A Week of Disaster to Cattle Dro?ers in This Section. FEW, IP ANY, CAN COME OUT EVEN Light Smooth Batcher Beeves and Feeders Bold Their Own. QUALITX OP HOGS BELOW STANDARD OrncE or The rrrrsriur.Q Dispatch, i Wednesday. November 12, 1S90. I Cattle markets opened oa Monday with 120 loads on sale, a larje proportion of which were common and low crade. The receipts ot tidy beeves, from 1,000 to 1.200 lbs, such as our market demands, were light, and on this grade prices were 10 to 13c per hundred better than last week. In the offerings were 12 to 15 loads of good, but not prime, heavy steers, weighing from 1,400 to 1,500 lbs, but there were no buyers for this grade, and those ofiered were sent on East in first hands for want of customers. Good feeders, weighing 1,000 to 1,150 lb, were scarce and held well to last week's price1!. Last week wa one ol the woist ever known, at the East Liberty yard,as receipts were folly double what our local trade demands. There were over 200 loads on sale last Monday, where as our markets call for less than 100 loads. On the heavv run prices dropped below the late ruling price on all grades of cattle, with the ex ception of choice feeders. With a decline of SD carloads this neck; markets rallied on all de sirable stock and the lost ground was recov ered. Good feeders not having suffered in last week's decline havc.been least affected by the fluctuation. Everything of off quality in the cattle line was hard to sell, and. buyers being lew, they had the field on all low grades. Drov ers must hae found poor pickings on this week's operations. At Hcrr's island supply ex ceeded demand, and heavy sacrifices were made by drovers in order to unload. A leading buyer at the latter yards said yesterday that he bought his stock fully 50c per hundred below prices of last week. Receipts of sheep and Iambs at Kast Liberty have been light this week, and choice tock, which was in a small minority, was 33c per hundred higher than a week ago. The proportion of choice sheep and lambs coming to our market of late i very small. Hogs are in supply far beyond demand, especial! low grades. There were about 50 loads on the market Mondav. and an equal number has been added since. This is fullv twice as manv as the Jate average. And not above 20 per cent of the receipts are good cornfed stock. The quality of hogs coming to our markets this season has been verv low, much lower than for many j ears. The high puce of corn and the cholera scare together have had the effect of bringing unusually large numbers of porkers to market. The farmer who hears of cholera in his vicinity rushes his hoi- at once to market, lest the dis ease mav reach them. He is all the more ready to do this when corn is scarce and high. Verv few of the hoes at East Liberty this week brought $4 10, although this price would have been paid lor the best. The range was S3 75 to 51 00 for the best offered. McCall & Co.'s Weekly Review. The Crj for Houses, Like the Yoice of the Turtle, Still Heard in the Land. BUIEKS HATE CGW'FIDEXCE IN BEALTT The cry for houses is still heard in the land. Practically there are none for rent, as the following statements show: W. A. Herron Sf, Sons: "We have a fey!, but the demand is so great that they are only a drop in the bucket," Baxter, Thompson & Co.: "We could rent 100 houses iu a week if we had them. They are getting scarcer every day." J. B. Larkin & Co.: "We have calls every day that we cannot meet. Houses cannot be had for love or money." C. H. Love, Black & Baird, James "W. Drape & Co., M. F. Hipplo fc Co., Alles & Bailey, Reed B. Coyle & Co., andothersmadesimilar reports. What are capitalists going to do about it! w The Usual Result. The author of Hudibras may have had a stock speculator in mind when he wrote: "The gun, well charged for duck or plover. Wont wide and kicked the shooter ovsr." w A Lame Conclusion. The opinion of some that the large amount of acreage being put on the market is an element of weakness in real estate is as wide of the mark as possible. It shows just the reverse. Capitalists do not invest in commodities for which there is no demand. Dead stock is as unattractive to them as to other people. Addi tional acreage means that the supply of build ing lots is inadequate to the demand. When merchants lay in large stocks of goods they ex pect large sales. It is the same with real estate investors. If the market were overstocked they would be the last persons in the world to dabble in land. That they are dealing in it shows they have confidence in the present as well as the future. Only a Family Fight. "Will the gun shoot, mother T" inquired a small boy. "It will not shoot you, if you let it alone." was the answer. This is a good illus tration of the financial situation. The Wall street flurry will hurt nobody who is not a speculator. The solid industries of the country are not Involved. As a bank officer put it yesterday: "It is a fight between the bulls and the boars, and if they both go to the devil I will say amen." m Stronger Than "Wall Street. Conditions ate not ripe for a panic Tho Wall street jamboree is so called by some, but it is not entitled to that dignity. It is merely a des perate and partly successful attempt of the rich stockholders to shake the little fellows out; and. whatever may be the outcome there, Pittsburg is safe She is not speculating. She is dealing in her own natural products, which are in demand all over the world, and is inde pendent of Wall street. Back in Their Holes. When the Wall street crowd found that they had nothing to expect from Secretary Wmdom, they at once went back to their boles and pulled the panic in with them. It thus appears that speculators can paddle their own canoe when they have to. liusiness News and Gossip. IK GOOD SHAPE. Local Monetary Afftilrs Moving Along Very Comfortably Business All Right. Nothing of a disturbing nature could be dis covered in local banking circles yesterday. A sufficient supply of money for business pur poses was reported, with the usual demand from merchants and manufacturers. The lines were drawn pretty tight against outsiders, but the regular clientage was promptly accommo dated. There was no change in the interest rate. The clearing house report showed that business had received no check, exchanges ag gregating 2.748,149 28 and balances 335.187 12. A bank officer said: "The Wall street flurry will soon run its course. It cannot hurt the business of the country. Capitalist have been withdrawing their funds from speculation for some time, and knpwing what to expect they prepared lor the worst If our people will only mind their own business, and be prudent, Pittsburg will scarcely loie a penny as a result ot the slump in stock. It is such a common incident in speculation that I am suprised people pay any attention to it." Money on call at New York yesterday was stringent, ranging from 3315 per cent, last loan 6. closed offered at 6. Prime mercantile paper, 63. N.EW York, November 1Z The stock market to-day showed a materially better feeling both In the street and on the outside, and there was a most gratifying confidence displayed that not only was the worst now over, but the improve ment would be quick and sharp. The action of the Clearing House in coining to the relief of the banks in difficulty was the means of restor ing the confidence of many, while the improve ment in the situation abroad was also a power ful factor to that end. Not only was the active stocks much higher all day long, but the in active specialties, which yesterday could not find buyers at any price, to-day were taken at constantly advancing figures, and tho heavy slump in those shares was in a great measure made up. The liquidation in the Viflards is -now be lieved to have marked the culmination of the efforts to force a complete liquidation in the street, as those stocks have resisted the force applied for a much longer time than any other group of stocks on the list. The impres sion Is thatrnow the whole situation has been changed for the better, and the improvement in the condition of affairs will be followed by higher prices all along the line. There is to be expected considerable selling in the North ern Pacific securities and some others to liqui date loans, as was witnessed to-day,-but the market now shows no pressure of other stocks, and the offerings of the past few days have un doubtedly been taken by strong parties. The unfavorable factors to-day were the con tinued sales under the rule, both for the ac count of the suspended firm of Decker, Howell A Co., and for the accounts ot two other brokers whose suspension was announced during the day. They were, however, regarded as of slight importance, and created little disturb ance in the market. There were still rumors of further troubles in financial circles, and the North River Bank went into the hands of the examiner late in the day, though the fact was not made known until after the close of business. The foreigners were heavy buyers all day long, and the transactions for foreign account were (o Urge that the insplcioa that the late. sales for London were for the short account was openly expressed. The loaning rates for stocks have been very high and the Inquiry has been very urgent, which would go to give color to the suspiclou. Money was stllltightatthe Exchange, and a premium of was exacted for nse over the day, while it was believed fhat banks were loaning to their customers on satis factory collaterals at rates even lower than the legal figures. The buying throughout was of tho most confident character and reflected an easier feeling, both in money and as to the gen eral situation. The report that Mr. Gonld had acquired con trol of the Union Pacific again was used for all It was worth. The stock showed no response to the story, and to-day was only fairly active and moved over a comparatively narrow range. There were reports that the North American Company was in trouble, and while the officers announced that they bad tided over their engagements the stock was sold heavily, and, although taken freely, failed to advance with the remainder of the list, and was espe cially slugeish in comparison with the Northern Pacifies, The transactions in it. however, were on an enormous scale and affected but one fourth ot the total business done in all secur ities. The general list was very f everisb, wbich was to be expected under the circumstances: but there was an almost continuous advance in prices from the opening to the close. The early Lon don figures showed again a marked improve ment over ours of last night, and we folio wed with advances of from 1 to 3 per cent, and al though the selling was very heavy In the early trading the demand was such that the list failed to go much under the opening prices. The principal adverse influence at the time was the sales for the account or the suspended firms, but even this was successfully overcome toward 11 o'clock. The Northern Pacifies took the lead immedi ately In the upward movement, and before noon the entire list followed, placing prices on a materially higher level. The gains extended to everything traded in, and the fluctuations in a few of the specialties attracted consider able attention. Pullman dropped to 16S. the lowest price for along time, but recovered at the close to 185. Other movements were on a smaller scale, but sufficiently large to cause, a recovery ot most of the losses of yesterday. The market became much more settled in the alternoon, and comparative dullnes was seen at times in the list. They were not of long duration, however, and the buylnz movement took on increased force toward the end of the session, and the close was active and very strong at about tho highest priecs ot the day. The final advances are almost invariably for material amounts, the gain of fractions being the exception. Northern Pacific preferred is up 7 per cent, the common 2; Wheeling and Lake Erie preferred, 4; common, 1; St, Paul, 3: Burlington and Quincy, 3; Sugar Refiner ies and Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis, 3: Union Pacific 3; Atchison, 2; Rock Island. 2; Missouri Pacific 2; New York Central, 2: Western Union, 2, and the others smaller amounts. Railroad bonds were again active, and dis played a firm to strong tone in close sympathy with the dealings in stocks, and, while many issues show losses from last previous sales, they are those which have not been traded in for some days. The active issues are almost invariably higher to-night, and the close was marked by tbo same strong tone as that In stocks. The sales of all issues reached 2,143, 000; but of that amount Kansas and Texas firsts furnished 193,000; Richmond and West Point 5s. 141,000; Northern Pacific 5s, 130.000; Texas Pacific second incomes, 129,000. and .the Atchison incomes, 129,000. Hocking Valley 5i rose 2. to 79; Texas Pacific seconds. 2, to 34; Richmond and West Point trusts 5s, 3, to 63, and Iron Mountain 5s. 2, to 83. The Post says: There is one point that is worth keeping in mind, and that is that the sell ing of stocks here for London account up to Monday was largely for short account. One evidence of it was the large borrowing demand for stocks therefor delivery yesterday, which was the first of the three days of the fortnightly settlement. The following table shows the prices or active stocks on the .New York stock Exchanec yester day. The snpplyof bard wood, particularly oak, is not up to demand, but there has been no change in rates. Oak timbers are steadily growing into popularity for heavy structures, such as bridges, at the expense of hemlock and pine. There is also a scarcity of cherry. All building lumber is moving freely at old prices. Dealers have all they can do to meet demands of customers. Country roads are in such a con dition as to prevent getting supplies to river and railroads. Cold weather and snow are longed for in the lumber regions. pine unplaned tabd quotations.
