It wns nlmost exclusively n rnll ninrkrt in today's stock exchange, as tho IruliiRtrlnls nnd Bpccinltics which for ho long hnve hold the foremost position were absolutely a secondary consideration. The revival in tho rails came in for more notice by reason of the fact of the systematic character of the movement. It has been many moons alnco such n perfectly or ganized campaign has been launched In the market. There were no hitrhr! in tho program, and while the upMddlng process lacked the sensationalism at tending some of the pool demonstrations in industrial specialties the last few years, quotations of almost tho entire group were kept up nnd pushed up al most continuously. The movement, it is true, was strik ingly mechanical, but unless surface signs nrc deceiving no stoues wero left unturned to spread the rail propaganda and incite enthusiasm in this division. It apparently did not altogether have the support of the professional clement, as efforts were made at different in tervals to check the upward swing by renewed attacks upon the supposed weaker spots of the industrial list. These reactions were short lived and were without effect ou the rails in which quarter most gains were fully main tained and some cases extended. From the very outset the rails were the only shares to reflect a consistent tone, everywhere else the price move ment was uncertain. The demand for the railroad stocks broadened with the progress of tho session, indicating the unanimity of efforts on the part of managers engineering the movement, which apparently had the full indorse ment of the banking interests and so called powcrs-that-be. Gains of one to three points were made before noon by St. Paul common and preferred, St. Louis and San Francisco preferred, St. Louis nnd Southwestern preferred, Wheeling and Lake Erie preferred, Chi cago and Alton preferred, B. and O. common and preferred. Western Mary land and Seaboard Air Line. In the meantime the standard investment shares broke into new high ground, In cluding Union Pacific, lteadlug. Southern Pacific, Canadian Pacific and Norfolk and Western. The character of the trading suggest ed effort was being made to create the Impression that most of the stock around current levels bad been gathered in by strong people and the floating supply consequently was materially i educed. The indifference to the high money rates, as call money renewed ut 8 per cent as it did yesterday, stood out in strong contrast with the uneasy feeling manifested in some of the previous ses sions. There was further moderate call ing of loans in anticipation of the Sep tember 1 disturbsements, but the call rate was not advanced above S per cent. Around midday the bears launched a fresh drive against the motor, oil and shipping bharcs, which sustained losses of 1 to 3 points, but on the other hand pressure against the chemical shares and other specialties relaxed. Alto gether it looked as if the rail demon stration had the greater part of the professional contingent up iu the air, anil they were rather groping in the durk to get out of a bad mess iuto which they had worked themselves. GRAIN MARKET ChlcaRO, Aug. 31. There was n de cided change iu sentiment in the wheat market today nnd tln tone was steady to firm after the lirst half hour of busi ness. At the outset some pressure de veloped and declines were established, but u demand came in at the lower levels and rallies followed. Intimations of an export inquiry and firm cash markets brought about scat tered covering of shorts and buying by commNsion houses. There wns also a demand from chipping interests. Cash wheat held steudy and receipts were moderate. The export demand was again re ported as small. It wns added, in the discussions, that France and eUlgium were hhowing more iuterest nnd might start purchusitig ut almost un,y time. Hears pressed corn for t-alp in the early M'sMon because of good receipts, further weakness in the cash market and a belief, in soup quarters, that the period of general detlntion has actually set in. However, there was a good demand from commission houses on the break and. when resistance to the downward trend developed, the shorts become frightened nnd covered hurriedly, bring ing about a ruther sharp recovery. Cash corn was -Mi to .'I cents lower, but this was offset by predictions of frost iu tho Dukotus. lliiHiiiess was small In oats and prices moved in sympathy with those of the other grains during the entire session. Keeeipts wero liberal and the shipping demand was slow, but there was no selling pressure in evidence, and prices just drifted along. He -sellers are apparently supplying eastern needs tor the time being and there Is no demand from that quarter.
