Pronounced nerv ousness was displayed all throughout the morning, which tmqucstionubb wa Intensified by the auitc collapse of the foreign exchange markets. There wus to be found in many parts of the libt convincing evidence of enforird liquidation, which undoubtedly was pre eipitnteI b. the nubility to strengthen impaired marginal accounts It was reported during the morning that the banks had provided funds to meet Wall street's credit requirements. Eidcutlj this did not itjiplj to specu lative operations, in which, us stated, considerable involuntary liquidation was observed Much of this came from houses with western wire connections. There was also considerable pool liqui dation in the higher-priced industrial speculative specialties, reflecting the difficulties being experienced bv these interests in obtaining their financial accommodations, outside of what was indicated by the high rates for money in the last two days. With the downward plunge of prices there was marked expansion in the vol ume of the dealings whicli indicated the widespread character of the liquidating movement Transactions to noon ap proached 800.000 shares, almost double the recent turnover for a full day. There was little discrimination in the selling movement, although the weakest spots were found in the in dustrial division, vet the investment rails and other stable dividend puving issues also felt the force of the move ment as well as did all classes of bonds. Before noon losses of 1 to over 10 points had been recorded from last night's closing quotations. About the onlj support encountered was desultory cov ering of shorts. Signs ut the outset pointed to a con tinuation of the recent unscttlcment. While opening was unsettled, the mar ket seemed to show a little more re sistance, and before the end of the first fifteen minutes n rallying disposition was in evidence and n fair recovery was made all along the line. These rallies, however, were canceled before 11 o'clock, when foreign exchanges dropped to lowir records and heavier selling re sulted The utter collapse of the foreign ex change market was partlv due to the unconfirmed reports that England would stop imports of cotton. This, at the same time, provoked 11 violent selling movem-nt in the cotton market The collupsc of the latter market precipitated n fresh outburst of liquidation in stocks in older to protect the impaired holding" of cotton. Losses ranged from 3 to 17 points, General Motors, Cruci ble Steel, high priced, i!N and Canadian Paeihc featuring the reaction. The report of calling of funds bv the government and n further advance in the call rate to 20 per cent leopened the flood gates of liquidation in the earlj part of the afternoon. This, while not official and probablv true only with respect to individual cases, caused visions of a backing up in our exporth of commodities in general, which suggested a break in prices on this side of the Atlantic. The further demoralization in the foreign txchanges, the violent move ment downward carrying bight drafts on London to below ?3.20, served to in crease confusion at a time when monej rates were held at 14 and IS per ctnt tn .nil lunna nnil H npp wnr for time accommodations with bids for the latter' reported as high as 10 per cent. It was not surprising, therefore, that there should be an accumulation of selling orders ut the opening of the stock exchange which brought initial declines of 1 to 3 points.
