CHICAGO Wheat A fair speculative busi ness was transacted within a lower range of prices. Tbe ferling was nervousand unsettled. A great deal of long wheat was closed out around tl for December, and a good many stop los limits w ere reached. It was a continuation of yesterday's weakness The offerings were heavy and the demand only moderate, an effort to check declining prices being only partially successful. Tbe opening was weak and i.fia lower than yesterday's closing, but there was a rally of K fc soon after the opening, but acain took the down turn and prices declined lc, with De cember sufferine tho greater reduction. A quick rally of Jcfollowed. but quickly receded arain, the market at this point showing con siderable nervousness, and after fluctuating, closed aoout lc lower than yesterday. Corn was only moderately active, the trade being local. Tho feeling prevailing was weaker. First trades were at a slight decline, after which tbe market hardened some, but soon rnled weak, selling off Kc. cnanged some and closed with a lost of M)5c. Oats were traded in and fairly at an irregular ranee of prices. Trading was mainly in May, which fluctuated ?ic Tbe opening was steady, with fair bidding by shorts, and prices ad vanced ic Prices recededjc, rallied slightly, but again weakened an 1 receded a more, and the market finally closed at Ji decline from yesterday. Mess pork Trading was only of moderate volume. In January and May the decline was 5fj7Je, there being a slight recovery from ex tnine inside Azures. Lard was only moderately active. Prices ruled quite weak and the latest quotations were practically at bottom. The net loss for the day was a stron; 10c Short Ribs A fairly liberal business was done. Small Trades in Pennsylvania Oil, but Duck-eye' an Unknown Quantity. THE KEWS AND GOSSIP OP THE CITI A broker, iu discussing the local stock market yesterday, remarked: "A great many people who don't fully understand the business characteristics of Pittsburg, fall into tbe error of supposing that trading in stocks amounts to little or nothing. This is wide of tbe mark. They expect too much. Pittsburg is not a speculative center, and probably never will be. She offers too many opportunities for investment in other directions for speculation to flourish like it does in New York, Chicago and other cities, where it is the chief or only interest Sale; of 1,000 to 2,000 shares in a day, as has hap pened, and will no doubt happen again, is big work here, but nothing at the great speculative centers. "The point I want to make is that Pitts burg occupies an anomalous position in tbe speculative field. She is unlike any other city where this interest is pursued, and can not with fairness be brought into compari son with other markets. While making no noise and attracting little attention beyond tne circles of brokers and investors, the aggregate of sales on and off 'Change amounts to so respectable a figure as to rank as an im portant factor in the prosperity of the city. Those, therefore, who think that speculation In Pittsburg amounts to little or nothing should revise their opinion. "Indications of a freer movement than at present in local stocks are not wantinc. Large amounts of trust funds set free by tbe sur render of Government bonds are seeking in vestment. Largo additions to the volume of currency by Congressional enactment and tbe return of funds from the South and West are turning the attention of Investors to stocks and bonds, as a source of revenue. To all who are speculatively inclined, Pittsburg offers a line of securities of established merit; They repre sent many of the leading interests ot the city, have a permanent value, and are certain to yield large profits." Baalnets N'cwn nnd Uoislp. The work of laying out a new town at Par nassus is proceeding quietly and steadily. Engineers are establishing streets ana bound aries and attending to other preliminary mat ters. There have been several inquiries for manufacturing sites within a few days. Home seekers are taking quite a fancy to the Highland Park district, as shown by tbe active demand for building sites ont there. Its con. venience to the business center is strongly In its favor. Accidents to person and property are of daily occurrence, but their effects may be mitigated, wholly, or in part, by insuring with the Ameri can Casualty Insurance and Security Company, of Baltimore, whose advertisement appears In another column. This company insures em ployers against all liability on account of tbe personal Injury or death of employes, resulting from any and every accident, happening to them while in active service; or this insurance may be effected when the employer is not liable, and may also include his liability toward tbe public in case of accident. Another dis tinct feature is protection to steam users against all property losses cansed by accidents to, or by, boilers, engines, elevators, steam pipes, automatic sprinklers, or other specified machinery. Tho contract for completing the Neville Island bridge expires October 15, after which time a forfeit may be exacted. To avoid this the contractors are crowding the work as fast as possible, and there is little doubt that the connection with the main land will be made in side of 30 days. The Scranton Board of Trade Invites the co operation of similar bodies in Pennsylvania in organizing a state Board of Trade, the pre liminary meeting to be held in Scranton as soon as possible. It is understood that the Duquesne Traction Company will extend their line along Walnut street east from Aiken avenue, and that an effort will be made to have the street graded and paved before the rails are laid. This would save property-owners a great deal of trouble and annoyance. Mr, C. Beringer is home from a business trip to Kentucky and Tennessee. Trading was light and fluctuations as narrow as possible to be any at all. The opening, highest and clos ing price was SO. and the lowest 793. Clearings were 93,000 barrels. As usual. Buckeye was no where. Concerning the sale of the Exchange build ing a broker said: "I think the meeting October 4 will agree almost unaniraouily to let the property go. but I do not think it will be sold for a year at least. Property onf'onrth avenue is steadily advancing. Belav ;s, therefore, in our favor. We have an offer of 160.000, but I think we can do considerably better within a year. We ought to get at leaU $175,000. "I have been hoping that business would Im prove and the sale be avoided, butthe situation grows worse instead of better, and wo must make a cbanco of some kind. NEW YORK STOCKS. A Little Boom nt tbe Opening Profotslonnl Cbnrncter of tbe Market Retained Tbe Street Again Awaiting De relopmcntt Lotsea Few. New York, September 24. The stock mar ket to-day opened with quite a little boom in those stocks which have led the market of late, and in which the short interest is believed to be larger than usual. The demand of late hs come principally from the shorts, and. when l tbe demand slacked off to-day the activity vieaseu ana prices dragged. The market still regains its almost exclusively professional character, and when those operations cease dullness and stagnation take possession ot the market just as they did some time ago, before tbe eXxtrema stringency In money occurred. The streak Is aeain awaiting developments. The saraA stocks which have lately dominated the traaifcg in the stock market were all again promknent to-day, but the activity In them was on a Imnch smaller scale tban daring the past days ill tbis week, while a firm to strong tone riRST SECOND CALL. The rumor that tbe tariff bill would be called up In Congress to-day was tbe occasion of the stimulation of the trading in sugar refineries at higher prices, and tbst stock was again the most prominent feature in an otherwise barren market. It opened at 1 per cent higher at 80 and rose 2 per cent further, but reacted partially late in the day. tbouch it left off at a material gain over its last night's price. St, Panl was active, but fluctuated within narrow limits, while North American displayed more than usual strength, and with sugar is alone In ending at a material gain. Lackawanna was like St. Paul, firm within nar row limits, althonsh quite active aU day long. Among the specialties Mobile and Ohio was tbe strong feature, but the remainder were dull nd without movement of importance throughout the day. The opening was steady to firm, arid all the advance as a rule was made in the forenoon, while dullness and stagnation were the rule in tbe afternoon. The close was dull but firm, generally at small fractions better than the opening prices. The final chances are gen erally in the upward direction, and sugar rose JJS and North American the losses being t i nnmber and insignificant In extent. Railroad nonds were more animated, tho sales of all issues reacmng 8890,000, but out of that amount the Texas Pacific seconds fur nished S174,O0O. Tbe market was unusually steady, and the final changes are even of less importance than usual, but the few important ones were advances. Government bonds have been dull and heavy. State bonds have been fairly neglected. The J'ott says: "The understanding that the Tressury would be outof the market as a buyer of silver during the next week to October 1 probably had something to do with the lower prices for silver certificates to-dav, but possibly it is also getting into the minds of a good many people that it u ill be difficult to advance the price of silver by means of the Treasury pur chases of 4,500,000 ounces per month, and more difficult to maintain tbe price, if it is advanced by that means, because we are certainly ac cumulating a large stock of silver in this coun try. Exports, too, to a considerable extent keep up, but their volume has been diminished as compared with previous years. "Alit.le less than three weeks ago all the New York morning papers had sensational re ports regarding a reported rebellion of the stockholders of the Illinois Central against tbe management, and in that connection it was claimed that tbe Illinois Central was 'on the verge of bankruptcy. The annual report for tho year to June 30, now out, shows that the company bad earned its dividend of 6 per cent, and had a small surplus beside. Tbis kind of bankruptcy would ruin a bear on tbe stock market." The following table shows the prices or active stocks on the .New York Stock Exchange yester day. Plenty of Business Being; Transacted on the Levco Yesterday. Business was very lively on the levee yester day afternoon. No boats arrived until 5 o'clock. A quantity ot freight was pile'd on the wharf awaiting them. The first boat to arrive was from Parkersburg. She was loaded to her euards with freight, mostly live stock, and ar rived ten hours behind her schedule time. The Cincinnati packet did not arrive until after dark. Considerable time was spent in unload ing her on account ot the wharf boat not being in position. Several river men doubted the practicability of Captain L. N. Clarke's idea to run a stern wheel boat on Lake Michigan during tbe World's Fair, and gave as a reason that tbe waters were too choppy to run tbe boat with safety. Captain Clarke, states, how ever, that be is willing to risk it, at any rate, as it has been proven that sternwheel boats can rnn in other placea than rivers, and cited as an instance tbe successful operation of a stern wheel boat in tho harbor about New York. He is figuring upon a boat about 160 feet long and 60 wide, whicb is larger than any of tbe Pittsbunr towboats. The rivers bad a perceptible decline vester. day and almost dropped a foot during tbe 21 hours. At 6 P. if. the marks showed 3.10, fall ing, a fall of 8 inches. Driftwood. The Henry Brown, en route for New Orleans. passed Cairo yesterday. THE Sam Brown arrived at Cincinnati and re turned with a tow of empties yesterday. The Ulck Fulton and Fred Wilson arrived at Cincinnati last evening with Pittsburg coal. The Hudson, from Cincinnati, passed through the Davis Island dam last evening several hoars late. The Scotia, with Captain John 31. Phlllls in command, and Robert H. Kerr In the office, started for Pittsburg yesterday. AT a meeting of the Cincinnati and Memphis packet Directors Tuesday an option on the New South was given at (50,000. it is likely that the boat will be purchased. LABOR SAVING DEVICES. Building lumber continues in active demand, with prices unchanged. A leading dealer said yesterday that this year would show a larger volume 01 trade than any previous year. The amount already sold insures this. Said he: "Our .sales last year were 100,000,000 feet. In the first seven months ot this vear our sales reached 70.000,000 feet, with tbe lau part of the year to hear from." In hard woods cherry is tbe favorite and is very scarce and firm at 10 per thousand higher than a year ago. riNE tWPLANXD YARD QUOTATIONS. Clear boards, per M .-.. .... Select common boards, per M...
