I k BIG IMPROVEMENT In the Distribution of General Mer chandise at All Centers. SO DEPRESSING FACTORS KOTED. Trade Banning Steadily Ahead of Last Tear's Volume. LATE CHOP GOSSIP AND RETIBED PRICES Saturday, Sept 24V Trade reports from all points have been decidedly better during the week end ing to-day and the movement of general merchandise at this point, while not es pecially heavy, has been more satisfactory than at any time since the' beginning of the autumn season. The most encouraging factors were the improvement in the iron trade, the abatement of the cholera scare, good crop reports and the comparative ease of collections. According to the bank ex ihanses the week's volume of business was i.3 per cent larger than last week and 10.7 Jier cent larger than that of the lite week of 691. Gossip on the Crops. Trime: Good weather for maturing corn crop continues. Additional reports from Nebraska confirm statement of damage to corn by frost in low lands. This does not pee in to bo confined to any one locality, but Is very general all over the State. Similar reports from Iowa, but not so extensive: 23 to 50 per cent of tbo corn crop may now bo considered safe from frost. In the northern portion of the corn bolt largest proportion of the corn Is very sappy and will require remainder of this month and probably longer to put it beyond danger lino. Fine w eek for winter wheat seeding north of Onto river. South of the river no seeding will be donebetoie October. Fine week also tor threshing spring wheat. Late threshings show wheat lacking in weight as well as yield. Xo increase in movement as Ions as present prices continue. The Sural Sew 3 "brier says: "Potatoos are no w selling in the London (England) market at STJc to 5c a bu by the ton or wholesale rates. This price is demanded by commis sion men. 1 arraers receive the above prices less the freight and commission. There is much Intel est among American growers to know what to expect in the wav ot probable pi ices for potatoes. Can wo expect a great advance in prices! We do not think so. While the American crop is nndonbtedly the lowest .or many years, the Canadian crop is unusually large. Under the old tariff of 15e a bu la co shipments were an nually made. The JIcKlnley bill added 10c per bu to this taiitfand shipments dropped off at once, though this result was largely due to fie low prices bore bv reason o: an unusually large crop. A difference of 10c in the tariff will not keep out Canadian pota toes if the price should rise 12c per bu." The Dsily Trade Bulletin, or Chicago, says: "The market for bops is quiet as jut. A few consignments Irom the East are being re ceived. The crop in that quarter has turned out well, with the yield about as last year and quality somewhat better. Advices Irom the l'aciflc coast also are favorable, but none of these hops have as yet come to market. Advices irom auioad are too meager to lead to any definite conclusions as to what the outcome on the other iile has been. Offerings here are as yet small and demand also is tame. New Tork hops, uew crop, are reported selling at 2021c" The Sugar Situation. Willett &. Gray's weekly sugar circular s: Eaws advanced 1 1-lGc for centrifugals, refined unchanged. Local stock of raw sugar remains small and as holders ask an Advance for it business is restricted and buyeis' neetlsare supplied elsewhere as far as pos-ible. stocks decreased largely during the week oningto the delays incident to the quarantines hero and abroad which have in terrupted receipts of beef sugar now in ii-rbor and delayed vessels sent from here to Cuba by ten days' quarantine there be foie leading. The now crops of cane sugars, on which dependence must be placed if beet sugars are excluded, are all reported by cable this week to bo maturing a montn later than usual, which adds to the uncer tainty and suspense of the moment. The beet sugar now In harbor here and at Phila delphia and Boston has been released under satisfactory restriction" liv the quirantlne authorities say about 20,000 tons, which will be available lor use during the coming week, fcnd lurther afioats will very likely be avail able unless the cholera scare is renewed. Henry A. Uavcmeyer, of the American Sugar Kcfining Company, says: "We have Experienced no Inconvenience from the delay in the arrival of vessels carrying beet sugars, and we r.re filling all our orders. The report that we are leluiug orders lorluture deiiveiieo in granulated sugars is not true. we never sell granulated Sugars in that way. All sales are ordered to be delivered as soon as wc can turn the sugars out ol our leflner ia. This month is always a very busy one, r.nd the demand for granulated sugar is iery great: this has undoubtedly been in creased this year by the 'cholera scare. We have alwaj s made it a rule to prevent spec ulation in high grade sugars, and It is for" this reason we have adopted the plan of adjusting all orders. Xo one gets more than Ins li:tre of sugar, and the price Is kept at its old figure. We have plenty of sugar and all bona fide orders are being filled. I do not expect to tee any stringency in the su?ar market. Wo are recusing no orders nor do v.o expect to. do so." IIog Tacking. October opened Jc lower at 45c, held lor some time around 434oJge, udvanccd to 4654c, weakened and closed at 45Jc.
