Blnltlng npcll th! morning ns n result of en forced celllnc becnuso of unwilllngncKsi or inability to meet the marginnl cnlls ncnt out Inst night. Tho .initial ilc elines nt the same time quickly run into n big strntn of "stop-loM" onlcrs. As result of the heavy pressure prices crumbled with unottHng rapidity all nlong the line, with the weakest spot found in the sugar, oil and steel stocks. The downward swing, however, reached stocks of practically every description, with many making new low prices for the year. The downward swing spent Its force before the end of the first hour. During the remainder of short period desultory covering of shorts brought Irregular recoveries, but aside from these operations the buying power re mained feeble. There wns also con hideroble weakness in the grain and cotton markets, while foreign exchange was very unsteady. It was antother week of dlscourogc ment for both the Investor nnd the speculator. As n result of the combi nation of unfavorable developments largely pertaiuing to the industrial situation, there wns n further alarming crumbling of teeurity values. This ad ditional depreciation was made the more (lls-conccrting because of the nlready disturbing shrinkage of market valuci during the last twenty months. Prior to the short-lived spring rise tho belief was entertained by some of the very shrewdest market analysts the market was not only thoroughly liquidated but also that the unfavorable side of the industrial situation known and likely to happen was fully discounted. Un doubtedly they were sincere In their deductions and nt the time were essen tially correct in their verdict. Mke nil tisue-destroylng diseases, unforeseen complications unexpectedly developed, which completely upset thler prognostications. In brief, the industrial companies have not been able to liqui date their inventories against which their additional linancing last fall ana again this spring wus founded. As a result the majority of these concerns find themsehes little better off than they were before. They find they have no profits to pay dividends while bank ers are clamoring for the repayment of promises loans. This logically has led to a great unsettlement of mind nnd has been prolific of a whole lot of ir responsible talk of sore spots to be eliminated. It also has resulted in 11 virtual deluge of dividend omissions and dividend reductions. A further under mining lntluencc developed in the semi collupsa of the foreign exchnnge markets and in tho first linrt of the week in the pronounced tightening of the money market. t...ia tl.ncn .lepiimstnnecs nosfliblv it was not surprising lower level of , ..;..., clinnlil linve been established. When it is considered the average prices of he active industrial issues and the railroads as well are within only n few points of the exceptionally depressed levels of last December nnd April? re spectively, there seems to be every pos sibility of the downward swing being overdone. Ikcausu of the recurrent enforced liquidation, tho bear partv have encountered prnctically little op position in their raiding tactics, tin boldeued bv their biiccess, some of the attacks were little short of reckless. While thev may bo nble to pound the market with still greater fury, unless mauv well-known signs nre misleading nnd false, the market ns a whole is fast approaching an oversold condition. In other words, the bear ranks is rapidly becoming overcrowded nnd experience has shown when the following on cither side of the mnrkct becomes con spicuously popular it is always wise to do a little sidestepping. A definite reason for the sagging tendency exhibited by the loeul market this week uus eally to be found in nny uf the surrounding unsettling in fluences. Considering nil these dis turbing elements the major portion of the local stock held their ground sur priMngb well, which in turn Is ex plained in the i ompletc absence of ex tended speculative commitments. Taxes, piussing or reduction of dividends and business depression has proportionately been felt by the local investing public Neither have unv of the home corpora tions escaped. It is when thee factors are given uiieful thought the pro longed inaction of the market is better understood. After all. despite the prevailing gloom nnd pessimism, and despite the ever increasing dLscmirngcmenth commer cially and financially there Is no ical reason for apprehension. To the con trary, it is a time when every one should strive to keep a cool head and avoid os much as possible within human responsibility making unnecessary sac rifices. Values may be lowered, but cannot be destroyed. There has been almost on uninterrupted marking down nf prices for nenrly two years. Every road has a turning and the corner In so far as the security markets are con cerned may bo nearer than gcnernlly supposed. That material progress is being made In the correction of over acts during tho war period Is striking nnd convincingly confirmed in the sub stantial improvement in the country's bnnking position and concrete testimony uf tho strengthening of the economic situation. 500 200 200 too 300 100 100 100 1H00 2930 200 000 200 8109 300 800 100 1200 100 2100 100 1001 COO Total Great Northern pf.... 604 Gt Nor Ore ctfs va Gulf Mobllo & Nor pf. 214 Houston Oil 2 Hupp Motor Car II H Illinois Central 88 Inspiration Con Cop.. 334 Inter Con Corp 3Ii Inter Con Corp pf . . . 104 Int Agrlcul Corp pf... 30 Int Harvestor new... 8S Int Harvester new pf. 1024 Int Mer Marine pf.... fi0'2 Internat Motortruck.. 31 Int Motortruck lBt pf.
