The uncertainties of the convention week easily accounted for the conspicuous waiting character of today's stock market. There was hardly enough business done to rIvc it any special character. Most of the transactions comprised the familiar scalping operations of the professional trading clement. The bulk of business. In fact, was supplied by that element of the professional who ore nlways content to squeeze out a small profit on either side of the trading. Little significance, under the circum stances, was to be attached to the price variation, which lu general was ex tremely slight. What speculative in terest was manifested centered nlmost exclusively to scattering specialties. At the ouMet the general market exhibited rather positive reactionary tendency. The recessions, however, were not fol lowed up by any great amount of sell ing: neither was any great desire ex pressed Ho extend ventures on the buying side. As a result the greater part of tho list drifted idly within circum scribed limits. As nnturally would be expected the political situation was the one absorb ing lopic of discussion In market cir cles, and as all advices from Chicago pointed to a deadlock there was logi cally an Increasing dipoitlon to defer further speculative commitments until the situation became more clarified. Ac cording to Wall street advices, there seemed to be little chance of any of three leading candidates of a week ago receiving the nomination, which nat urally made the selection of tho standard-bearer a more difficult guess. Fur ther unsatisfactory credit conditions as set forth by the Federal Reserve Hank statements, and the possibility of the Supreme Court handing down important decisions today prior to the adjourn ment, nlso acted as deterrent factors and kept the market in n narrow rut. More attention, however, was paid to the many reports nnd rumors frof Chi cago. Tho 10 per cent stock dividends declared on Pan-American and Mexican petroleums were not especially helpful to those shares. Such action evidently having been discounted. Shippings be came central features before uoon. Mer cantile Marine pfd. ndvanclng .'t points nnd United Fruit UVi. American Ship and Commerce moving up sharply fol lowing tho announcement published on Saturday of the entrance of the Harri man interests, with the election of V. A. liarriman as president. I but Nova Scotia Steel jumped (! points I on list dealings, rood issue- were ir- regular. American Sugar declined !t ' points. LOCAL TRADING CONTINUED LIGHT Recurrent Liquidation of U. G. I. and Pennsylvania j Railroad Shares Recurrent liquidation in United Gas Improvement and Pennsylvania Rail road supplied about the only noteworthy development of the day's operations in the local market. The hollini: in both , issues was unusually heavy, but the i offerings were better absorbed than had been the case In any of tho previous liquidating movements. U. G. I. was pegged nt 42 and Pennsylvania Rail road appeared to find u solid bottom at 30 y4. Little feature attended the dealings in the nblance of the list and the trading continued on an extremely small scale, with most of the dealings of a purely perfunctory type. 'With the extreme dullness the markpt was again found to be thin on both the selling and buying side. This was indicated in rather wide chnnges mod" on small transactions. Electric- Storage Battery surrendered SI in the early trading in a decline to 117V.'. but before noon the price had rallied to 11 fin, Very small transitions in Philadel phia Co. cumulative preferred raised that issue Sl.fiO from the previous salo to 32. American Stores, on small deal ings, advanced to 4.", only later to shade to 44. Philadelphia Rapid Transit had much better support, and after re acting to 18Vj. rallied to 10. Union Traction, on tho other hand, yielded , to 304. Philadelphia Electric was steadier and fractionaly higher nt 22.
