Edward Lane Symphony K miner Tachalkewaky Tcsterdny's pre(rrnm of the Philadel phia Orchestra intrhriitxail tuvi 1hlta. dclplilnns, one as composer nnd another us soieist. The nrst.was Otte Mueller, one of the first violins of the orchestra, nuuBe varmvni overture "Hclllaraf- nana" wan Jho opening number, It ecing the third of Mr. Mueller's com positions wHIch linn been performed by the organ Isntien under Mr. Btokewskl. Bcmarnuin" is the nnme of an Inter national association of artists In the various media, In which enrh member has a fraternal naine and which holds meetings at stated times for the purpose of promoting fellowship among them selves. The themes which Mr, Mueller has used iu thin overture, are some of the songs sung at these meeting. The composer has chosen Ills themes with care and 1ms taken these which could be rationally and logically de veloped. , Beth ln composition nnd In orchestration the overture, is a line piece of work. The thetnntle mntprfni Is skillfully developed, showing sufficient learning te demonstrate that Mr. Muel ler is a muster of the technical tt tt seurces of his art. but It Is in no wnv overloaded with these devices. The line ans been drawn at just the right point. In the orchestration, Mr. Mueller nan generally followed the classic model with the modern use of the instruments new te the orchestra since thnt day and has succeeded in producing sort- erlty at nil times, Without any sncrlflce ei clarity. The instruments are con tinually used ln their best registers and the overture may be regarded ns one of the llncft orchestral compositions yet produced by a Philadelphia composer. KdwardLanc, Vinner of the Htoicow Hteicow Htoicew Rkl Medal in 31)21, offered that year for pianists, gave a line rendition of the Liszt concerto in 11 flat. Mr. Lana was a hit nervous at the beginning, as might well be expected, but thlR wero off ns the concert' progressed and his debut with the orchestra was n very Huccexsful one. His technique is ample I even ter a juiszc concerto anu nm lone, whlle net very powerful, is excellent In quality. Mr. Lane received many recalls at the close of the concerto. The symphony was the Tschnlkewbky Fifth, in K miner, one of the 'great orchestral works ln which Mr. Stokew- skt Is tit bin best. Though rather long for the concluding number of n program, It was the only position in yesterday's program ln which It could logically be placed. MV. Stokewskil gave an unusually impassioned reading of the work, which, as Is the case with nil the Tschalkewsky symphonies (thnt Is the last three) was warmly received by the audience. SIX IN FAMILY ON STAGE Chippendale-Mathers 'Well Repre sented at Lyric An unusual occurrence in the theatre was the appearance at the Lyric The atre last Monday night in the Sothern and Murlowe production, "The Mer chant of Venice" of fix members of the Chippendale-Mather family. The Chippendales' share with the Kemble Coopers the distinction of being the eldest theatrical family of the English-sneaking stage.' The earliest-record of a member of the Chippendales in the theatre Is In the middle of the eighteenth century and the line is un broken down te the-present day, when I.enere Chippendale represents the name in the Set hern and Murlowe or ganization. One of the Chippendales wus n -prominent member of Macredy's company nud 1 lent Macredy a cloak in .which the actor disguised himself and made his escape from the mob at the time of the Aster Place riots ln New Yerk during the last century. The six members of, the Chippendale Mather family who were seen ln "The Merchant of Venice." were Lcnerc Chippendale, Sydney Mather, her hus band, and their four children, the Misses Je nnd Jane nnd Masters Richard and Sydney Chippendale, Jr. These young people are in school in Washington nnd Leng Island and are spnedlng their Kastcr heltdnys with their parents nnd Incidentally gutting their lirst taste of actual experience ln the theatre. TwoSteck Companies Opening Philadelphia will have stork again, and net one, but two companies pre senting it.
