One OllnUter Who Wnnls to Make all the Commotion In Church, rcritcui. tsxegkaii to tux msrATCH.y Si-EixcpiELn, O., July 7. Trouble has swooped down upon and taken a place in the high-toned aristocratic congregation of the Methodist Protestant Church, at Hechanicsburg, a -town of 2,000 popu lation a few miles north of here. The commotion has- been caused by the arbitrary action of the pastor, Ber. A. L. Reynolds, who thought bis congregation ought to consider nothing but religion while in hid thn,.v, n .:.i.i i - -..h.u. sus ui);u, jnoh week when the heat was almost unbearable Bev. Mn Reynolds was preaching to his congregation ab ut a very profound theme. The audience seemed in.ti.nt;. mi stant wave-like of the fans of the large au-. uicutc uuiurueu .ne pastor, lie struggled to get the members interested, and not suc ceeding as he wished, he finally broke out irritably: "The members of the congregation will, please ktop fanning. It is not at all neces sary. Thinkof icebergs, the north pole or polar bears and look at me." This irascible remark caused almost general indignation and mauy of those present got up and left the church. At previous meetings the minister had rououstruud against the lanning, doing so in a mild manner. His last break h.is caused lots ot wounds that will be a long time healing. The minister is firm about not allowing the use of fans and the way is very dark. MAEKETSJJY WIRE. Enensive Improvemants Proposed by the Pennsylvania Kailroad. KEWSTATION AHD FREIGHT HOUSE. Bpeculatjon Fails to Bespond to the f'xpec tations of Speculators. THE HEWS AKD GOSSIP OF THE CITI Information comes from a reliable source that the Pennsylvania Railroad is arrang ing for extensive improvements at Edge wood. The rapid growth, of the borough has made it necessary to erect a larger station house to accommodate the increased patron age of the road. The present building will, therefore, be removed and a larger one erected in its stead. It will be one of the handsomest on the road. Agent Shaner has been notified to move, which is an indi cation that operations will soon begin; In connection with the pagsenger depot, and probably under the same, roof, will be a warehouse for the accommodation of the busi ness part of the community. There will also be ticket, telegraph and express offices, and a side track to the warehouse. These improvements, when completed, will give Edgewood quite a clty-llke aspect, and be a stimulus to business, as well as an induce ment to buy land and build homes. The bor ough has water, gas, electric lights and a post office, and will soon haveaschoolhousejand now, that the railroad proposes to increase Its facilities for the handling of passengers and business, nothing is wanted, it wonld seem, to complete the felicity of the Inhabitants ex cept population, which will come in due time. m Railroads Under the Hammer. During the first six months of the present year the number of railroads sold under fore closure was greater than In the corresponding period for several years. The record shows that doting the time Indicated 21 completed roads, with 1,913 miles of line, and representing in their securities over 92,000,000, were sold under the hammer, bringing only a fraction of the original apparent Investment. For the first six months of 1889 there were eight sales, covering 1,525 miles, and 92,678,000 of capital and debt, and for the same period'of 1888 13 roads, with only 755 miles, and $31, 423,00a These foreclosures, as a general thing, were the culmination of financial difficulties extend ing through a series of years, and in some cases Were the ending of long periods of re ceivership. Some of the roads were weighed down by excessive capitalization, and others rnn through sparsely settled territory, where there was not enough business to pay expenses roads on paper. These forced sales by no means reflect the condition of the railroad in terests of the country. They were nevermore remunerative or less likely to come nnder the hammer. Builneas News and Goulp. Two enterprising young ladies on Fourth avenue, who have had considerable experience, are talking of starting in the real estate bust, ness for themselves. x-ittsburg has plenty of room to spread out in. There are at least 2,000 acres of unimproved land in the Edgewood district alone. Forty-three mortgages were on file for record yesterday. The largest was for 12,00a Sixteen were for purchase money. A property on lower Penn avenue has changed hands three times within six months, and each time at an advance. Investors are paying more attention to that thoroughfare than formerly. The recent deals In acreace on tbe Panhandle Railroad have excited quite an Interest in that locality. It la admirably situated for homes and manufacturing, and rapid transit will make it convenient of access. Andrew Caster received his commission for placing 550,000 Allegheny county 3 per cent five-year riot bonds at par. Boston and Chicago failed recently to place some of their loans at the same rate of Interest. I'The German Savings and Deposit Bank de clared a semi-annual dividend of 6 per cent, and the Cash Insurance Company one of 4 per cent. W. A. Herron t Sons report the demand for small lots fairly good. Fancy prices are seldom asked. It was reported yesterday that Samuel W. So many principals are leav ing tbe city that it is getting difficult to close up deals, especially large ones. Fancy prices are becoming the exception instead of the rnle. A 600-nnrrel Well Iteported In Cornopolis Which Peter Out A Good One at " Forest Grove Abont Completed. Some one raised an excitement yesterday by reporting that the hill well, on tbe Robert Ferret farm. Ooraopolls, had started off on a 25 barrel an hour gait. The report spread rap idly through tbe city, and seemed so well founded tbat even one of the owners of the ma jority interest took tbe first triln and went out to see. It was a great disappointment, so much so that even in the village some people at 7 o'clock last evening were still Inclined to think there micht be something: In it The drillers had not conducted the work, but they seemed to tninK mere were Better prospects lor 000 barrels a year than tbat amount a day. George Xashell got a telegram announcing the strike, and he enveloped himself in dust to reach the Pittsburg and' Lake Erie Railway station, caring apparently nothing for M9 In tbe shade. When he reached Coraopolis he paid no attention to the livery stable, but broke over the bills for the well. The reaotion was great, but at 8.30 last evening it was thought he would come around all right with carefnl nursing. While tbe first disgust at failure was set fresh some one brought news that the Stein well, on Neville island, was a big one, but the crowd was in no humor to hear it. Some In sisted tbat she was showing well, however. The Gillespie No. 4, on the Scbuler 'farm. Forest Grove, promises to be a big one. It is tbe nearest one to the big Young well, the first roarer in tbe field this summer. It has been flowing 75 barrels a day, with the drill tools at work. Tbe drill has not reached tbe spot where tbe oil is supposed to be, and some people think the Gillespie Do. 4 will be as large as the Young No. 1. Schnler paid 4,500 for tbis farm of 70 acres. He got 6.000 bonus on 80 acres of it and his royalty yields him the price of an acre or so a day. M LIMIT TO DULLNESS. Wall Street In a StuRnnnt Condition Lend ing; Stock Decline Bat Lltllo Bnsl nfss Transacted. New York, July 7. The apathy and stagna tion in Wall street which prevailed so long, were, if anything, to-day intensified by the limit of business and significant fluctuations. To-day's dealings were almost entirely bare of feature, and there seemed to be some interest in New England, St. Paul and Atchison. St. Paul was the only one in which there was any Important movement during the day. Consid erable pressure of short stock in tbe forenoon resulted in a decline of 1 per cent, based upon the late unfavorable reports of earnlngswith the expectation tbat the same will continue for a time and allow a short turn on the short side. Sugar Refineries also made a rather sharp de cline of 1 per cent, but recovered tbe loss later in the day. a New England was the leader of tbe market in the early trading and displayed some strength which, however, disappeared when tbe weakness of the general list lfim nnr. pronounced. The bears and the Chicago peo- Sle felt the market by pressure upon the rangers, and St. Paul and Rock Island wore specially weak throughout the dav. not rallying with the remainder of the list. New England was tho strong feature. Prices continued to harden until Just before the close when the weakness again appeared, but tho close was dnll and steady to firm at inslgnlticant changes from first prices as a rule. St. Paul is down 1J4 and Ruck Island 1 per cent, hut tbe other changes were slight. Railrbad bonds were very quiet and sympa thized with tbe weakness in stocks, but tbe dealings presented Httlo or no feature of inter est. Chicago, St. Paul and Minneapolis firsts sold at 122. r Government bonds hare been dnll and steady. Slate bonds bave been dnll and without fea ture.
