Oi , f GOSSIP OF THE STREET The unfortunate psonftl difficulties of the exectitlro ami master mind of the United Drug nnd allied corporations came In for considerable discussion yes terday In market circles. How mrtny wore such sore spots nre to be cared for was an Interesting question rnlscd. Some who hnve been making n close Muuy of the market movement, asserted that the performance of several special ties clcArly Indicated more cripples were annltlng major operations, This houo cleaning, It was pointed out. was confined exclusively to Indus trial specialties, and largely In which iipfciilative combinations have foolishly endeavored to hofd the price of their favorites up In face of a general declin ing market. It Is not altogether a bad gjmptom nr sign, many declare, because tucli wreckage is usually n rcllnble in dication of the approaching end of a big bear campaign. The fact, that these disturbing developments were received with a relative degree, of complacency on the part of the general market, demonstrates not only that has the mar' ket become virtually shock prftof, but It alfo confirms the recent assertion of the completely liquidated state of the general market. Any of the several adverse develop ments of the last few days would alone have been sufficient, n few weeks ago, to ctart the market plunging downward. Yet each and nil of tbcm were treated with surprising Indifference. Canadian Investments A very Interesting booklet has just been issued by Dillon, Read & Co. muter the caption: "The Security of Canadian Investments." It points out that the firm has sold $202,076,500 of Canadian bonds In the, last ten years without a single default of principal or interest. The booklet contains a comprehensive resume of the resources of the Dominion ns well as statistics "covering the Increased population, for eign trade, value of form crops and finances of the Government. Switching to Ponds The switching of Investments from stocks to bonds has reached much larger proportions than generally ap preciated. The unpleasant dividend changes hove been largely responsible for this, which, nt the Bame time, was helped along, by cleverly arranged comparisons by several enterprising bond houses, not only showing the wis dom of such n switch' but also profit of the turn. During a walk on the Uoardwalk at Atlantic City Inst evening, n retired broker who was formerly quite active In this city, stated he had advised such a move to nil friends some time ago. "I have suggested," ho said, "that such switches be made exclusively In the first -mortgage bonds" of the leading railroad bjstcms. In my opinion, this will prove a wlso move, for there Is some danger of underlying Issues being adversely affected if the railroads go into whole new financing, which It Is believed is unavoidable because of the famihfd condition of nearly nil the EVENING PpKkIC IiEDGteKr-PHILAbELPHIA, FRIDAY, JULY1 29, 1921 v carriers. Many of these bonds are n6w selling on on income basis affording even a larger return 'i than received in the present dividends'- paid. Many of them, no-matter ,what Is said, are far from being stable. The railroads are not by any mean out of the woods. It Is going to ptlt the managers to a severe test nnd in the next twelve months we Mill learn who arc and who nre not real railroad men." No Profiteering by Utilities Henry I. Dohcrty & Co., in the currnt Investment Hiillrjln. snys: "Throughout the war and now, utility service has been the cheapest commodity necessary to life. The Illi nois Committee on Public Utility In formation bases this statement upon Government tax figures, and Its bulletin contninH the following: "Government figures indicate that the public utilities arc nbout the onlv business whose operating sheets did not record payment of excess profit taxes during the war. No charge of profiteer ing can ever lie against them. 'Utility rates did not advance comparatively wil'u other commodity prices during the period when farmers, laborers, retailers, manufacturers nnd property owners' profits were soaring sky high' myn a Government expert In explaining the situation. 'That being true, they have but little room for reduction of rates, even If the cost of coal, labor and mate rials used by them got back to pre-war prices. Utilities earnings were an chored to earth by regulation. They were not permitted to earn profits of 100 per cent and over In the war years, us many other businesses did. The utilities were granted Increases only when nbsolute necessity required, and then were .permitted to earn only ft to 8 per cent on their actual Investments; Utilities through the war period, and now, are the cheapest, commodities necessary to life on the market -today.' " Real Easy Money The decline In call money yesterday to Wfi per cent on the stock exchange was looked on as a bullish factor of the highest importance nnd the gen eral assumption was that easier money conditions which nre expected now to be lasting will soon begin to exert an influence on prices nnd business. In one quarter It was asserted that the member banks In the Federal Re serve Bank In this dlctrlct have con tracted their accommodation to about the extreme limit and that there Is little probability of any further sub stantial returns of Federal Reserve notes being made. This Is believed to 'mean that Insti tutions will soon have an excessive supply of Idle money on their hands which will seek investment In the bond market, nnd thoso taking this view be lieve that buying orders In large vol ume must be expected In all clashes of bonds.
