Twenty-Eizht Sites That Most Be spected Within Five Days. In- EAl'ID TRANSIT NEEDED BY THE BOAED "Farms at reduced rates. All our mag nificent stock of summer and holiday farms at less tbau cost, to make room for spring stock." Such was the bargain-counter sentiment of the bids ior Poor farm sites opened yes terday by the Department of Awards at its second attempt to find a resting place for the city's wards. Several of the farms offered last summer were presented again, but at marked-down prices. One is re duced from SSOO an acre to 5400, another from SSOO to $155, and still another has dropped $150 an acre from the July quota tion. The ordinance requires that the Depart ment of Awards shall visit each of the sites offered, and within five days make a report of its selection to Councils. The Pleasant Valley Electric Eatlroad Company yesterday drove a silver spike into the Pittsburg end of the Ninth or Hand street bridge, in honor of its completion. It fastened the last loose board. During the day the spike, which was six inches lone, was suspended by red, Trhite and blue rib bons in the window of the toll-house, and was an object of much interest to those who dropped their pennies in front of the toll-taker. He Lad to explain to nearly every one jost wnat it uiuant. It was shortlv after 3 o'clock when President D. F.Henry put the spike into the. hole pre pared for it, and druve it home. He remarked that anv of the by-slanders who coula pull up tl-e spike with their teeth conld keep it. In an aside he said that it wa "only silver plated." Secretary Graham was the only other official of the company present and owing to the rain the spectators were few in number. 1 he record in building this bridze is a re mirkable one in more than one respect. Many difficulties were encountered, the contract call ing for its emulation last ARril. Work was begun in September 1SS9. by tho Iron City Bridge Company, but the company failed, and the piovisions of the contract were carried out by the Oliver Ii on Company, one of the creditors. Duriug last winter tbero were numerous floods and much floating ice, so that the falsework was frequently cUuiaced. An other leature aboutits construction is the fact that not a person has been seriously hurt dur ing the progress ot the work, aud travel over it was only interruiited for one day. The bridge has three spans of 205 feet each, and two spans of 155 feet each. Its total width is 53 feet, the roadway being 31 feet and the sidewalks on cither side 10 feet. There aro four tracks, two for electric rapid transit anu two for teams. The latter tw o have been wired so that they can bo used by the cars in case of accident. The sidewalks contain an excellent feature in being made of open block work, so that water will run off without difficulty. The total cost of the structure was 500,000. STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT.
