ssaMnsmeiisssKsssssEMi KfifiSIBMHMKilBBHlHBBI 6 THE PTTTSBTJRQ- DISPATCH, FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 1892. BOUND TO BE A FIGHT. XBW ADVERTISEMENTS. NEW ADVERTISEMENT. NE1T ADVET1SEMKTTS. WE ARE OFFERING .Allegheny Presbytery May Convict Ecy. Joseph Baussman of 3 THE BEST PREACHIKG HERETICAL DOCTRINE. M0QUETTE CARPETS KAUF M lie Case Will Then Be Appealed General Assembly. to the JIIS FEIEXDS WILL RALLY AR0DXD HIM On Tuesday, April 12, the Allegheny Presbytery ot the Presbyterian Church, will meet at Beaver, Pa., and the session prom ises to be one of the liveliest ever held by that body. The case of Key. Joseph Bauss jnan trill be disposed of and the organiza tion will it is expected divide itself in an intellectual discussion of heresy and its symptoms. Key. Joseph Banssman is pastor of the " Presbyterian Church, of Eochester, Pa. He is a young man of recognized ability and is charged with entertaining at least advanced ideas in religious matters. He is the son of Editor Baussman, formerly of "Washington, Pa., and his congregation has teen, to an extent, divided on his views ever since the famous Briggs trial attracted the attention of the Church and the people over a Tear ago. At that time Rev. Bauss man w as charged by some of the orthodox jnembers of the congregation with holding Briggs' views and preaching the Xew York man's principles. His congregation gave liim a trial, but before a verdict was re turned the case was referred to a commit tee. The committee was headed by the Rev. John Fox, D. D., pastor of the North Presby terian Church, Allegheny. This committee determined to review Rev. Mr. Baussman's work, which it is alleged they have been doing rigidly ever since tneir appointment. tThev will report their finding to the Pres liytery at its Beaver meeting, and Rev. Sir. Baussman is confident that the report will be against him. The members of the In vestigating Committee refuse to say what their investigation developed or what their report would contain. It has rtached Rev. 3Ir. Baussman, however, that the report vill be against him, which, if adopted, will relieve the minister of his charge. "The report, if it really is against Bauss man, will not be adopted by the Presby tery without a lively fight," said a member cf the Presbytery yesterday, "and even if it is adopted tlie case will be carried up to the General Assembly. In this case it will attract as much attention as did the famous Brigtrs case. In the anticipated fight I am Jiow confident the people who are opposing the Rochester minister and who will Le led by Dr. Fox will have an easy majority in the Presbytery, but the other side will have several able and elo quent advocates who will fight to a finish,as they say in sporting parlance. "The gravest cLarge against Rev. Bauss man is his sympathy with Briggs, and a canvass of the members of the Presbytery Vould prove that he is not alone in that po sition, as many of the young ministers are with him and all of such will be expected to come to his delense at the approaching Learing." The trouble in Rev. Baussman's church lias been attracting more or less attention for a year, and the indications are that it v ill attract much more attention for some time to come.
