' EVERY DAI SCIENCE. Prohibitory Laws Asainst Both White and Yellow Daisies. BEKZINE FOR TRACING PAPER. A Combination Pavement of Cobblestones and Cedar Slocks. ALUM FOR EXTIMGU1SH1NG FlEES n-BETARH) TOR THI DtgrXTCH.3 Both white and yellow daisies have been prohibited by law in two States New York and Wisconsin and in Canada, being placed on a par with the thistle as noxious and mischievous weeds. The New York statute says that both daisies and thistles shall be cut down twice a year along the lines ot all canals and railroads, and on lands bordering the public highways, in June and July and in August and Septem ber, and in certain cases they may be cut down by anyone at the expense of any cor poration on whose land they are found. In many of the fields in the vicinity of Hew York and throughout the States of New York and New Jersey the grass will olten be white or yellow, as the case may be with daisies, which means the serioui deprecia tion of any crop sought to be raised on such ground. They are not eaten by any kind of stock, and cattle aToid hay in which they are found, while they propagate themselves so rapidly tbat it is most difficult to eradi cate them. One of the highly recommended among insect powders, that known as buhach, is made from pyrethrum, which is only a name of one of the varieties of the daisy. Safety Indlcntor tor Elevators. The frequency of mishaps to elevators has drawn attention to the necessity of adopting reliable devices for insuring the safety of passengers. In addition to the many patents which have been taken ont with this object in view, a device has just been brought out whereby the condition of the automatic safety attachments to a passenger or freight elevator will be audibly mani fested at every reciprocal movement of the elevator car. The elevator is fitted with a system of levers and a spring for controlling them or releasing them when they are re quired to engage the teeth of the racks run ning at the side of the elevator shaft, and thus instantly stop the car. To prevent ac cident from an inoperative or defective spring, an alarm or signal bell is provided, and each time the supporting cable it slackened from any cansa the bell is sounded. Should the bell fail to ring on the car reaching the bottom of the shaft, the absence of the signal would be an indica tion of a defect calling for immediate at tention. Porcclnln Finish. The Painter' Gazette gives the most ap proved method of producing the "porcelain finish," which is the latest craze for finish ing dining rooms in Dure white. If it is new work the wood must have a coat of shellac to prevent pitch from coming through; if hard pine it should receive two coats. If over old paint it must be sand papered down to a perfectly smooth surface, and all imperfections filled with putty. Give the work four coats of French zinc mixed with raw oil, and econgh turpentine to make it dry with only an egg-shell clots. Give enough time between ejeh coat to dry perfectly hard, before applying another. When dry and hard sandpaper to a smooth surface with No. 0 paper, then it is ready for the finish, which consists of two coats ot French zinc ground in, and thinned with Demar varnish. There should be no oil in this finishing coat, as itwould tend to lessen the gloss and turn the paint yellow. Ken- FnTlns Experiments. Among the recent experiments in paving is the combination of cedar blocks and cob blestones. The single horsecar track in the center of the street is paved with, cobble stones; a width of about eight feet on either side is paved with cedar blocks, and the rest of the wav to the curb is paved with cobble stones. This gives a pavement which has some excellent points; its disadvantages are that the wood paving shows a tendency to wear in ruts, as the vehicles run so nearly in one track. Well-laid cedar block pav ing in Detroit lasts eight to ten years, and on some streets even 15 or 20 years. It is generally laid on sand, with sand brushed between the blocks. A pavement that is much more even, but which costs consider ably more, is made by laying the cedar blocks on concrete, with a cushion of sand between, and filling with coal tar between the blocks. Asphalt is now finding much favor in the replacing of cedar blocks on streets of heavy traffic. Wnter In Extlnenlshlne Fire. The theory of all fire extinguishers is to cut off the burning object from the sur rounding atmosphere. This can be done by either a liquid or a solid substance, but water is the simplest and most natural one. Its efficacy as a fire extinguisher may, how ever, be increased by an addition of pul verized alum in sufficient quantity to give a saturated solution. On evaporating, this solution will leave on tee material on which it has fallen a thin coating, having a high heat-resisting power. Potash and eommon salt shonld not be used, as the salts will volatilize and afterward precipitate them selves in various parts of a room or build ing, and tend to produce dampness from their affinitv Jor moisture. Kovel Stencil. A novel stencil is now employed for put ting on large lettering on railway cars. The open spaces are covered with brass wire net ting of abont one-eighth inch mesh. A short stiff brush is used, with which the workman beats the stencil instead of brush ing it, and so gets a good body of thick white lead upon the car. This lettering is. said to keep bright much longer than that pnt on with the ordinary stencil, which can not be thoroughly brushed in without dan ger of the paint creeping under the plate. Tracing; Paper. The following method of making paper transparent for copying drawings is adopted by the Austrian Hydrographic Bureau. The sheet of paper being placed over the drawing to be copied, it is slightly rubbed with a ball of cotton saturated with pure benzine. The tracing can then be readily made, owing to the transparency produced, and the benzine on evaporating leaves the paper opaque as before, and perfectly odor less. To secure satislactory results, how ever, absolutely pure benzine must be used. Ilnndllns Molten MetaL In a car wheel foundry in Detroit a very ingenious system for handling the molten metal from the cupolas to the flasks, and carrying the wheels to and from the soaking pits, has been introduced. The work is done by machinery entirely, a series of overhead trolleys, moved by a wire rope connection, carrying the ladles, flasks and wheels. The foundry has a capacity of 400 car wheels per day, and about 130 tons of metal can be handled in six hours by the new system. Tho Luminous Boot Experiments have been made at Havre -with a luminous buoy, invented by M. Dibos. The buoy emits the light which is produced by phosphide of calcium on reaching the water; and, as It is very pow erful, the water is illnmlnated for consid erable distance around. Spectators in the lighthouse at Havre saw the glare distinctly at a point two and a half miles away, and it is plainly risible for over fits miles.
