The name of the operator is,Charles IL Dickens, and be had only been In the employ of the company about one month. - Suspicions were at • once aroused that he hail not been 'acting honestly, and was endeavoring to tilde his peculations ender the pretence of having. been robbed. lie .was.indoewl to, visit this eity,:in _company with a man named Wilson an employee of the, com pany, and on his arrival here was arrested and committed .to jalffpr a further hearing on Thurs day next. °tithe way down he stated to Wilson that he had been robbed of4.rery :cent he had, and that a portion of the money taken was his own. 'The amount belonging' to the company was t 240. Wilson paid all his expeasei on the From Dickens' own statement, a bad ease Is made out against him. He states that he had been employed In the office at Meadville, under the name of C. 11. Billings, bet was discharged there, after which he went to 011 City and was hired there. On being asked' why be changed his name, he admitted that he did not want the company to know that be. had been discharged at ,Meadville. In reference 'to the robbery, he alleged that he had the money all In his pocket book, Is-the office (or rather. in the mom of the hotel where- the office Is located), and being called to receive a dispatch, placed the book on the table and covered it over with some papers. In five or ten min utes'after, when he returned to the table, the money was missing. There were a number of persona In the rOoto, but he could not tell who had taken the pocket-book. This story - Is not believed, and theallegation is that Dickens has approprialed the Money of the company to his own use - This '.de i Is strengthened by the fact that he was wl.hetit means when he took the situation, and since that time has spent consider ably more money tuan his salary amounts to-- . paying his boarding and purchasing clothing to the amount of fifty or sixty dediars. JACOB FORSYTH, Forsyth, Bros. ft Co., 74 Water street. .....710 BO 00 1 00 00 um [From the Hot., Journal, June 41A.] In every business or protesston, indeed in ever department of science or skill, there is always some acknowledged bead—some ,ne who stands out in bold relief among his fellows, as a sort of leader. In the study and treatment of Deafness and Ca tarrh its special diseases, Dr. li. B. LicnirKiLL, of this city, occupies just the fiosition above de• teritieL lie has devoted years of Inbor to this spe ciality, and le now reaping the reward of hi. indus ary. The editorial C 0111011.4 of the Tribune, of a re cent date, bear witness to the Doctor's success in his department of medicine. We quote the pars 'tax or A Dt.tP ]Tura—Louis Loowlngstnel aged fourteen years GI age, born in Germany, came to this city when he' was about two years of age Soon after arriving here he was taken sick and lost his hearing. By degrees he became - first deaf se, then dumb. For nearly ten years he was a mum unable to hear the loudest voice, or to articulate e word. AbOut one yea r ago he was placed in th hands of Dr. tiownuLT., Wll.O bell so Mr suc ceeded in restoring to him his lost powers of hear ing: and utterance that he can converse with those who speak to him distinctly arid deliberately. Du ring the past four or dye monthshehas been under the tuition of Mr. Benneche, and has mule conski yrable propels in reading and arithmetic." Daring been supplied with the lad's address, We further investigated the matter and discovered that previous to calling on Dr. Lighthill, the youth's case wait considered hopeless, and he was for two years an inmate Of a Deaf nod Dumb Asylum. The Bev. John Nott, D. D., Professor In tinionCollege, Schenectaily,in a published-letter, tenders his grat itude to Dr. Lighthlll for treating successfully his ease of Deafness. Rev. Fred. LIGIITHILL—Dear Sir Under date of Inert]; 14th, I sent you n careful statement of my case, Its former treatment,. my failure to, obtain relief:ire that direction, my resort to your treatment, and Its beneficial results • • . I have bee.n, from the winter of the year 1844, sub ject to vloleneperlodical attacks of Catarrh, mark ed by strong forcible symptoms, violent laffammw lion of the lining membrane, of the cavities. of the bond; accompanied in thefkiet.A. egos by a watery discharge from: the nose, subsequently becoming acrid and yellow and toward the close or the attack purulent: awl bliaody. These attacks "produced a most elistressing species of headache, occurring pe riodically each day fora period varying from one to. three weeks, sometimes so violent as to Inc-spool talc ma for business and confine me to my bed. At times the attendant Inflammation would extend to the teeth, producing toothache; or to the - throat,' occasioning hoarseness and.partial loss of voice; and twice within the tastier, years lt has so street ed the bit eye confine: me, for week* to a darkened room.. . I had tried medicine, and applications of various muff% and other catarrhal preparations of some hair a dozen kinds; application to the head of camphor, ginger and hot fomentation of differ eat klnds; and in connection with these thalami emetics or cathartics employed to Induce ,counter aetion. But none of these had produced any per manent. Improvement, and those few Inaunces in which temporal relief was afforded It wan at- the. , expense of so much strength in to leave me greatly exhausted. Under these circumstances I .was led, • though with reluctance, from the supposed incurs. ; Witty of the diseate, to make a trial of your treat ment. I found It noon even beyond •my hooey reaching tile disease nett had Wryer been reached before, road alleviating its symptoms to an extent' whlch ' l had supposed impossible. At the time - gave you my former CCAlflol‘tt, while I did not feel assured of a complete cure. I had obtained a mite till relief which amply repaid me for my trial of your treatment, and which. &dialled •me that the treatment was ad effective as It was •alreple and philmlophical. A substantial escape from myown. attacks of catarrh, for the unprecedented period of nearly half a year, and that in spite of severe ob. burrenees of sheens which would have formerly. rendered such an attack ineritable, was, to ,ele,• . ..proof of =lmportant yuccas. It Is now sixmonths Since I sent you that statement, and while it is un :pleasant to appear thus constantly, and in this guise, before the public, it seems to me a matter of simple juattee to yourself, and tor those who may be suffering as I was, to add (hail am not oEoy fully satisfied ILIt to tlllO utility WAIL effirscy or your metltod of treating catarrh as was six months ego, but X am nen - of the belief that if there Is such • things' n cure for clarente anorak, tn my case a. substanUal cure lias beeneflreted. . - Your2 ' r aIIi e V U ERI D bK S.
