THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, SUNDAY, JUKE 22, 1890. 11'" Mt OLD NEWSPAPER. Light Shed Upon "War Times by a Copy of the Dispatch of '63. ffOMEFS WORK FOR THE SOLDIERS City Lota Offered at $200 That ire Sow "Worth That Much a Foot. HDJTS AT OLD HABITS AND CUSTOMS 'WK1ITJW rO THB DISMTCH.1 Old records are interesting. Old papers will oftentimes brine to mind whole chap ten of history that would otherwise be for gotten. A single copy of The Dispatch in 1863 calls freshly to memory the whole story of "the war." Ihe notices of the sol diers' aid societies bring bact the days when every girl and woman was knitting socks for the soldier or making shirts ior him, or collecting money to spend for his comfort in the field. 'Women seemed to lire only in thinking of those at the front. "With mourning in Yiew any day nobody thought much of fashions, and yet looking back over the old records the adrertisements are abont as usual. People died and got married and dressed and dinnered and carried on about the same as to-day, if we may judge by The Dis patch, that furnishes the picture of the times. Names differ, styles have changed, sew fashions have come up, but life goes on about as of old. In the copy just before us "hair jewelry" is ad rertised specially, but no one cares for hair jewelry now; "panel papers" are largely advertised, but panel papers went out long ago. T7HA.T LOTS SOLD TOE. Lots were advertised in the Eighth ward from 200 to $500 a piece a house and garden well stocked with grapes, strawber ries and other fruit, is advertised to rent at $150 year, at the corner of Sheffield and Bid- well street, but no such rent would pay for that corner now. Joseph Home advertises skirt braids, twilled tapes and shoe laces, and a fall line of notions, at less than east ern prices, at his store 77 and 79 Market street. "Who remembers him there? At that time Iawrenceville was a borough and East Liberty was likely out in the country. Ambrotypes were in style then, and Drake's Plantation Bitters and hooped skirts. Among the amusements we find "An Old folks concert" with Emily Page advertised to sing "When This Cruel War is Over." "Who was Emily Page? Was she the singer who figured in the fainting scene at Tete doux's concert a sketch of which was "Stan" Eeinhart's first bid for fame? Look ing back now her unpopularity was some thing amazing, and hardly to be accounted for.-By all of the women singers of the chorus she was held in derision for some reason or other, and not a spark ol sympathy was shown, as it was thought she was sham ming. Bein hart's sketch, showing Mr. Tetedoux, Mr. Jlellor and others as deeply concerned, was inimitable. In these days it wonld have gotten into the papers, but then it was only "passed around" among those interested. The reading" of the old paper recalls much that is interesting and has long been lost sight of. Mr. Weyman and Win. Lyon are recorded as taking over one hundred boxes of good things to the soldiers at Mur ireesboro, the gi:t ot the ladies of the Pitts burg Subsistence Committee. Nowadays the ladies would carry their own gifts, then the men had to do everything in the public line. The girls did the work behind the scenes, but the world would have been shocked if they had prayed, or spoken, or shown themselves capable of "bossing" anything under the gaze of mankind. MIGHT HATE SATED THE HALF. On one Dace of the old paper published in 1663 we read with interest a letter from Edward Jay Allen to Mrs. Thurston in re sponse to a generous contribution to the boys sent by the Sixth Ward Society, of wh'ich she was President. In this letter, after earnest thanks and a relation of how the supplies were appreciated by the sold iers, the Colonel says he feels assured the presence of women in the camp would de crease the ratio of deaths one-half. "These poor sick soldiers," he says, "bear up un der severe privations until endurance is tassed beyond limit and the prostration is so great that all powers of reaction seem gone. They need such tender nursing as only woman can give. I ask for furloughs to send them home to get it, and after eight or ten days they come perhaps but the men are dead." On the same page there is a gloomy letter from the bixty-brst Kegiment, which relates that things are in a very bad way, and that Captains Bryson and Crawford and Lieu tenants Haldem.in, Jones and Bippey have resigned and gone home, and that Lieuten ants Brown and McGlaughlin have gone home without leave. "Desertions," reads the letter, "are numerous and alarming. Every day there are many who desert; about 75 left our regimetit since last pay day." "We wonder If these are the boys who are everlastingly clamoring for back pay and pensions, and threatening every Congress man with political death who does not vote for a pension that will include deserters. BRIDGET MURPHY'S TEOUBLES. Another item on the same page is to the effect that Bridget Murphy was lonnd "not guilty of selling liquor without a license." As appears she was a married woman, and Judge Stowe charged that the law presumed she was acting under compulsion of her hus band, and must be acquitted, unless the contrary was shown. The jury found Mrs. Murphy "not guilty," but sentenced her to pay the costs. What queer justice it is for those found innocent to pav the costs all the same. Still they do it nowadays. Juries and verdicts seem not to have improved with added years. In the same paper the arrival of Mrs. Jane G. Swisshelm, editor of the St. Cloud Democrat, is announced. She was on her way to Washington, presumably to give Mr. Lincoln a piece of her mind as to the management ot Minnesota, and to argue against the pardon of the leaders of the terrible Indian massacre in that State. She was also anxious to secure women composi tors in Pittsburg to take out to St Cloud to "run" her paper. That all were not patriotic and devoted to the Union and Abraham Lincoln is shown by a quotation from the Harrisburg Patriot, which says "Lincoln is a despot and Stanton is a villain." Among other items that the eye takes in with a glance are concerts by Gottschalk and a lecture by Balph Waldo Emerson, while Matilda Heron was playing Camille. All ot these have passed iron the stage ot life. "Ve learn that the men of '63 dyed their hair ar.d whiskers, and the advertisement states that the work would be warranted at reduced prices. How they must have looked! An old paper is a mine ol histori cal wealth. BESSIE EEAMDLE, fllEETIJs. TTENTION. PLUMBERb-U. HENBY AUCTION CO., Je22-104 Auctioneers. CHOICE PROPERTIES. SuccEBBful InvEBtmEnte REAL ESTATE. Of all classes of investment, those in real estate should be the most carefully considered, and the rea son is plain. Based upon solid values, such investment is the surest and the safest that can be made. On the other hand, nothing depre ciates in value with such startling rapidity or is harder to dispose of at any price than real estate, which, at the time of its purchase, has for for its sole recommendation a "lovely situation" or a "perfect climate." Neither is it wise in this particular to follow the crowd, for by artful advertisements and ficti tious sales it is an easy thing to in augurate a "boom" that promises fortune to all, but almost invariably results in disaster. The experience of persons who have thus hastily and inconsiderate ly bought property for no better reasons than those enumerated and afterwards repented at leisure an experience so oft repeated all over the world in a greater or less de gree should teach men that only in the natural centers of population, where ample opportunities for em ployment are provided, can the peo ple at large safely afford to invest in real estate. The most correct standard, of judgment, therefore, as to the value of property is furnished by the truthful answer to the ques tion: "How large a population can be supported by the well established industries of the district in which the property is located ? " Applying this test to the proper ties offered for sale by the East Pittsburg Improvement Company in the Turtle Creek Valley, below Walls Station, and confining its ap plication to a district not exceeding the property of the company more than one mile in extent, the signifi cance of the answer is apparent At Walls Station the Pennsylvania Railroad Company is erecting re pair shops, round houses, etc., that will directly and indirectly give em ployment to about 1,000 men. At Wilmerding, the mammoth plant of the Westinghouse Airbrake Company is already in partial oper ation; when fully equipped it will employ 2,000 men, most of whom are skilled mechanics. At Brinton, the Standard Under ground Cable Company have con tracted for the erection of their new cable works and wire mill, which, when completed, will give employment to over 400 men. At Bessemer, the great steel rail mill and iron furnaces of Carnegie Bros. & Co. now employ fully 3,000 men. The total number of men em ployed in the district -above de scribed will reach 6,400, and esti mating that, on an average, five per sons are sustained by the labor of each adult err ployed in a manu facturing establishment, the popu lation that could easily be support ed by the industries named, not to mention many others, that will prob- ably locate in the Turtle Creek Valley in the near future, would reach the surprising sum of 32,000. The figures show conclusively the solid foundation upon wnicn is based the value of property in the Turtle Creek Valley.
