V,-- THB'' PITTSBURG-' DISPATCH, WEDNESDAY, MAT IS, 1891 3 7?'. ENEMIES OF BLACK SMOKE. 33)6 Women's Health Protective Associa tion Taking Active Steps to llrlng Smoke Consumers Into Use Test Case to Bo Brought Soon. The agitation of the smoke question Is be coming more prominent every day. Sani tarian, city officials, business men and man ufacturers arc having the subject kept con tinually in their mind, and now the women have "taken op the war cry against tho smoke. At the last meeting of the Women's Health Infective Association the following report was made by a committee appointed to in vestigate the matter of smoke consumers: .The smoke consumer la use at Bcymer, Bauman. dr Co.'s lead works Is one manufactured by the Brighton Stoker Company, of Cleveland, O. It consumes 90 per cent of the smoke. The cheapest grades of coal can be used, and even the waste tan ark can be burned to advantage, thus saving the expense of having It hanled away. The, boilers must be cleaned once a month. Instead of every 60 days, as formerly. In order to secure the best re snlu. Counting the saving In fuel and In manual labor, the total cost of the consumer can be saved In three ear. The lleaant Vallev Hallway Company's three toilers of 1,300 horse power are equipped with the ltoney patent automatic stokers, which are entirely smokeless. The coal burned under the boilers Is of the lowest grade, stmplv coal dust or slack. The combustion Is so perfect that no smoke can at any time be seen Issuing from the stacks or chimneys: consequently the saving in fuel amounts to at least 13 per cent which In time will pay the cost of the stokers. Tho cnmpanv estimates that the use of these stokers will save them over S3, 030 a ear. As toe original cot was S3,000. they will have been paid for in two ears merely bvthe saving In fuel sad lajjor. Sins. Hkkbebt Do Pur, JIBS. CI1AIU.ES IA'OX. Committee. The association is soliciting subscriptions for a fund to be used In making a test case Ofuinst some of the, manufacturers not using consumers. There has been considerable complaint among Oakland citizens recently about the croat clouds of black smoke coming from the power houso of the Pittsburg Traction Company. It is understood the company is contemplating putting In a $3,000 consumer. The Ladles Delighted. The pleasant effect and the perfect safety vith which ladies may uso the liquid fruit laxative.
