently woven by the same means. But no machine was inven ted to prepare.thellar, and its manufacture was continued by hand till its use was sn perreded by cotton. • In the early Manufacture of this article, the weaving was 'done by hand, the yarn being spun by machinery and then distri buted throughout the country to be woven. After thin, the manufacture of flax almost entirely ceased, and When in the progress of cotton' manufactures the power-mom was adopted, the quelition was settled, and manufactures of flax were only to be re membered. The' fabrics, 'however, sur vived, and remained a fitting tribute to the industry Mid Manual skill of the mothers and daughters of the generation that has passed. Occasionally, now, there are fam ilies where - the linen :has descended and is treasured as a legacy. Much of this old linen has furnished Pit and bandages for our noble apny. • Within a few years the attention of man ufacturers has been ' directed to- the possi bilities cf again resuming the manufacture of flax, by machinery. Considemble dila eulty has been experieneed in reducing the fiber, to a proper state to be operated upon, and numerous experiments Lase been in stituted. Various digrees of success have attended'these efforts, and there is a good prospect that the culture and manufacture of flax will, ere long, become an important element in our industry. We were not aware that so great progress hadbeen made, and such a variety of articles had been man ufactured, till we saw, a day or two since, at the • offiep or Governor Smith, 'Several kinds of goods made from flat fiber, such OA carpets, ;heavy crash and seanslo-s bags, the other articles being introduced to show the applicability and value of the fiber, - large quantities of it, till recently, being thrown away after. the seed had been se . • cured. On inquiry, we learned that Goy. Smith as early as September, 1862, determined to enternpon the business. - ' lie erected works at Delaware,' Ohio, which, have been in Orkiation forinore than a year.
