The entrance to the river is obstruct ed by three bars, known as the Western, Blain and New Inlet bars. Of the rebel de fenses we hare.thaannexed account: On Federal Point islocated the celebrated ! Fort Fisher, one of the. largest earthworks of its style, in the Confederacy. Its firma• meat is unequaled in range orelßeiency. It mounts about fifty guns, many of the heavl. est Blakely rifles • near it are a number of small works called vraterbattiries, all mount ing grins of heavy caliber. Similar works exist opposite FortFisher, the gansof which mingle their fire wittethat of the fort. To gether, these works command a distance of. six miles, three in each direction. There is a foimidable earthwork a little further up the coast, near the lighthouse, the guns of . which - cover the seaward Approach to the New Inlet bar entrance.. Near Flirt Fisher, a battery placed upon - an artificial sandhill ' threatens ranch annoyance to our fleet. Its guns are able to throw plunging shot as well as nrojectiles fir'out seaward. The enhance by way of Newlnlet * is so 'hateful and guarded byheary artillery that teasels attempting to go in or run by the forts would be subjected to a tremendous 'crossfire.' . ITeavy .frigates whose draft of water - precluded their crossing. - the bar, would, of necessity, anchor outside or 'Mil up and down the.beachj or perhaps they will Sail in a circle, as did Dupont's fleet at the atptureof Port Royal. By this method they would be enabled to keep their guns. cool, the men :fresh and al the same time seriously interfere with the accuracy of the • rebel fire. The ground over which the heavy vessels would fight is a trifle over two miles' from -Fort Fisher, yet it is - within effective 'range at a moderate elevation of the guns. On Zeke's Island, and opposite Fart Slither, there is sald to exist a small water battery, mounting nine puts. The entrance to the westem bar is also well guarded, and its approaches are oc pnded in the most approved manner known to engineering science.; The first works to encoimtered, going to this way, are situ ated on Oak Island, near the light - houses.lt is not generally:known how many guns are in position them, but undoubtedly there is a sufficient nfunher to do a fleet much damage before tbev can 'be silenced Or passed. On Bald head, the southern ex tremity of 'Smith's Island, -is situated a small work, irbose-guns throw their mis siles across the, channel. Next comes Fort Caswell, built by the United States before 'the war. It is a work with five tildes, three of them mounting guns, about sixty all told. This work has been strengthened recently,. and is undoubtedly a very:formidable affair. Possibly the ironlelads may operate against this work.: Jest above 'Fort Caswell is a small work, located on battery Island. Oa the right hand .side of the river, .coning down, is Fort Johnson, situated at' Smith villa, and about one and a half miles from Fort Caswell. Above this, at _carious pelints'on the river, are said 'to be batteries of rations sizes, but mostly small and of little importance. . • The Late Earl of Carlisle When.
