While thin Ling of the conduCt of the 'demo cratic party during the rebellion, and their brazen-faced impudence since the deep-throat ed cannon of treason and rebellion has ceased Is roar, I am often reminded of an anecdote counseled with Old Mother MckINEVS cat. Said cat was a mortal enemy to rats and mice. She gave them no rest in the granary, in the house, 'or in tba barn ; for " Like the famed cat of ohi ItAIIELAIR FOUl'at, She scratched 'em and bit 'cm and ,clawed 'cm and tore 'cm." This made the old lady think a good deal of her cat. Well, °Le day the old lady went to the store and bought some new plates together with mono., cups and saucers. On getting home, she placed the crockery on a shelf, and went to bed and dreamed of the good breakfast she would have next morning—how good_would taste the meat on those new plates, and how good would relish the tea in those new cups and saucers. But alas for all human calculations! " the best laid schemes of men and mice (and of women too) oft gang aglee." The cat in her rambles during the night got among the crockery, threw it off the shelf and there it lay in the morning on the floor a heap of ruins. Tbe, old duly, on awaking and ending what ass done, tilled with rage, stung with disappointment, seized a'big pair of tongs and rushed out to make war—a war of extermination—on the old cat. She found Grimalkin basking in the sun, looking as innocent as if she had never dreamed of crockery in all her life. "Alt, yes!" said Old Mother MdosEv, rushing up and, flourish. leg the tongs for a dreadful blew, "you look very innocent—you try to, make folks think you are dreadful pions, *hen you have been raising the devil all night." Down came tho tongs, and the old cat's head was smashed to pieces. So it is with the democratic party. They would fain make us all believe that they are the only patriots hi the country', when their motto is "link or ►vin." But the tongs old find them,- the indignation of an outraged, oppressed and downtrodden people will be upon them: Now, the black man has the ballot through° t the bind. lam of opinion, Mr. Editor, that em critic " niggers " will be about sii.plenty ea hens' teeth in old age. Franklin, March 91, 1870. Mrceoar. ler Mu. Favron : A word, if you please, Concerning our local names, Ac.: In Isaac A. CHIPMAN'S History of Wyoming, published in 1830, we find the signification of several Indian names as given bytbe Rev. The Indians on the head waters of the Susquehanna say that it sig nifies "crooked river." " YAILO2I" gives us an other signification—"broad, shallow river." Who is right? In referring to a purchase of 1725, "Ttaom " says "Branford comity was then a part of Ly coming county." By reading the Surveyor- General's report for tho.year ending November 30, 1867, we learn that Lycoming county was formed from a part of Northumberland county, April 13, 1796. - By examining Itr.antrto +How zu:s map of Pennsylvania, published in 1792 and dedicated to Tamils Mums, Governor of the Senate and Hpuse!of Representatives of Zennsylvania, it may 'county seen that "Tyoga" township of Luzerne county embraced the northern half of the territory now included in Bradford county, and that Wyalusing township 'embodied the remaitider. I have no desire to say any services of mine for the Master, except to thank Him for the en joyment I have had in doing anything for His sake and the children.
