A PANIC IN PORK. The Bull Campaign on. In Earnest, Lead as Rinw Suppose Dy Corn The Ad vance in That Cereal, However, Is Com paratively Slight V. h-at Dull. CHICAGO It was a lively day In the pork pit. The shorts became alarmed In earnest, and the result was the sharpest advance since the bull campaign In that market began. Many lool&d upon the'flrmness of last week as temporary and counted on a reaction before any further advance. This morning there were 35.0QO bogs posted, and the market at yards quoted slow. This was looked upon as a turning point, but there was no turn. AH products opened where they closed on the bulge Saturday and began to move higher. This was thought to be under the lead of corn: but corn advanced o and stopped, while products kept on higher. The export movement, being away beyond the ordinary lor the season, was an influ ence. Then this country showed some re sponse to the bull market, as usual, after several days of an advanoing maiket. Some stop-loss orders were executed. Thtsscalp ers, who were on the wrong side, bid for all products. Foreign houses were also said to be getting back stuff sold at lower price. Altogether, n stampede occurred before the close, which was at a net gain of 3537Ke for porK,.wuu iara ujc on top oi a similar bulge Saturday. Bins gained 20o from Sat urday. In wheat trading was light. The feeling was a trifle firmer, but fluctuations were confined within narrow limits. The opening was H4.a higher than Saturday's closing figures and advanced o more; held quite firmly, and the closing was about JJo higher than Saturday. A larger decrease in the visible supply than had been expected, to gether with rainy weather and an uncon firmed report that the Uatoh bill was de clared uncenstttutlonal by the Judiciary Committee, tended to create a firm tone. If their is any line accumulated with a view of squeezing the July shorts in corn, there was no Indication of manipulation to day. The market was narrow .winding up with a gain of e compared with Saturday. Oats closed n om i, to c higher, after ex periencing a moderately active session. Clos ing. ABTICT.I8. Wheat. No. 2. The Gangs a Little Broader Than for Some Days, But Values a Trifle Below High Water Mark Pleasant Valley Lets Go Again. The stock market was dull at the opening, Dut became more active as the day wore on. There was a fair sprinkling of buying orders, but they were generally below the market. There was no pronounced feeling, but tho tone was somewhat bearish. This was notable at the afternoon session. Pleasant Valley was the principal attrac tion. It opened a little better than Satur day's close, but holders who appeared to be anxious for profits, or as a measure of pre caution, sold it down. This was said in some quarters to be in line with the policy of some of Its supporters to deter still heavier selling by purchasers during the earlier depression. It was said negotiations for consolidation with Manchester bud gone no further than the talking stage. Proposi tions have been mude, but remain to be acted upon. There was nothing striking In other direc tions. Philadelphia Gas was a fraotion weaker than on Saturday, but Pipeage was stronger. Plttsbnrg Traction Improved Hi So&itlon, as did Luster and United States lass common, but Switch lost ground. Some attention was given to the banks, but there were no sales. There was only one sale at the first call 10 Switch at l'yi. The second call was better. Sales were 30 Central Traction at 18. 420 Bir mingham Traction at 26 all taken by Kuhn Bros. and 100 Pipeage at 12. With nothing outside to stimulate animation, and fallendeep Into, the professional rut, the stock- market re mained dnll to-day, though It presented a trim front despite some London selling and further exports of gold. The trading, how ever, especially among the leading stocks, failed to develop any feature of note, and the great lack of Interest In the course of ptioes was, If anything, intensified to-day. London was oredlted with selling some of its favorites, but a more bullish feeling on the Grangers was reported from Chicago, and some buying of the grangers, attributed to that center, sufficed to give the list a Arm temper, aided by the purchases of Burling ton and Atohlson by Boston houses. The only movements of Importance were In the specialties, and a large fractional gain in Mew England was followed by a selling movement which wiped .out the advance, with some Increase In animation. Some selling of the Grangers occurred late in the day on unfavorable rumors in regard to corn, but the close was dull and steadv to Arm generally at about the opening. The trading reached only 118,817 listed and 10,931 unlisted. Tho total sales of stocks to-day were 129, 281 shares. Including Atchison, 8,195; Chi cago Gas, 6.800; Hocking Valloy, 1,700; Lonls vllle and Nashville, 4.100; Northern PaclAo prererred, 3,860; New England.6,550; Beading, 11,500; St. Paul, 16,150; Union Pacidc, 4,229. Low Bates Miking Eastern Bankers Less Eager to Lend. The week in local monetary circles opened with a slim show of business In the loan department, but with good checking and depositing. There was no change in rates. Bank dealings were $2,212,098 39 and balances (493,89355. The New York Financial Chroniel remarks: "In speaking rlth a bank 'president this week about the condition or money, he said we get so small a return on loans now that It is nearly as profitable and a trifle safer to let the funds lie in bank, and some bank managers are acting in accordance with that belief. When we state, tnerefore, that money is a little firmer and that the firmer feeling Is reflected In all branches of the market, the explanation readily occurs that it is In part owing to smaller offerings or less eager lenders as well as being In part due to an Improvement in the demand, and In part also perhaps to the gold exports. Of course the gold exports decrease the reserve, but there is so much left, so mueli of new cur rency coming from the interior, and the con tinuance or the outflow otgold at tills period of the year must of necessity be so short, that the mere loss by export in the quantity of the reserve Is not a very material con sideration."
