Kigi&W? - mr.'WJ ' tWjjlWflWftSpiSfrMiiHH P lkE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, "WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1890. 8 r r ' DE. CROSBY'S CHARGE. A Police Captain Alleged to Have Collected $70,000 Blackmail FK0J1 SEW YORK SALOON KEEPERS. Inspector Lymes Will Make the Divine Prove It in Court. THE rCOOF 1IDST BE FOETHCOIIIXG IfrECIAt, TELEGRAM TO TUB DISPATCH.1 2sirw York, November 4. Inspector Byrnes made this statement to-day: "I have read in this morning's papers the statement made by the Itev. Dr. Crosby, irhere he 6ays: 'I know of a police captain, for a Commissioner told me, who received J70.000 last year in blackmail Irom saloon keepers .n his precinct. 1 can prove this if it is doubted.' "That statement, publicly made by a well-known divine in this city, is a very seri ous accusation against a department that is charged with the enforcement of the law, and it has a tendency to cause distrust in and impairment of its efficiency. There have been statements made heretofore by irresponsible persons relative to members of this department receiving money trom per Eons engaged in illicit and disreputable business, and such persons, when called upon by the department for evreence. either could not or would not be found or declined to furnish the commissioners with proot of their assertions, so that the accused persons could be brought to trial, and, if found guilty, properly removed. ritOOF MUST BC rOKTII COMING. "In this case no such question can arise, for the gentleman making this statement is Yell known, and I assume will be ready to furnish proof of this statement when called upon to do so. I believe the officers of this department are anxious to have tbe accused peron, whoever he nuy be, tried, and, it lound guilty, promptly dismissed from the department and punished in such manner as the cise may warrant. I', on the other haad.tlie charge is untounded and cannot be proven, then it is a cruel and malicious libel on tbe department and the person from whom it emanated, no matter how high his standing in tbe community may be. should be brought before the bar of justice and puuhhea as he deserves. In speaking about this matter as I do, I am bonndto remembe. the fact that the Police Department is a de partment created for the purpose of prevent ing, detecting and punishing crime, and being such, it is but natural to expect trut the evil classes are at all times ready and villing to cast upon it all kindsof criticism. AX INVESTIGATION "WILL BE MADE. "When a person like the Eev. Dr. Crosby publicly makes the statement, which the press claims he made at a public meeting, it simply has a tendency to make those wrong-doers rejoice that another besides one of their own number is broadly casting criticism; upon a department which, in the judgment of these evil-doers, should be wiped out of existence. Owing to the numerous duties now devolving on the de partment in discharging the duties placed upon them by the laws in reference to elec tions. I ask the oublic tor a suspension of judgment until the matter can be thoroughly investigated by the Commissioners of Police, vhich, I am sure, will be done speedily." THHEATENING TO STBIKE. The six days' notice given by the Knights of Labor to General Manacer Lynch expires to-night, and since Vcrostic, the discharged committeeman, has not been reinstated, the men will refuse to go to work in the morning. A conlercnce was held to-night between General JIanjger Lynch and Master Work man Kerfoot, who lepresented the miners. Shortage in the Ohio Valley Company's Supply the Cause. fSPECIAI, TELEGRAM TO THE DiSFATCn.l East Liverpool, O., November 4. After this week natural gas will be shut ofl from the bisque kilns in the potteries who use the Ohio "Valley Company's gas. The cause for this is the shortage in the supply, which becomes more apparent as tbe cold weather approaches. It is thought that by shutting off the bisque kilns au ample sup ply will remain for the consumers on the lines. The order of the gas company will go into effect on tbe first of next week. The shutting off from the bisque kilns will result in considerable inconvenience to the potters, who have built their -kilns for natural gas. The necessary change for the use of coal can be made without any serious inconvenience, however, but more expense and trouble will be connected with the old style fuel than with the now failing gas. A WOMAN THE CAUSE. Terrible Tragedy In West Virginia Brought on ly Jealousy. HtrECIAX. TEX.KUKJLM TO THE DISP ATCIX.1 Parkersbtjbg, November 4. A tele phone dispatch from Grautsville says that Adam and Grant Richards, who were visit ing an uncle at Oxford, went to a corn-husking a few nights since, Adam taking his young and pretty wi.'e with him. During the evening tbe usual country games, in which kissing takes a prominent part, came off. Grant universally selected his cousin's pretty wife as his choice among the many misses, maids and matrons, and thereby ex cited Adam's jealousy. On their way home Adam cbided his cousin, and warned him to desist in future. In the morning at the breakfast table the subject came up again, but the men left the bouse apparently good friends. They had not left the yard, however, before Grant drew a knife and attacked biscousin, cntting him almost in pieces. He then walked into the house and told the woman that she was to blame for the murder, picked up his gun and made for the hills, but was overtaken and captured that night. Ad3m's heart was completely severed and two ribs cut away. Many threats of lynching the mur derer were made, but he was hustled off to the county seat and safely lodged in jail.
