WIPING OUT OLD BLUE Of Sixty Offenses for Which the Death Pen alty Was Prescribed, but Five Now He- main-—Another Radieal Resolution Re. garding the War in Cuba, WASHINGTON, Fan. 6. ~The senate yes terday passed the house bill abolishing the death penalty in a large number of eases. The measure is in the line of re- cont state laws abolishing capital punish | ment, and applies the same principle to | change is | federal offenses, although the nat extended to a total abolition of the death penalty. The present laws, which have comedown from colonial times, have | a sanguinary aspect, and prescribe death for sixty offenses of varisus character The bill passed yesterday reduces these offenses to flve—treason, rape, murder and two offenses applicable to the army and navy.
