THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 1890. A RACE IN THE MUD. How John Kewell Managed to Land a Much-Wanted Oil Lease. ELECTKICITI OF GREAT AVAIL In Hnstlinj a Conple of Pittslnrjers to Beat a Fast Koadster. AN EXPRESS WAGON HELPS 'M OCT Probably as novel a race as ever occurred for an oil lease, occurred between this city and "Westview, yesterday afternoon. Those famous old oil scouts, Ben Tupper, Charley Newlon, or that prince of them all, Joe Cappeau, may unwind a yarn or two of the good old days of Bradford or Pithole and or the breakneck rides 'cross country, and hurrah for the first and condemn the last, but the electric cars, an express wagon, and a pair of stout lees can even play cases and win oat. It was going on toward 4 o'clock, and the afternoon sun was probably going through its matinee performanco of setting toward the Western horizon, although the curtain of clouds had not yet risen, when John Xewell received word that a certain coveted leaie in the new oil field, Westview, was in the market, providing it wasn't sold before his arrival. "We can go faster by taking the electric car," said Newell (calf him Newell because that was bis name), and the car was boarded, or rather crawlep" into, and that modern in dlinimn flochpil tnwurd Perrvsville. bent on the pre-historic and time-honored errand of working a farmer for his lease. The warm car, padded seats and easy mo tion seemed a revelation to the two used to roughing it, and some pleasing comparisons between the present and the rough old days of Cherry Grove were being drawn, when Johnnv drawled, "Oh, me! Oh, myl Look at that!" ALSO AFTER A LEASE. "That" was nothing but a plain man in a bu"cr, urging his horse up the steep bill back of Allegheny. He was clad in the usual oilskin and was in the normal condition of the averse oil man, in a great hurry, as flecks - of foam whirled back on face and coat to mix with mud fresh from the heavy roads." "He's alther me lease," said Xewell, falling into bis humorous brogue when get tinc the worst of it. "He's afther me lease and I'm afther getting leit" A chill silence settled over the car pair, ' broken only by the monotonous hated ring of the conductor's bell and the heavy breathing of the electric current as a few thousand more ohms were turned on, and the car volted forward and madly down the first grade. Then something happened, no one knows what, and the driver will never tell, as it is against the rule to talk to the electric engineer. Anyway, there was a bang and an upheaval, and the car glided Einoothlyou, leaving a plowing horse and a wrecked buggy on one side of the road, and a steady volume of choice oil-country En glish, from a man who had evidently devoted much of his time to accumulating expressive adjectives. The rival lessee "was floored, or rather grounded. No, hardly that for the determined man undid the traces in a moment, rut the lines, clambered on the horse's back and came on again. "Lukkat him gallop," said the conductor. "No," said an excited passenger, "he's went lame," which expressive phrase pos sessed the merit of truth, if not of grammar. The horse had gone lame badly, and so the first half of the race ended, with the car leading to its terminus at Pcrrysville, and the lease still two miles away. "Now," said Newell, "sprint," and they sprinted. He carried weight of some 80 pounds over his friend, but the latter soon aCCUmUlateu more loan ma euarc 01 mun, though the other didn't object, so honors were easy. . . "There's not a carriage in Perrysyn'e, but T wonder what that rattling Is behind?" "An exprees wagon." -Whose in it?" 'A man." Thedei'l!" "No, a m " THE LEASE LANDED. "Come on," and away the two went to Westview, with the steady plunk, plunk of the express horse behind, that wouldn't be urged, and thought he knew his business, and then was in no great hurry. So the procession reached Keating's and landed the lease, Newell winded but lead ing, his friend a plodding second, and the other lellow distanced so badly that the flag on the Ivory well broke loose and fell on him. "I'm dhry." Legally, this expression might be objected to as an attestation to a lease, but practically it seemed to meet the approval of the wit nesses present After a lunch and a cigar the return trip was snggested, and it did seem tough to walk back those dreary miles in the mud and rain. "Not a rig here," said jovial Joe Keating, who has struck it rich out there. "Nothing but this express wagon that has just come in. X think the man is after leases, and may stay nil night." "Well," chuckled John, "I never take anvthing I can't get. It says Tor Hire,' so we'll just hire it awhile." So it wis arranged that Keating pay the hire, il an owner appeared, and the dinners in the race clambered into the wagon and turned the now willing horse toward home. Arrived at the bottom of the long hill, just before the turn. John pointed back, and there in the fast darkening night could be seen a tall figure, clad in bespattered oil skin. "He looks as if he'd lost something." Yes, evidently something had happened to disturb his equanimity. He had not only lost the race, the lease and the rig, but also bis temper. The long, thin figure in the road ever and anon would point to high heaven, then pound himself vigorously on the chest, as is to enforce some mental re solve; thenhe would point to the ground, as an indication of some people's final destruction, and then pound his chest again all to no purpose; Bosinante scented oats. Confirmed. The favorable impression produced on the first appearance of ihe agreeable liquid fruit remedy tSyrup of Figs a few years ago has been more than confirmed by the pleasant experi ence of all who have used it, and the success of the proprietors and manufacturers the Cali fornia Fig Syrup Com pany.
