av v s aw; THE PITTSBUKG DISPATCH FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11, 189L -HELD' FOR A CENTURY. The Rjers Family Hasn't Lost an Acre of Its Grant in 100 Years. OLD FAMILY RECORDS DISCOVERED. Quaint Papers That Shed Light on the County's Early History. TAXES WERE INGHEB TITEX THAN NOW . A. Z. Byers, real estate broker, -who waB appointed executor of the estate of his uncle, Jonathan Dyers, who was buried at Imperial, this county, on the 3d inst , went up to Imperial the other day to investigate his uncle's aftairs, and in an ancient bag, composed of linsey-woolsey, came across a large number of papers once belonging to the original Allegheny county ancestor of most of the Byers of th'is section, John Byers, and they are redolent of antiquity. Miss Betsy Byers says the old bag has not to her certain knowledge been opened pre viously during the last half century. .One of the firt documents that attracted attention, is a patent giving to John Byers, great-grandfather of A. Z. Byers, 406 acres of land on Montour run, signed by Thomas Mifflin, Governor, and James Trimble, Sec retary of St ate, and what is somewhat anom alous in Ibis part of the world, is the fact that all of this land is still in the possession of John Byers' descendants. Some of the papers made about that time spell the name 'Buyers." The tract was called "Fred rica," and the patent is signed April 14, 1797. One-sixth of all gold and silver found was reserved to the Commonwealth of Penn sylvania, to bo delivered at the pit mouthr but coal, oil and gas were not reserved. A receipt shows that John paid 2 for survey ing the tract to, Samuel Lyon. On June 24, 179G, I. Steinert acknowledged the receipt of deed tor the same property for record, from "William Dunning. The land is in Finley township. Exorbitant Taxes In8I4. Tiie next interesting feature connected with the property is that in 1814 the whole tract W.V- valued by the assessor at 51,060, a little over ?2 50 per acre, and the grand father of A. V. Byers was notified by As setsc r John Stevenon, grandfather of Mrs. A. Z. livers, that the rnillage was 3J and the tax 53 7L The millage was then higher than now, but the tax was only about one fortieth of what It is now. The o'det paper found w as one relating to Margery Dunning, dated 1792, before she married John Byers. It gave her a r;ood send-oft among the orthodox of Allegheny and reads as follows: Theso are to certify that Margery Dunn ing, now the wife of John Buye'rs, was a regular member of the First Presbyterinii Church In Carlisle, under the pastoral caio of the Rev. John steel, and is free from scandal, or church censure known to me and may be admitted to the privileges in anv Rocietv where God may cast her lot. MaV29, 1732. Georoe Davidsoit, Elder. A promissory note, dated 1832, shows the evanescent character of 1'ittsburg manu facturing establishments generally in times past. Samiiel Byers, grandfather of A. Z. Byers, got a fanning mill from Messick, Thomson & Green and gae his note at three months for 520 withoiit interest. The note states thaf'tlieabovcobligationisgiven fora fanning mill warranted to be good and to do good business; if not good, signer has privilege to return." There wai no swiodle in that offer. This is only o9 years ago, but who can recollect Messick, Thomson & Green? Not an -Aero Sold In a Century. The Byers familv seem to have always since they left Carlisle been well satisfied with this section, as ther have not straved away like most other people, and the bulk of their descendants would not have far to travel to attend a family reunion. A. M. Byers, the iron manufacturer, is of the strain. They are long livers, the father of A. Z. Byers dying, the youngest of his family, at fiS years. Of his brothers and sisters, John " Byers, dentist, lives at Imperial, hale and hearty, aged 85 and still attending to business as of yore. lie was a clerk in the first Court House of this county, the one that stood near the Diamond Market He was also a famous school teacher in his time, and was one of the men who birched If. TV, Shafer, Esq., when his young idea was being taucht how to shooC Margary Stewart, a sister, is 78 years old and lives in the State of Indiana. BetsvByers never married, but lived with Jonathan, who also remained sinrle, and who was buried last week. "W. II Byers feels quite youthful at 71. Jonathan arid liih sister Betsv, cousins of John D. Byers and his sister Teggy, all unmarried, have lived all their long lives separated by but a single field, and, though often divided and subdivided, the original 406-acre tract on Montour run is still all held in the Bvers name. FEIGHED DEATH AKD DISS. Sad Story of an Opossum nnd a Railway Train Near This City. Every backwoods naturalist is familiarly acquainted with the habiti of the opossuni, especially that faculty it has of feigning death when menaced by enemies. Some hold that within certain limits Instinct is of more importance, or use, than reason, but an opossum yesterday proved that instinct does not expand sufficiently to meet the ex igencies of homogeneous heterogeneity, which is styled modern progress. The marsupial ventured out to see if the late freezing had sufficiently mellowed the pawpaw and persimmon to make them digestible, and while crawling . over the Montour Railway, near thrj Middletown road, heard a train approach. He was just half-way across the rail, when the instinct to feign death took possession, and he died. The locomotive passed over him, and "carved dat 'possum" in a style that would have made an African's flews water with disappointment In time opossums may learn to adapt themselves to changed condi tions, if meantime they do not become ex tinct HORSFORD'SCID PHOSPHATE Imparts Renewed Strength and vigor where there has been exhaustion. . flanta Clans' Visit "Won't be complete unless he leaves some of Marvin's nick-nacks, animal cakes, Christ mas toys and cocoa bon-bon macaroons for the little folks.
