The professional trader had virtually the field nil to" themselves In today's stock mnrkot. There was a pronounced curtailment In the volume of dealings accompanied by n distinct narrowing of the fluctuations. As n matter of fact, the market as sumed a pre-lioliday appearance, which was accentuated by the general indispo sition to take on new lines over tuo double holiday. On the other hand, further covering of short commitments impaired .a degree of strength to tho market besides bringing a further re covery in most nil parts of the list. In the meantime, there was n ijradiinl diminishing of the business so that be fore midday tho greater part of the li&t hod worked into a complete deadlock. Nothing especially insplriug or in vigorating wa to be found in tho oves night developments or the day's news. There wab, however, n strong inclina tion to view matters generally in n more hopeful light, nnd the tone of the ad vices of moot of the commission houses was decidedly more cheerful, yet none were encouruging any matcrinl exten sion of murket commitments. To the contrary, caution, continued the pass word pretty well along the whole line. Tho continued apparently bountiful supply of call funds ut 0 per cent, nnd the fact that loans carried over until Tuesday, together with the reports that further gold imports nre'impeuding, were among the encouraging factors. Another helpful iufluencc was supplied in the more favorable crop prospects. On all sides, bowover, it was recognized that tho apparent easier money conditions were more superficial than real, nnd in the event of nny broadening of market activity money would quickly stiffen up again. An unusual variety of stocks partici pated in the further rise of the morning. Steels, equipments and oils continued to lead the way, with shippings, motors, utilities, coppers and food specialties. Extreme gains of 2 to 4 points were made by Mexican Petroleum. American Car. Haskell & Marker, Stromberg, United Fruit and People's Ons. Union Pacific, Great Northern and New York Central were foremost among the stronger rails, the chenper transporta tions also improving. Prices eased irregularly before noon, when trading became dull. Liberty bonds showed no mntcrinl change, but rates on Loudon reacted slightly. Established 1902 Much of the Uneasiness Mani fested in Preceding Sessions Rapidly Disappearing tone of the trading and in prices was made in today's local market. The trad ing was fairly active, much more so. in fact, than would have been reasonably expected in view of the forthcoming holiday and other restricting influences. The most encouraging development from a sentimental viewpoint was the ab sence of liquidating pressure, so con spicuous in the preceding visions. Uneasiness created by the rather sen sational character of the recent develop ments in the local transit situation and the apprehension cnnierninc the ciodit inflntinn seems to bo gradually disap pearing. Calmer deliberation "f either of these subjects has made them ap pear much les menacing. As n matter of fact, for the lirst time in weeks, bank officials spoke encouragingly of the 1 money situation. A slight but quite distinct improvement was said to be noted. In the first plnce. the belief was ex pressed that the apex ,of high money rates had been reached'. In the sec ond place, n more generous policy was said to be c xtcniled in connection with renew uls. especially where the col lateral wus of A-l order. Then again, it wus said, that most of (he loaning Institutions were getting into a position wherein wider accommoda tions could be granted to regular cus tomers. In brief, it was the first ray of light through the dark stormy clouds which have bei'ti overhanging the finan cial horizon seen in months.
