BHEEP ETBiDI AND SWINE WEAKER Office or The Dispatch, Pittsburg, Wednesday, March 30. The receipts of cattle at tbe East Liberty yards were less this week than last by about ten carloads. The total for the week so far lias been about GO carloads. "While there were a few loads in this week's oflerings better in quality than have been on sale at these yards for some weeks past, the gen eral average showed little or no improve ment Two loads ot good Ohio beeves, weighing about 1,600 lbs, were sold at 4 75. This was the top of market. Tidy butcher beeves of light weight sold at 5 to 10c bet terprices than were obtained for the same grade a week ago. This morning the yards were as bare of cattle as they have been for months past. Fresh cows were in fair supply and de mand, and veal calves were abundant and lower than at any time this season. Monday's offerings of hogs were large and markets were dull at a slight decline from last week's range. Since Monday re ceipts l;ave been light, but markets have failed to improve. This morning there was not a load on sale. Sheep were in light supply all the week, and were sold at strong last week's prices. Top price for sheep was 'G 40 and Jambs 7 25. It Displays Buoyant Strength at First, but Soon Backs Water The Premlnm on July Goes Down Corn and Oats Follow the Ijeader Provisions Weak. CHICAGO Wheat made heroic efforts to sit up to-day. Its strength proved hardly sufficient for the effort. There seemed to bo a good many buying orders at the start, and for a time there was a considerable display ot visor. Mav opened briskly KJb higher at SOc, but the advance brought out tree oirerings. Tho tone soon changed to one of weakness, and before 11 o'clock the price went off .to 79Ji60c. By noon tho mar ket sold off to 79c Weakness continued to role during the closing hour, and May spar Insly sold as low as 79c. and left off easy at 79Jc. A now feature was the decline In .the pre mium on July. The pressure to sell that montli was great from the Southwest on flno crop prospects, and It fell from llKc over May to only He over. It was also discovered that a number of houses ieie buying May but selling au equal nmouiit of July. Corn trading. In its cour-e, was almost a duDlicate of the wheat market. It started at an advance for May of aboutcand made tho best prices for tne day In the flrst few minutes of the session. Some of the car ties who were supposed to be the heaviest holders were sellers on the opening bulge. Considerable oxcitement prevailed In oats at the opening, the market being very flrra as a result or similar conditions In the wheat and corn pits and the fact that tho receipts were lighter than expected. Hog products wore the weak thing on the list. Closing prices were neaily the lowest. May closed at $10 17. compared with $10 37 yesterday: May lard at $6 29. aeainst $8 30, and ribs $5 57j, compared with $5 70 yester day. The leading ftitnres ronged as follows as corrected br John M. Unsettled and Still Pro fessional Sharp Drives on the Coalers A Boom In Manhattan Just Before the Close Railroad Bonds Active. Nxw York, Marlli 30. The operations in the stock marked to-day showed proof that there are two parties In the speculation, and that they are at present quite evenly di vided. Under Mil Influences of these con tending forces thl market was, during most of the day, feverish and unsettled; but the bulls had the aid pf free covering of yester day's shorts, and prices", as n rule, were well maintained. The professional nature of tho market, however, was again demonstrated by tho uttor stagnation which followed the completion of tho ventures entered into ves tciday, accompanied by almost entire cessa tion of tradlnz. Northern Pacific was more animated than usual of late.M hlle, despite tbe attacks upon it, there was demand enough from tho shorts to keep it moving upward after tho opening decllno of per cent. Sharp and short drives were made at tho Coalers, and all except Heading Yielded materially 'on light trading, Lackawanna, Jersey Central andDelawaie and Hudson reaching lower prices than have been seen for some time; but tho recovery was equally If not moro rapid than the drop, nnd intense dullness marked the further dealings in those shares. In the rally that followed the drive Reading received a substantial sain in company with a few other stocks which have of lato been the objects of special bear pressure. , Tho Grangers were given more promi nence to-day, and-St. Paul again assumed its place as leader of tho market in point of activity, and in it, as in the otner prominent shares, the efforts at depression wero fol lowed by a full recovery and gains of small fractions In addition. The Industrials weie comparatively neglected, and the low-priced shares were barren of feature. The opening of the general list was made at fractionally lower figures than thoso of last evening, but the covering of shorts was on so large a scale that prices rose from the first sales. Tbe continued sales for tho short account, however, aided by some liquidation of long accounts, kept the mar ket throughout the forenoon in a highly feverish and unsettled state, though pricos advanced in the main. The afternoon was marked by a further improvement, though the business done decreased to the smallest limit at one time, while in Reading, the Coalers, Sugnr and some others material gains w ere scored on aveiy moderate trad ing. There wns no sot-back, and the market finally closed quiet to dull but firm, gener ally at about the best prices of the day. One of the most prominent features of the late trading was a sharp upwaid movement in Manhattan, which, after selling down 1 tollSK. Tose rapidly to 119 and closed with a reaction of only per cent. The final changes are almost Invariably small gains. but Manhattan is up 2: Burlington, 1, una Delaware and Hudson, 1 per cent. The total sales of stocks to-dav were 280.284 shares, including Atchison, 21.453; Erie, '-8 245; Louisville and Nashville, 6,230: Missouri Pa cific, 10,420; Northwestern, 3,840; North Pn ciflc pretei red, 20,268: New England, 13,975; Beading, 25,600: Richmond and West Point, 13,145; St. Paul, 35,000. Sales of bonds wero more active, and trad ing extended to a still larger number of is sues, while the feature of the dealings was the return of the Atchison incomes to popu larity. Richmond and West Point 6's retired, but no other material changes In tho promi nent issues occurred. The market was in the main firm throughout.
