A TFONDERFCI. rCKXACE THAT IS CHEATING A REVOLUTION IN THE SMOKE-PKE- YENTING LINE. Now In Operation In This City Tiro Boil ers Fired Hard "With Coal All Day nnd Xo Jmnko Emitted From the Stack A Saving or Thirty-Three Per Cent In Fuel Mads Upon an Evaporative Test A Simple, Effective and Most Success ful Device That the sniolce problem has been com pletely solved no longer admits of doubt This fact is being daily demonstrated in this city upon the powerful boilers of"Wey man Bros.' tobacco factory, between Sixth and Seventh streets. This wonderful furnaee, known as the Mc Kenzie Economic Smokeless Furnace, is the invention of Doujrlass J. McKenzie, a well-known engineer of the Northwest. For years Jlr. McKenzie studied and experi mented on the problem of constructing a furnace that would not make smoke, but would still do as much work as other fur naces that had been apparently constructed with a view of making as much smoke as possible. He at last succeeded, and placed the first furnace upon the plant of W. S. & T. B. "Williamson, of Madison street, Chi caso, six months aso. The results were wonderful. At Gage Bros.', AVabash ave nue, the next furnace was built, and a tho.-oueh fuel test made, showing that in September and October last, without the furnace in operation, 151,005 pounds of coal were consumed, and in November and December following, with the furnace in use, 101,045 pounds of coal were burnt a saving of 49,360 pounds, or 33 per cent, made by this furnace. Had the weather been equal during the entire four months, and the demands upon the furnace for luel the same, the result would have been even more favorable. It has recently been put upon tha. Owings building, Dearborn and Adams street; Mr. J. Tierney & Co., 14 North Canal street; Ycrkes Northwest Cable Road power house, and numerous other places in Chicago. The first furnaces built outside of Chicago arethcto now in operation at Weyman liroi.' and one in course of erection for Hrtus & Hacke, under the supervision of C F. Jahn, who is the General Mauager ot the McKenzie Company in the East Speaking of the furnace yesterday, Mr. Jahn aid: "The principle upon which the McKenzie furnace is built is the one upon which smoke I experts and inventors nave been working for ccnturic, but they seem to have left it lor Mr. M"K"nzie to attain the results aimed at. It is done in this way: "The coal is thrown into the front of the lurnaec. the end of an arch marking how lar in the fireman is to throw it There It be comes coked, and the fumes and 6moke pass into an arch, the space beyond which is kept full of the coal already coked. The heat rithin this arch is inttne. It requires a heat of 1,(509 to consume the smoke and paes, but this furnace has a temperature under the second a ch of L',2000. The heat, when it readies the boilers, is etenly dis tributed all along the under furnace. 'Since the furnace has been in operation at "Weyman's a great many engineers and ethers have examined it with amazement. Among the callers the other day were the ladies of the Health Protective Association. They wore delighted with the furnace, and coiwlorahly encouraged in their eflort to abtii-h the smoke nuisance "Of the SO different devices in use in Chi cs; onlv about 8 per cent of which are in ywy succeful in presenting smoke the McKenzie has been declared to be in the lesu. Mavor "Wasliburce, CommUsioners Aldrich and "Ware and Smoke Inspector fore are rll firnilv convinced, after person al investigation, that the McKenzie furnace will burn soft coal without smoke; in short that pcrlect combustion is secured bv this Jthj of boiler petting. The Citizens' Kmkc Committee made a test of the Mc IvTzieat the Oaings building last week Irran 2 until 5:"0 r. 3i., durinc which time not mic particle of :noke emitted from the Mark, and the steam gauge remained at eiehtv-flve (So) pounds. Their unofficial report is thai the McKenzie leads them all. Tin official report is not vet made. "I guarantee the McKenzie is the only t-niircly smokeless furnace in existence; tliaf it will save 15 to 30 per cent in fuel; that it is simple in construction and dura ble, that anv person can operate it success lullx, without reference to former experi ertT a, a stoker; that it can be put under anv boiler, new or old, and will not injure the hi.ilers or settings. ""We will put the furnace in any plant at our own expense, guaranteeing to accom plish all the above claims before it need be paid for, and if it Jails to do it we will re move it and replace the boilers and settings we found them, at our. own expense. Oar office is 5CT Penn Building until the 20th ii:rt., after which it will be located in room 413, Ferguson Building." fMOKE IS A WASTE. A Can Bo Seen !y- Kerdins the Tollowinp: At the West Pcnn Hospital Mr. Cowan says ae are saving 50 per cent of coal. At the Petina. Co.'s offices, Penn and Tenth rtreet, thev sav we are saving 10 per cent of coal and getting 2j to 30 per cent more Fiearn. Mr. Davis, of the Fifth Avenue Traction Co., at Oakland, says the saving is larceand i" per cent oi the smoke stopped. The de vice ra not put in until he visited Chicago and other cities to look for the best, which he lound here at home. The Spans Steel & Iron Co. are getting33 per cent more steam without any additional luel, aud stop 90 per cent of the" smoke. Tv.o scientific tests made recently both ihowcd an evaporation of over 11 pounds. The above results were obtained by the use ol the Walker Smokeless Furnace, office 317 .Lewis block, citv. rroin Omaha. Omaha, Neb., May 5, 189L I have suffered lor years with neuralgic headache, and XrauseV Headache Capsules is the only remedy that has done me any poed.
