'A Big Score Caused by the Dumping or a Great Quantity of -Wheat at Chicago Despite That the Trices Walk Away Up. CHICAGO There was an enormous lot of long wheat dumped upon the board during the, first 15 minutes' operations which created a genuine widespread scare among the shorts by the heavy offerings, and in spite of them car ried the prices upward from a round 97c and 8Kc to 97Jc. There was a lively turn for mas tery at 97Jc, but that being overcome the additional o was put on without much trouble. The principal fluctuations between the time referred to and 12 o'clock were a downward reaction to 97c. and advanced to 97Kc. another slight decline to 97c a grad ual advance to 97c, quick bulge to 97c fol lowed by a rapid decline to 97Kc The attitudo of Partridge toward the nnrket was expected to exercise considerable influence on account of bis supposed hearty support, McCormick & Co. were heavy buyers, many of them coming, it was reported, from Kaufman, of Ht. Louis. Schwartz A Dnpee were heavy buyers; so also were S. V. White Ca. Logan 4 Co., Dun ham, F. H. Brown, and in fact all the commis sion houses, and the scalpers goaded tho already excited bears by wildly bidding sixteenths over them wben they showed any more than the usual eager ness In covering their shorts. There was a de cline about 12:15 P. M. to 96X and the prices and trading halted for a lew minutes at 96Jic, but attempted speculating of a few buying orders caused the pneos to jump to 97iC in a few minutes. The corn trade was affected con siderably by the strong feeling among the operators in w heat and opened for May at an advance of c over Saturday's resting prices. The first transactions were at 2c, and a bulge immediately followed which carried it to 53c, which later was the top figure for the da v. There was a reaction to 52c and anothcrslight upturn to 52KG52c, but during the latter balf of the session heaviness was the rule, and a decline to 52c took place. The strength in wheat and corn .lad but littlo effect 011 the oats market, which wvs birely steadv. There was only a small amount of business, owing to the absence of country orders. Tho firmness in grain circles gave au unsubstantial appearance of strength to the provision market at the opening. The packers were not slow to tako the measure of how touch product such a mar ket would absorb, and piled their offerings on top of it until it bad sagged back from au ad vance of 15c in the matter of pork to a decline in the end of 5c below the level of baturdav's closing quotations. Lard made scarcely any change, and ribs, after & 5c advance, are 2c lower than at the close of the preceding week. Tne leading futures ranged as follows, as cor rected by John M. THE KEWS ASD GOSSIP OP THE CITI Joseph JIcKce, the Allegheny grocery man, has purchased the stand he has been occupying for 12 or 15 years from Captain Donlap tor $20,000. It is situated on Ohio street between Arch and West Diamond. 9 Another District Catching On. There will be busy times in the Black Eorte Hill district wben the season fairly opens. A large number of improvements have been planned, and others will follow. Mr. John Ober, a well-known owner, has prepared plans for 14 brick dwellings of a good class, which will bo put under way as soon as possible. Mr. H. H. Negley is putting finishing touches to two dwellings In the same locality. All of tho Aikeu and Sumner propertieshave been sold, and, as stated by Messrs. Straub it Morris, agents for tbe owners, will he more or less Improved by tho erection of a considerable number of houses, which will be put on tho market as fast as completed, or sooner, if the people want them. Popular Prom the Start. The multiplicity of offloe buildiugs is no less a demonstration of the business growth of Pittsburg than the demand for dwellings is of the Increase of population. There are nearly a score of these structures completed, under way, or contracted for, all ot them large and furnished with every modern appliance to in sure safety and expedition iu the transaction of business. Tbe immediate success of the first ventnre of this kind was an encouragement to capitalists, who saw at once an opportunity for overcom ing tbe high price of grouud on the principal business streets by building up instead of out. There is no city in the country where such buildings are more needed than Pittsburg, and tbe fact that they have been popular from tbe start shows that they are supplying a recog nized want. All of the buildings of this kind so far erect ed or projected are on down-town streets, but it is likely that one or two will be built in East Liberty the ccnnng spring or summer; and there Is talk of ono on Carson street. South side, not far from tbe Smitnfield street bridge. Business News and Gossip. There was more inquiry for real estate yes terday than for some time. Owners and buy ers are beginning to come together. Tbe fiuancial situation in Pittsburg is stead ily improving. This is true, also, of every other monetary center. Tbe largest of 21 mortgages on file yesterday was for Sb,00t). Tbe new schoolbouse in Wilkinsburg will be completed and ready for occupancy by next Monday week, at which timo school will "take up." Ground will be broken this week, should pleasant weather continue, for three handsome dwellings on the Braddock road, back ot Edge wood. A prominent liquor dealer is dickering for a valuable business property down town. The old story that tbeSmitbfield Street M. E. Church was in the market bobbed up again yesterday. A member of the congregation said there was no truth in it. There is a good demand for property in Brusbton since sidewalks were put down. Other communities afflicted with mud should make a note of this. The Building RecorJ. Good Trading for Monday, but Some of tho Leaders Drop Back. The week opened at the local Stock Ex change with a large volume of busiuess, total sales footing up 1,250 shares. Telegraphic com munication with the East was very unsatis factory. Electric was strong at tbe opening, but weak ened off during tbe day, and finished with the loss of a point. Philadelphia Gas. Switch and Signal and Air Brake also lost ground. Luster and Consignee mining scored fractional gaius. There were no material changes in the rest of the list. While there has been considerable improve ment In stocks within a week or ten davs, it has been of a spasmodic sort, showing that the corner has not been entirely turned. This Is a warning to go slow to avoid a reaction. KIRST SECOND TIlIItD CALL. CALL. CALL. IS A IS A IS A 1. 1. S.& M.E. 3-tS .... Ivey'iie B. ot P. 75 Maeoulc ISanL.. . . 57, . . 57? A Raid Upon the Gould and Coal Stocks Brings Them Down a Peg The Rest of the List Bclps Them Just a Little Bit. New Yobk. Jan. 26. The stock market to day, considering tbe utter collapse of tbe tele graphic system of the country, was quite active, but tbe opportunity to break tbe market was too good to be wasted by tbe advocates of lower figure, and a series of raids upon the Gould stocks and the ooal stocks brought tho prices of all of them down materially, though there was some company for them among the rest of the list- Stop orders were uncovered in some of the stocks and considerable long stock was sold. Tbe flrst break was in Missouri PaciBc, but it was sold down bv two of tbe leading room traders. Union Pacific followed witb a break of 46 per cent, and all tho leading Western stocks sj mpatbized to a limited extent. Later in tbe day Jersey Central bad a severe drop on light transactions falling away from 111 to 106, against 113 at the last previous sale last week. Lackawanna and Reading joined in tho downward movement, though tbe last named was kept ratber qniet. The professional ele ment was everywhere conspicuous in helping the market dowu, but long stock came out on the break. In tbe last hour Manhattan joined tbe weak stocks, falling 3 per cent, but with tbe rest of Hit made a material recovery in the late dealings, wben there was something of a rush to cover short stocks put earlier In tbe day at higher prices. Chicago Gas was a strong spot in the market to-day, and although it fluc tuated within comparatively narrow limits, and its final gain, was an insignificant fraction, its late weakness made it conspicuous to-day. There was a specially heavy covering in Lacka wanna. Union Pacific and Jersey Central in tbe last few minutes' trading, and the market closed firm at something better than tbe lowest prices. Tbe final changes are almost all loss? , and Jersey Central is down 6V, Manhattan 2K. Union Pacific 1, Pacific Mail li, Lackawanna 1, Reading lJi Cleveland, Columbus, Clncm natl and St. Louis ll, and Wheeling and Lake Erioeachli-,. Railroad nonds were dull, and, although dis playing a steadiness in tbe general list, wor weak In spots, and in tbe final changes of im portance there are many declines. The trading was accompanied by no feature whatever, and tbe day's buiness reached only $903,000. Inter national seconds certificates lost 3 at 72; Minne apolis and St. Louis firsts, 2 at 103, and low a 7s, 2K at 92. The -Post says: No reasons can be assigned for the lack of speculative feeling except tbe gen eral ones, first, that the situation iu Congress leaves the public mind in doubt as to whether uuwise legislation is not going to make some serious disturbances In finances; seconolv, that the new Western traffic association had not made tho impression of being a success; yet, thirdly, that the earnings uf the Western and Southwestern roads for November made an un favorable impression (1 hough it must be re membered that the panicky condition of finances in November diminished all traffic); and, fourthly, that the losses ot last j ear have crippled a good many speculators who would otherwise be active in the nnrket.
