MCMAHOX, C'ommit- BURGLARY AND THBFT.—TWO yonug men, Cyrus Cornell and Sylvester Rosen grant, were brought to town last week to be put in jail. They are charged with entering the Factoryville Depot and stealing there from, two pairs of boots, a five-gallon keg of whiskey, a lot of postal currency A' c. i 'ornell is said to be from Bradford Co. : and a pretty hard customer. Rosengrant gaye bail for his appearance to answer at the April sessions. The key was turned on Cornell. An attempt to conceal too much of the whiskey inside of their shirts at one time, we understand, led to the discovery that they were the takers.— Tmkhannock L<GR DOBBIN'S DOMESTIC ILLUSTRATED BIBLE which has recently been put in cir culation in this State by Mr. H. A. Street of Harrisburg, has many valuable and in teresting features peculiar to itself and the wants of the people. We are happy to learn that the agents for this excellent work are meeting with great success, and we think that teachers or any one wishing for honorable and useful employment, would do well to address Mr. Street at once for particulars, and secure territory. See his advertisement in another column. Agents selling the Bible only, are not re quired to pay license. See 70, Article 32, IT.l T . S. W. Burrell of Chatham, was destroyed by lire last week. It will be remembered that the dwelling this was built to replace was burned less than a year ago. Mr. Bur rell is unfortunate. We hear that his neigh bors, who aided him to build anew, are moving generously to his aid. Tioga Agi- vVe understand that a large tannery is to be erected in this place du ring the present season. It is a fine loca tion for an establishment of the kind, as the supply of hemlock bark is inexhaustible.— Athens Repuh. t&r The grading on the Railroad between this place and Waverly has already been resumed. We understand that the road is to be completed early in June.—Att ens Republican. flaf- Spring work is coining on in the Field, Orchard and Garden, and in the gronndß about the House as well as in the House. The best information about th<- niost pleasant and profitable method of per forming this work is. ot course, to be found in that large, and reliable and cheap journ al, the American Agriculturist. We have the April number, and it fully carries out the Publishers' promise to always keep onmake ing every number better than the previous one. This, like every other issue thus far this year, has eight large pages extra. This single number contains between forty end fifty pleasing and instructiv engravings, one of them a full page, and several others very large aud beautiful. A full three-page cal ender of Work to be Done will furnish many useful hints for the Farm, Garden and Household. A slashing artiele on Humbugs exposes by name a large number of swin dlers of country people. There are, besides, more than a hundred articles and items full of instruction to every cultivator of a garden plot, or a farm. More than 150,000 people now enjoy the advantages offered by the 1 jrirulturiif, and everybody else, and his wife (and children also), should have it.— Its beautilul pictures are alone worth many times its cost, which is only $1 50 a year, or four copies lor 85. Take our advice and try the Agriculturist this year and we will guarantee satisfaction. ORANGE JUDE A t A ., 41 Fark Row, New York City, are the . üblishers. ATTEMPTED MIRDER.—As Mr. A. S. Washburn was going home on Saturday eve ning last when ou a comer of Jackson street he was knocked down and robbed of bis watch, some notes, and other papera, and dragged across the railroad and thrown in to a clay pit. ilia assailants evidently in t< uded to kill him, as he was terribly cut about the head and face, and there is no doubt that he was left for dead He was rendered senseless by the blows he receiv -d. and knows of nothing that transpired. He was found nearly an hour afterwards ud taken to his former residence, near the coal works, where his wounds were dressed aed he was then taken home. He is at present doing well, notwithstanding his nu merous wounds and bruises. The villains who attempted to take his life were no louht actuated by the hope of obtaining money, as no one who knows him could in flie, injury on him for any other purpose. John Weston, who does not remember him - Mony of us have noted ids progress aa we saw him from time to time, from that early orphaned infancy, through childhood and youth to the first flush of manhood in which alas he was cut oft". A boy of won derful promise and beauty, a young man without a failing, an esample in his brief life and early death to others of his age,aye and not alone of his own age, all of us. the old, those in the meridian of life asj well us the young, might read a solemn and touch ing lesson in the triumphant death of this dear boy. He bore his terrible sufferings with more than patience and manliness, with christian fortitude and faith,he looked forward to death eagerly, joyfully, saying with child-like confidence that he felt such inward peace, such a longing to be with God, 'to fold bis arms on h s Saviour's neck" that he knew his sins must be forgiv en, for 'God is too good to hold out false hopes to me, I know this happiness conies from him." Which of us could meet death with common presence of mind - far less with constant prayer, hymns of praise and gladness [aud words of consolation to our friends ! Nobly self-forgetful to the last, ha exhorted those around him to lead christian lives, and endeavored greatly to reason away their grief, he left farewell messages to all, "say good by to my friends, give my love to the boys ; tell them I hope again to see them all in our Father's House." Adieu John Weston, happy, happy boy, yon have fallen asleep peacefully in the bosom of God, you have safely landed on the shining shore with those glorious angels you almost seemed to see in your last moments, and left us who tarry behind you in this vale of tears an example of many virtues. niisccllancous.
