Various Opinions Regarding the Famous Keed Farm Well. GORDON, FOURTH OR FIFTH SAND Is the Question "rou'oh-c h Operators in the Southwest. ADVANCED GORDON WELLS SHOWING The Reed farm well, three miles south west of McDonald oa a 22 line, is still a question for dispute and discussion amonj; operators. "Whene er a group of oil men nil? iormed yesterday nothing else was talked about As a general thing the state ment of the owners, who agree in the one particular, that it is in the fifth saud, is disbelieved. The owners, lion over, disagree as to its capacity. A-talclie!,terdayiii The Dispatch, they estimate It as sure to produce anywhere from 25 to 200 barrels a day. 1 bey are about ojjually divided as to whether it will make 2for 200. It is cencrally ktiown that there a're several extraordinary clauses In the aeao which part of the owners evidently i-ieh to Ret around, and consequently they Inae been "iiionkcyinji" with the well, to tic a popular oil country expression. I One of the old timers, nnd among the fVarliet pioneers in the business, said last i-vcning: "I visited the well to-day and J lound a dark -rrecn oil, which I am positive I coim-. from the third or Gordon sand. It is not fifth sand oil by anv means. My opinion is that thev rot the salt water, which they had to cae off. in the 30-foot, and that this oil i rrom the Gordon sand, which ther could eailv drill to in less than 43 hours from theSO-foot-"' Another operator Just as ex perienced as the first said: "The oil is muddy, and I believe it comes trom the Mray above the Gordon. The sand is not a pure Mnd, but a kind of mixture, the same as lound in the stray above the Gordon in Guffey, Jennings & Co.'s Xos. 1 and I Matthews. The same kind of oil was also lound in these wells in the stray above the Gordon. The alt water w as no doubt found in one of the upper kands." 2,400 Feet or Casinc. The owners or the well state thai it is 2,463 Teet deep, and that they put in 2,400 feet of casing to shut off the salt water. The man who has charge of the Royal Gas Company's ell, on the lloore farm, at Venice, has a decidedly different view of the matter, lie said: "Tho oil in the Keed well must bo from the rourth sand. The Venice well is considerably higher than the former, and we did not go much over 2,400 feet. We got scarcely anv nTth sand, and 1 believe that the oil which they are now getting in the Heed w ell comes from the fourth." In the good old days when the market was on the jump and trading lively, the present uncertainty- in regard to tho well would have soon'been dispclled,if left in its present unguarded condition at night. Only a brace f loaded shotgun- in the hands of determ ined men would have kept tlit daring scouts Jnrai running a measuring line and getting the exact depth of the hole by which the oil-nroducing sand would be known. The contractor said last evening that it was through the filth sand. No Likelihood of Any Material Ad vance in Dwellin? Eents. USUAL QUIT NOTICES SENT OUT. More 'Room Urgent jr remanded to .Accom modate Business of the City. A BIG BATCH OP NEW ENTERPKISES Big batches of regular yearly quit notices to tenants were sent out yesterday by real estate agents. Being merely reminders that leases will expire April 1, they possess no special significance. There will no doubt he the average amount of flitting, with the visual rush for small houses. As to rents, there is little likelihood that they will he materially advanced, except for choice busi ness properties. The large number of new dwellings erected during the year and under way, to be completed by April, is calculated'to check any tendency to put up rents for family quarters much beyond the present limit. Dr. G. E. "Wetherton, of Erie, Pa., has' leased, through Black &Baird, for a term of five years, the store room over the A. L. Sailor Clothing Company, corner Sixth and Liberty streets. More Room for Business. It requires no argument to demonstrate that business must have more room. This is sufficiently attested by the scarcity of stores and warehouses for rent. Belief is promised in the Point district, but it will be several years before the efTeet will be felt A quicker way would be to tear down a few hundred of the antiquated structures which disfigure nearly all of the principal streets and replace them with modern buildings. Liberty street offers a fine field for work of this kind,, and so do Second and Third avenues. These locali ties being in the very heart of the city, there would be no difficulty in finding buy ers or tenants for almost any number of good business stands. The general confi dence in the future of the citjr is sufficient to justify the investment. New Enterprises Started. A Few Quite Heavy Declines, bnt the Ma jority of Losses Are Fractional Mis souri Pacific Rallies the Share Market for a Short Time. , New York, Dec. 29. The stock market to day, for the first time in many days, showed a real reactionary temper, and while there were evidences of support and the demand from commission bouses continued heavy, the realizations of profits by those who de sire to close tip everything with the year added to the efforts of the bears and forced small concessions in almost everything traded in, while a few of the leading shares made material declines from last night's prices. The movement began in London. The strength displayed in special stocks was still ono of the features ot the market, and in the face of the general. weakness Omaha common was forced upover3pcr cent in the afternoon, nnd, while not clos ing at the best figures, scored a marked gain for the day. The opening was tame and lower, and the early trading saw furtner concessions all along the line, but the strength in "Missouri Pacific rallied the market, and prices were brought above those of tho opening, the movement being helped by special 'strengtli-in Distllleis' and Consolidated Gas. The attack on the coal ers, however, dropped Jersey Central from $1 13tol 10 and the others followed, both the Goulds and other leading shares giving way with readiness. The downward move ment was not checked till the last hour. The pressure was resumed in final de ilings, nnd tho market closed active and heavy. BEST HOLIDAY TRADE ON RECORD REPORTED HERE. Jewelers Well Satisfied Low Priced Musi cal Instruments in Active Demand A Heavy Express Business an Indication of Lively Trade. Office of The Dispatch, ) PiTTsnimo, Tuesday, Dec. 29. 5 Dealers in all kinds of holiday goods are very happy over the results of last week's trade. Those results fully atoned for the quietness for mouths before. Said a lead ing dealer in notions and toys: "I am fully satisfied with the results of Christmas week. My sales were fully 20 per cent larger than for the corresponding week of last year and this means that the past week was the best on record. Xever before have we had so small an amount of stock on hand after Christmas as now. We laid in larger sup plies than over before, but found quick sale for nearly all the goods we had on hand. I estimate that not less than $100,000 worth of toys were sold by Pittsburg dealers last week. About three-fourths of this amount was sold by toy dealers, and the other fourth by drygoods and other firms who tacked on toys to their regular trade. On Christmas Eve after 11 o'clock wo delivered about 300 packages to "East tnd and Allegheny homes." Mmdcal Instruments. Christmas week of 1S91 was one of the best on record as regards volume of sales in this line. Upright pianos have the lead, and not less than 100 were sold by Pittsburg firms in the month of December, tho average price of which was above $300. Organs averaging $100 each were sold to double this amount. Guitars, mandolins and banjos are in very active demand. High-priced musical instru ments are not so much in demand as they have been in times past. High-priced music boxes havo been so much in demand tho past year or two that there is now a reac tion, and demand is light in this line this season. Tho trade is overworked in the lino of high-priced goods, nnd we aie now in the midst of tho reaction. Cheap editions of music books are very active of late. A Big Express Trade. Campbell and Davis, the East End ex pressmen, report that their trade for Christ mas week oxceeded anything in the past. They had 23 wagons on the road delivering Christmas goods on Thursday, and no homes were disappointed at not receiving goods for Santa Clans purposes. A single firm had 300 packages dcliveredby this company after midnight on Thursday night. There was no rest for expressmen or tov dealers on the night before Christmas.. Said a member of the above firm: "I have never seen the time when Christmas trade was as lively as it was this year. Wo are not able to discover any symptoms of hard times or tight money. If Christmas presents aro any indication of prosperity, certainly we are now in the midst of a prosperous season." In Jewelry Line. Christmas proved a great help to dealers in this line. One of our leading jewelers re ports voliime of the ti ade for tho past week as $5,000 better than for the corresponding week last year. Withal the talk of tight money nnd slow trade, somehow there has been found enough to furnish the diamonds, and silver nnd golden ornaments which go to adorn brides and best girls. The movement of dairy products has been slow of late. Country butter is a drug on the market, and only the best finds ready sale. Fresh egzs are in larger supply than they have been for a month or two past. The mild weather of the past week or two has encouraged hens to return to their regu lar calling, and the result Is seen in larger supplies aud lower prices.
