v?sq ; f THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH. SATURDAT, OCTOBER 10, 189L ,JV. . rf.v-r MffiEBS GET EXCITED Oyer a Eeport From a Goal Operator Thai Forty Miners Are WOKKIXG AT THE OLD KATES. yew Piano and Organ Factory to Ee Built at Kensington. MISCELLANEOUS IXDUSTBIAL ITEMS Considerable excitement was stirred up last evening when the announcement was made that about 40 out of 72 mines in the Pittsburg district were at woricat the old rates. Tliis information was given out by "V. A. Mack, Secretary of the Chartiers "Valley Goal Company. The list furnished by him follows: Panhandle Uailroad Midway, Black Dia mond, Primrose, Jumbo, Willow Grove, Allison and W. P. Rend & Co.'s Miller's Run mines; Baltimore and Ohio Eureka. "VVa erl$ Port Royal and Scott's Ocean mines; Pittsburg, McKeesport and Youghiosncny Darr, Ronnins and Whltsett mines; Pitts burg, Virginia and Charleston Acme, Alien, Redstone, Sniook and Lynn mines: Pennsyl vania Railroad the New Tork and Cleve land Gas Coal Company, lour mines; the Penn Gas Coal Company, seven mines; 'West moreland Coal Company, four mines; Hamp ton. Duquesne, PprinRhill, F. L. Stevenson and Ullery A Co."s mines. . rTKTHEK CLAIMS BY OPERATORS. !Mr. Ulack continued his information to the effect that the mines working are run ning coal only to yards and local trade. 2Jo coal is being mined for the foreign trade ex cept at the old rates. Mr. Black also de nies that the New York and Cleveland Com pany's mines are working at the advance, and says that all the mines mentioned above are in operation at the old rates. When this information was given out it spread like wildfire throughout the mining district. The men along the lines of rail way affected- by the strike hustled around the mines to learn what truth there was in the statement. Tresident Costello started on a personal investigation and before 10 o'clock last night he had reports in from his subordinates in every direction. The man ner in which the report had been given out and the confidence expressed by the operators indicated that they thought the strike was broken and that in a few days they could claim a victory over the men. Mr. Costello expressed himself very differently. After hearing fiom the districts, he said: "Why, I can say that the miners arc not working at the Black Diamond mines. A few men may be in the Jumbo mines, but they are not" or?ani7ed. At Scott's Ocean mines there arc 12 Hungarians and I am very sure that no great number are at work along the Baltimore and Ohio, and those who are en duty are imported. NOT ALL IX THIS DISTRICT. "Besides all the mines mentioned in Mr. Black's lUt abors West Xcvrton are not in the Pittsburg district The mines lie mentions on the Pittsburg, McKeesport and Youghiogheny road are in the Connells ville region, and have no right to be taken into consideration in the local strike. There may be a few men at work along the Pittsburg, Virginia and Charleston, but the mines are not in anything like practical operation. As for the seven mines of the Penn Ga. Coal Company, they are not in this district, and I believe we have an agree ment that will show how the New York and Cleveland Gas Coal Company is work ing. "I want to say in a general way that this is the most complete cessation of" work that ever occurred in Pittsburg. There have always been in the outlying portions of our district a small number of miners whose operators would never concede any price until it was established ty the major portion of the district In nearly nil of those outlying mines the coal is of an inferior nature, hence they Bare seldom ever had the district price. If they ever paid it it was only when the regular district price was so low that the miners would refuse to work, finding better remuneration cKewhere." The developments will be watched for in the future with great interest. A VEEY STUBBOEK TIGHT. The Printers' Strike Nnrroviinc; Down to One or Endurance. The printers' fight still grows more stub bom. Yesterday a new lot of men arrived and the printers, as nnal, succeeded in converting a few of them over to their ranks. The fight has now narrowed down lo one of endurance and the opposing force's are under the direct leadership of Secretary Ivnapp, of the Typothetie, and President Prcscott, of the International Typographi cal Union. ' Percy Smith said yesterday that the em ploying printers w ere in very much better riiape than they had been at any time since October L Secretary Knapp says the Pitts burg employers are doing- better than did thnse of Chicago, and they won. The union printers, however, are keeping up spirits, taking encouragement from their claimed successful attempts to get the men brought here to leave the city nearly as fast as they came.
