Chicago, April 25. There was a surprise to-day In the visible supply report. The Lake figures for wheat gave, instead of an increase, a remarkable decrease or 1,138,000 bushels. On this tliero was a temporary flurry, which pnt prices up to 81o for May and July. This was met by organized sell ing by the P-irdrldire brokers, and so dis heartened the trade that the close was rather flat at but z gain for the day. Corn left ofTat a decline of c In the May future and an advance of Vic for July. Provisions wound up firm at 10c Improvement over Saturday's closing price for pork and a gain of5e each in lard and ribs. In wheat tho opening was Jc advance and tho market ruled strong, advancing an ad ditional c and eased off K- closing steady. The eaily strength was influenced by the backwardness ot tho reason being made so apparent by the various official State bulletins. The visible supply state ment remained a matter of uncertainty until late in the session and trading whilo waiting for its appearanoo was extremely light. Some operators professed to see a bullish card in a dispatch from Washington saying a census of the House showed tho Hatch bill could not pass. Pardridge, it Is cunent cossip to-night. Is short of July wheat 8,000.000 or 10 000,000 bushels. Irwin Green bought a good tfe of wheat to-day, supposed to be for Captaifl Phillips, who has heretofore been nnite n bear. In tho corn pit Norton and Worthington sold out about 500.000 hushels of long corn early in the session. Ontside of that thero was no conspicuous individual trading. Tho price was well maintained at from 42c to iijc for May, but weakened toward the end of tho session, and in the last ten minntes the sellers crowded the price down to 41Jc, and it closed at 41c Shorts and reccu ers bought oats sparing ly. O. AS. L. White led the selling, bnt most of the trade tras scattered and of a scalpinc nature. The market followed corn closely all day. It advanced e and then weakened Hc There ere signs of improved support in the provision lrnrket after the first hour. The packets for the first time in mnnv days ncre Inclined to take piodnctson May contracts. It was on some significant buying of short ribs by Armour brokers the last l-alf hour that shorts were induced to do some buying aud the best prices tero made Jut at tho cloe. Rvan & Co., Chicago Packing Company and other packing interests woro at work on tho buying side at different firms. A fair do mnnd existed for vessel room and rates held firm at lc for wheat and lc for corn to Buftalo. The leading futures ranged as follows, as cor rected by John M. How Real Estate Sales Could Increased Here if tho Be SELLEE WOULD MAKE CONCESSIONS Owners Eealize the Great Possibilities of Central Propertj. THE DRIFT OP MONEY AND SPECULATION The failure last week to sell a piece of downtown business property, because the owner refused to "split the difference," about $3,000, with the buyer, is significant as showing that owners realize the possi bilities of central property, and see no rea son for making concessions. "Whether they are right or wrong in exacting their own terms is their own business; but it is certain that more sales would be effected if buyers were humored to a reasonable extent. It cannot be denied that property-owners have a right to ask what they choose, and that they are pursuing this course must be taken as a sign of confidence on their part rather than an indication of fictitious values. If the latter were true, the bottom would soon fall out of the market Testerday's Building Record. Yesterday was a fairly good day in the building line. QUIET AND NARROW THE CONDITION OF ME MEW YORK STOCK MARKET. A General Bearish Feeling Prevailed London a moderate Seller Hocking Valley the Only Strong Point A Tumble In Missouri Pacifies. New York, April 25. Tho stock market to-day was again a qniet and narrow ono with small fluctuations oven among the leading stocks, and while thero was a gen oral bearish feeling in the room. Northern Paclflo preferred was the only really weak point in tho list. To-day London was a moderato seller, and afterward reversed this position on the market. There was con siderable trading in Reading, Atchison and St. Paul, but tho short interest in those stocks is known to have been largely in creased of late, and the stiffne.-s of tho prices of those shares may have been owing to some covering. The only really strong spot in the list was Hocking Valley, both the common and pre ferred rising over 1 per cent on light trans actions, and these gains are based on the improved prospectsof theenmpany entirely. The Richmond and West Point securities woro still quieter, thnn last week, and, excent in Keadinz. there was no featuto among the coal stocks, tho late rumors hav ing no foundation and few believers. The opening was in all cases lower, with excep tional losses extending to percent. The Jiressnre upon Northern Pacific preferred m mediately made Itself felt, while the strength in tho Hocking Valley stocks was equally as pronounced, nut tho general list loiioweu tne nrsc named anu fractional losses were the rule. The selling, however, never reached large proportions, and prices rallied toward noon, and, while extreme dullness marked the dealings after that time, there was a slow but steady apprecia tion in values which as a rule wiped out tho eaily losses with some additional gains. Tho only features of tho late trading were the sudden rally in Lackawanna lrom 157 to 159, and the slow and steady drop In Mis souri Pacific, which finally brought it below the level ot nil other stocks, and It stands alone this evening in showing a material de cline for the day. The maikct finally closed dull but steady to firm dcSDite some realizations in the last hour, but the final charges aie in all cases immatertil, except in Missouri Pacific, which is down lj-jj per cent. Railroad bonds wero devoid of feature, and a selling movement in the Atchison incomes furnished the only item of interest in the day's operations. The bonds furnished $175,000 ont of a total of $1,414,030 for the day. Prices remained without decided tendency throughout the day, and transactions were restricted to a rather small number of issues. The total sales of stock to-day were 211,916 shares, including Atchison, 17,589; Dela ware, Lackawanna and Western, 4,420: Erie, 9630; Hocking Valley, 7,325; Louisville and Nashville. 6.200: Northern Pacific preferred, 31,563; New Enirland, 8,600; Reading, 3S 600: St. Paul, 79,200; Union Pacific, 4,710; Western Union, 0,589.
